document.write(' Kevin Garnett got 120 of 123 first-place votes to beat two-time winner Tim Duncan for the honor Monday, three days after his Minnesota Timberwolves won a playoff series for the first time. Garnett’s teammates attended a packed news conference at the Timberwolves’ arena, and he praised them repeatedly. “I wouldn’t be nothing without those knuckleheads, believe me,” Garnett said. “It’s a team game, and I’ve always kept that perspective.” He has played at an MVP level for years, but this was a breakthrough season for the Wolves. They earned the top seeding in the Western Conference playoffs with a franchise-best 58-24 record, then ended a string of seven straight first-round exits from the postseason by beating the Denver Nuggets.

Everyone was convinced that this high school phenom, the 5th overall pick in the '95 NBA draft, was not going to survive life in the NBA. Fueled by sheer determination and loads of confidence, Garnett surpassed the odds that set him up to fail. A solid rookie season, which resulted in an All-rookie second team selection, was more than enough to prove that he was ready for the league. A strong second season in which he averaged 38.9mpg 17.0ppg 8.0rpg 2.12bpg, shooting 50% from the floor, put to rest any doubts of Garnett's brilliance. Two years later, after 4 successful seasons at Wake Forest, Tim Duncan stormed into the NBA. As the 1st overall pick in the '97 NBA draft, Duncan wasted no time in establishing himself as a legit star in the league. He averaged 39.1mpg 21.1ppg 11.9rpg 2.51bpg, and shot 54% from the floor, in his rookie season. Resulting in an All-NBA first team selection, and making him the first rookie since Larry Bird in 1980 to be honoured with the selection.

As McGrady seems poised to enter superstar status, its time to re-evaluate some pre-conceived notions about the efficacy of going straight from high school to the NBA. The accepted way of thinking had Bryant and Garnett as “special cases”, as “one of a kind” exceptional talents, whose success didn’t disprove the adage that any high schooler is better off playing in college. Considering McGrady’s development, Rashard Lewis’ mature play in last year’s playoffs and signs that Jermaine O’Neal is poised for a break out season, I’m not so sure. In fact, only Leon Smith has been a total bust among the high schoolers drafted in the first round, since the dawning of the Garnett era, in the 1995 draft. Today’s world definitely belongs to the young and talented. High tech wizards become instant millionaires. Folks in their early 20s become CEOs of dot.com enterprises. Who says a guy under the drinking age, can’t be an impact player in the NBA?

By Greg Sandoval
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 4, 2004; Page D08 Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett, the NBA's best rebounder and second-best scorer who also set 11 single-season franchise records this year, walked away with the most valuable player award yesterday. Garnett's victory in the balloting was almost as lopsided as one of his games, as he received 120 of 123 first-place votes and a total of 1,219 points from the Pro Basketball Writers' Association. San Antonio's Tim Duncan, last year's MVP, came in a distant second with 716 points and Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal finished third. In his ninth season since jumping to the NBA from high school, Garnett has helped the Timberwolves advance to the second round of the playoffs after a seven-year stretch of first-round losses. "A lot of people have asked me if I have a place for this award," said Garnett, who was speaking at a news conference, according to the Associated Press. "Not to disrespect the award, but my goals are a lot bigger than individual awards. When I get that big gold [NBA championship] trophy, that's going to solidify my whole journey."

Kevin Garnett: Passion Play
The young Timberwolves star has been obsessed with basketball since he was a boy. He sparked controversy when he turned down a $103 million offer and made headlines nationwide when he garnered $125 million. Then and now, he hated being the center of attention. But the Timberwolves and the National Basketball Association are banking on the kid from Mauldin, S.C. I n his hometown of Mauldin, just outside of Greenville, S.C., Kevin Maurice Garnett is remembered as the gangly kid with the ball, who pushed the curfew at Springfield Park, shooting baskets until midnight or later alone in the dark. He had to play, friends say. And basketball was in his blood. Kevin's father, too, loved the game and was an outstanding player. But Kevin grew up with a stepfather who did not encourage him to play basketball; he didn't allow a hoop in the driveway. And his mom wanted him to study more and go to college. When Kevin tried out for the Mauldin Mavericks, he didn't tell his mother. She learned he was on the high school team only after basketball season had started. By his junior year in high school, tickets to Mauldin Mavericks' games sold out, and people stood in hallways outside the gym just to

Kevin Garnett wins first NBA MVP award
May 3, 2004 MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota's Kevin Garnett won his first Most Valuable Player award Monday, beating out Tim Duncan of San Antonio and Jermaine O'Neal of Indiana, the NBA announced. ADVERTISEMENT Garnett, 27, got 1,219 points, including 120 of 123 possible first-place votes, in balloting by the Pro Basketball Writer's Association. Duncan, who won the award the past two years, got 716 votes while O'Neal was third with 523. Garnett led Minnesota to a 58-24 record and the top seed in the West while averaging 24.2 points and led the league with 13.9 rebounds. He also joined Larry Bird as the only players to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for five consecutive years. Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said Monday Garnett has wanted to win the award since the team drafted him out of high school in 1995. "When he came in the league nine years ago the No. 1 thing he said to myself and (team vice president) Kevin McHale is he wanted to be the best player in the league," Saunders said. For someone interested in a career in media and entertainment, it will be like one-stop shopping for me," said Alexandra Robinson, a junior at Lovett High School in Atlanta. "It was a great experience to bring these young people together with true business role models and to share a little of what I have learned during my journey as a professional athlete and an entrepreneur," Garnett said.
