DREW SHARP: Age restrictions face tougher go in basketball
April 21, 2004 BY DREW SHARP FREE PRESS COLUMNIST The NBA honored its finest rookie Tuesday. LeBron James saved a flagging franchise, exceeded unprecedented hype and exhibited a professionalism lost on many veterans 10 years his senior. Not too bad an opening act for a 19-year-old. But if NBA commissioner David Stern has his way, such exploits by teenagers will be consigned to history along with the two-handed set shot and canvas Chuck Taylors. And a federal appeals court might have provided Stern with the ammunition to restrict the NBA draft to players at least 20 years old. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked Maurice Clarett from the NFL draft because he wasn't three years removed from high school, as league rules require. The court issued a temporary stay, overruling a lower court's decision that struck down eligibility requirements for the draft. As a result of Monday's reversal, Clarett and Southern Cal sophomore receiver Mike Williams are in limbo. They are the only viable prospects of the nine players who declared for the draft and didn't meet the NFL's eligibility requirements.

Brown, Dumars want Rasheed to return
May 20, 2004 BY PERRY A. FARRELL
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Larry Brown would love to have Rasheed Wallace back next season. He'll become a free agent July 1. Joe Dumars, the team's president of basketball operations, also would love to have the 6-foot-11 forward-center back if he could get Wallace to sign a deal that would keep him and Mehmet Okur on board. Asked what advice the coach would give Wallace about deciding his future, Brown said: "I would tell him to do whatever makes him and his family happy. "I would love to have him back here. I don't even get into that with him. He knows I want him to do what's best for him and his family. The fact that he's here this year has been a great thing for me all us Carolina guys. If he asked me for advice, I'd tell him 'Do what's best for you and your family.' I'd love for him to be here, but either way, he'll make a decision for the right reason as most players do. "I believe if we did all the right things by him through his experience here, then we'll have a shot. If we haven't, then he might not be here."

They play their home games at the Palace at Auburn Hills. The Pistons reached the NBA Finals in 1955 and 1956 but failed to win the championship. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the Pistons were one of the top squads in the league, reaching the NBA Finals from 1988 to 1990 and winning championship titles in 1989 and 1990. Guard Isiah Thomas led the team, which was nicknamed the Bad Boys for the bruising style of play of such stars as center Bill Laimbeer, guard Joe Dumars, and forwards Rick Mahorn and Dennis Rodman. Click here to find Detroit Pistons tickets The Pistons were founded by Fred Zollner in 1940 as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. A year later the club joined the National Basketball League (NBL), which was composed primarily of teams launched by corporations in the Midwest. Led by guard Bobby McDermott, the Pistons were a dominant force in the league, reaching the NBL championship series in their first year before falling to the Oshkosh All-Stars. Two years later, in 1943, the club lost to the Sheboygan Redskins by one point in the deciding game of the NBL Finals. The Pistons won their first NBL championship in 1944 and added a second in 1945.

The story that began with Drew Sharp’s infamous article suggesting Rick Carlisle’s job was on the line and which we hope will end with the naming of Larry Brown as the Pistons new coach on Monday, had many winners and losers. The following is DetroitSportsRag.com’s “winners and losers” from this bizarre saga: DETROIT SPORTS PERSONALITY/ENTITY RATING Detroit Pistons President Joe Dumars
Dumars gets credit for making the tough and unpopular call in the best interest of his basketball team. If the next coach of the Pistons is Hall of Famer Larry Brown, Dumars has pulled off a coup. Rick Carlisle, Unemployed Basketball Coach
The rest of the media can tell you how Carlisle will land on his two feet, but he had the perfect situation in Detroit and blew it out of stubbornness and poor people skills. The current speculation is Carlisle landing in Portland. Cue the “Odd Couple” theme now. Drew Sharp, Detroit Free Press Columnist

Tried to give your site a try. But I must stop. I have nothing less inside of me to PUKE UP!!!
Lets see, you bash Yzerman, (who speaks the truth and is one of the most beloved athletes in Detroit history), bash Carlisle (who can and will have his choice of jobsunlike you)! and PRAISE Federov (Juan Gonzales on skates)? That vindicates my feeling that you have no friggin' clue about anything you attempt to "write."
Hey, you know as little about hockey as you do about basketball!
Saying the Wings would not have won any titles without Federov is one of the most colossally IDIOTIC statements of all time!
Must be tough to type with those hands that are sore from constantly patting yourself on the back for "breaking the Carlisle firing." Give ME a 'break'! If someone had come up to you a couple days before Carlisle got the ax and wagered you that he was going to get fired, you wouldn't have put a penny on it! Ya phony!
Yet in your constant barrage of criticism, you don't once hold the Pistonsor their backstabbing owneraccountable for the bush-league way they handled the situation!

Staff Writer Published in the Courier News on May 21, 2004 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. The last time the Nets were in a win-or-go-home situation, it was Game 6 of the NBA Finals last year. And it's believed that was the point where Byron Scott lost Jason Kidd's confidence and faith as a coach. But before New Jersey faced its do-or-die situation against the Pistons in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Thursday night, Kidd gave a vote of confidence for interim coach Lawrence Frank that wasn't going to be questioned. "He has done a hell of a job, so I would expect him to be back," Kidd said. Frank went 25-15 after Scott's dismissal in January. Before the playoffs, a source close to incoming owner Bruce Ratner said Frank would return no matter how the team fared. "I haven't considered my future one bit," Frank said. "Our only focus is on this game and this game only." KRSTIC HURT AGAIN: Nenad Krstic, the Nets' No. 1 pick in the 2002 draft who is expected to contribute next season, suffered a broken bone in his left hand while trying to dunk Sunday and will wear a cast for approximately four weeks.

Sporting News, The
May 19, 2003 by Sean Deveney
If we really had been paying attention to Detroit back then, we might have seen this coming. On June 6, 2000, the day six-time All-Star Joe Dumars took over as president of basketball operations for a Pistons organization he had served for 15 years, he made clear what had gone wrong with the team. This was the franchise he had helped lead to two championships and NBA dominance a decade earlier, only to watch it slowly slide into mediocrity and insignificance for most of the '90s. The trouble with the Pistons, according to Joe, was that the organization had lost its flair for the unconventional, the derring-do that led it to draft Dennis Rodman and trade for Mark Aguirre and James Edwards. "We got very safe, very complacent," he said upon accepting the job. "Too many obvious picks, too many obvious trades. No risk, no reward." Nearly three years later, the Team That Joe Built is battling Philadelphia in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. With 5:45 to go in the third quarter of Game 2, Detroit has squandered a 12-point lead and trails, 57-56. Cliff Robinson (acquired in a trade for Jud Buechler and John Wallace in 2001) taps a rebound to rookie Tayshaun Prince (23rd pick in the 2002 draft), who swings the ball to Richard Hamilton (swapped for All-Star Jerry Stackhouse last summer), who then finds Chucky Atkins (acquired with Ben Wallace for Grant Hill in 2000) in the corner. Atkins, filling in for the injured Chauncey Billups (free-agent pickup in 2002), nails a 3-pointer that gives the Pistons the lead in a game they eventually win in overtime.

04/25/2002 - Updated 11:02 PM ET Dumars keeps Pistons cranked By David DuPree, USA TODAY By John T. Greilick, The Detroit News Joe Dumars is the link between Detroit's current success and its past glory. From the court Joe Dumars is calling the shots for the Detroit Pistons now instead of taking them. Now, as the team's president of basketball operations, he is the quiet man behind Detroit's resurgence. Last season the Pistons were 32-50. This season they turned it around to 50-32, won the Central Division title for the first time in 12 years and have a legitimate shot at getting back to the NBA Finals. They lead their first-round series against the Raptors 2-0 going into Saturday's Game 3 at Toronto. The Pistons are no longer the Bad Boys but a team with its own personality.
