Julius Erving
NBA Hall of Fame Basketball Star
Known simply as Dr. J, Julius Erving is clearly one of the greatest basketball players of all-time. His ability to suspend himself in mid-air and finish plays with fabulous finger tip rolls and devastating dunks excited fans throughout the country. During Dr. J's first five years in the ABA, he led the New Jersey Nets to two titles. His 11 seasons with the 76ers included an All-Star appearance each year, over 30,000 points scored, and another World Championship. More importantly, Dr. J was recognized as basketball's greatest ambassador, as he played the game with class, dignity and style. Since retiring from basketball in 1987, Julius has kept extremely active. He has served as President of the Erving Group, as an executive of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Philadelphia, coach of the Special Olympics basketball program and a spokesman for the Philadelphia Police Athletic League. In 1986, Julius returned to his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts, to finish his undergraduate degree. Currently, Julius is Vice President of the Orlando Magic, and has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

NBA Career statistics Although he was only 6-foot-6, Erving starred as a center at the University of Massachusetts, averaging 27 points and 19 rebounds a game in his junior year. He then left school to sign a four-year, $500,000 contract with the American Basketball Association's Virginia Squires. Known as "Dr. J" or simply "the Doctor" because of the way he could operate on defenses, Erving was cat-quick and had incredible leaping ability. He could soar through the air from the foul line to the basket, finishing the play with a slam dunk, and he could out-jump taller opponents to grab rebounds. He was an instant star as a professional, averaging 27.2 points and 15.7 rebounds as a rookie in 1971-72. After the season, he signed a contract with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, but a court ordered him to play for the Squires. Erving led the league with 31.9 points in his second year, when he had 22 rebounds per game. The financially-troubled Squires then traded him to the New York Nets. In three years with the Nets, Erving led the league in scoring twice, in 1974 and 1976, was most valuable player both years, and shared the MVP award with George McGinnis in 1975. The Nets won the ABA championship in 1974 and 1976 and Erving was also the most valuable player in the playoffs both times. The ABA was absorbed by the NBA in 1976, when Erving joined the Philadelphia 76ers. He remained with them until retiring after the 1986-87 season.

    Julius Erving
Basketball Legend Inducted into the Academy in 1988 "I saw that basketball could be my way out and I worked hard to make sure it was." The boy who became "Dr. J" began life in a public housing project, but his talent, hard work and determination were to take him a long way. One of the most exciting and talented players in the history of professional basketball, Julius Erving literally changed how the game is played. He is one of only three players in history to score a career total of over 30,000 points in professional play. In the 1970s, Julius Erving did more than anyone to build the fledgling American Basketball Association (ABA) into a worthy rival of the NBA. He was voted most valuable player in the ABA for three consecutive seasons. When he moved to the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA, he continued to surprise and delight the fans with his dazzling moves. and all Lovers of the game, Philadelphia fans in particular, thrilled to see Dr. J leap from behind the foul line, traveling 15 feet through the air to dunk the ball, throwing off the opposition with multiple mid-air feints along the way. His unique and imaginative style of play has forever changed our notions of what is possible on a basketball court. In a sense, today's basketball superstars are all the children of Dr. J.

    Basketball Legend INTERVIEW
    June 26, 1992
    Las Vegas, Nevada
You're a great basketball player, but I have the feeling as I read about you that it's always been important for you to be a good person, to be a well rounded person, as well. I think so. I think I started learning lessons about being a good person long before I ever knew what basketball was. And that starts in the home, it starts with the parental influence.
I came from a broken home, so my mom was a major influence in my life. video audio And I remember hearing her say hundreds, thousands of times, "You don't have to work that hard to try to be a good person, just do it." Before "just do it" was fashionable. I think she would add to that, even if there are a lot of things in life that you can't do, this is something that you can. This is a do-able thing. All it requires is programming your attitude properly and relating to people, as you would want to have them relate to you. Tell me about your mother. She was, I understand, from a very large family. My mom is one of 14 children. She's a great lady. She's a Taurus. Has been a profound influence in my life, still is to this day. Born in meager surroundings in rural South Carolina. She and my dad migrated to New York, where I was born, my brother was born, my sister was born. She continues to live in New York. We live in Philadelphia.

    Basketball Legend BIOGRAPHY b. February 22, 1950
Julius Erving was born in Hempstead, Long Island. His father left the family when Julius was only three. His mother worked as a domestic to support her three children. The family lived in a public housing project, and life was difficult, but Mrs. Erving worked to instill a sense of self-worth in her children, and young Julius realized his gift for basketball could be a ticket to a better life. By age ten, Julius was averaging eleven points a game with his Salvation Army team. When Julius Erving was 13, his mother remarried, and the family moved to the nearby town of Roosevelt. There, Julius maintained a high academic average and played on the high school team, all-county and all-Long Island teams competing in state-wide tournaments. Erving acquired the nickname "the Doctor" while still at Roosevelt High. His teammates would later alter this to "Dr. J." The basketball coach at Roosevelt High, Ray Wilson, introduced young Julius to Coach Jack Leaman of the University of Massachusetts. After high school, Erving entered the university, where Ray Wilson was hired as assistant coach the following year. At Massachusetts, Erving broke freshman records for scoring and rebounding, leading his team through an undefeated season. The next year, he had the second best rebound tally in the country. Over the summer, he joined an NCAA all-star team touring Western Europe and the Soviet Union. He was voted most valuable player on this tour.

Feb. 22, 1950, Roosevelt, N.Y., U.S.), American collegiate and professional basketball player who was one of the most colourful and exciting figures in the game during the 1970s and '80s. While playing in high school Erving won an athletic scholarship to the University of Massachusetts. In three seasons there he became one of only seven players ever to average more than 20 points and 20 rebounds per game in a collegiate career. He was still generally unknown, however, when he joined the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1971. He was traded to the New York Nets two years later. In his five seasons in the ABA, Erving led the league in scoring three times, was the league's Most Valuable Player in its last three years, and led the Nets to championships in 1974 and 1976. When the ABA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Nets traded Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers. Erving led the 76ers to the NBA finals four times in seven years, including their 1983 championship win. He was voted the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1981. In 1980 he was one of 11 players named to the NBA's 35th-anniversary All-Time Team. He retired in 1987 after having become the third professional player to have scored a career total of 30,000 points. At 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m), Erving played forward and was noted for his fast breaks, balletic leaps toward the basket, and climactic slam dunks.
