runs deep Jackson: DeBusschere was one of a kind Second opinion on Doc Rivers ... See Below. Memories of Dave DeBusschere came rushing back to Phil Jackson the day before he looked up at the Garden rafters and took in the new memorial banner honoring his former Knicks teammate. "Many a time when we were in this city, I would go out with Dave and his friends," said Jackson in the Palace of Auburn Hills after the Lakers lost to the Pistons on Tuesday. DeBusschere, who died in May, always played tour guide when the Knicks would play in Detroit, his hometown, and made sure to include Jackson, five years his junior on his trips around town.

Knicks take this loss hard For Reed, too tough for words By MITCH LAWRENCE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Red Holzman talks to Dave DeBusschere (l.) and the rest of his troops in 1973. The death of Knicks legend Dave DeBusschere yesterday sent shock waves through the NBA community, starting with the players who teamed with him to give New York some of its greatest sports memories. Willis Reed, who recently saw DeBusschere at a charity event on Staten Island and had remained close to his former frontcourt mate over the last 30-plus years, was too broken up to do interviews. "I am deeply saddened by the news of Dave's passing," Reed, the captain of the two Knicks championship teams of the early '70s, said in a statement. "He had a profound impact on the landscape of professional basketball, both as a player and an executive. Dave was a great teammate, as well as a great friend." Added Walt Frazier, another legend from those Knicks championship days, "He was the difference in turning a team that was mediocre around. He was the final piece of the puzzle. Dave was a blue-collar type of player who led by example with his tenacity on the court." Former teammate Phil Jackson, who had an emergency angioplasty last Saturday to unclog an artery in his heart, was shaken by the news.

From ESPN NBA Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere , who won two championships with the New York Knicks before becoming the youngest coach in league history, died of a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 62. DeBusschere's exploits in the world of sports also included a stint as commissioner of the ABA and parts of two seasons as a major league pitcher with the Chicago White Sox in 1962-63. But it was in basketball that DeBusschere excelled. He gave up baseball after two seasons and a 3-4 record in 36 games to concentrate on his NBA career. Whenever people talk about the Championship Knicks of '70 and '73, they talk about Willis Reed's Knicks, or Clyde's Knicks, or Bradley's Knicks. But ask any of them , and they'll tell you whose team it really was. Renowned sportswriter Stan Isaacs said

You'll recognize the names: basketball All-American Dave DeBusschere, the local kid who put the University of Detroit's hoops program on the map to stay, and former Detroit Councilman Jack Kelley, whose passion for public service was exceeded in his heyday only by his ability to drink just about anybody under the table. Each in his own way was a class act.

"A loyal friend, an unselfish teammate and a quality human being. His strength, dedication and modesty lay at the core of our great Knick teams. He was like a brother to me."
Bill Bradley
One of the few to make it to the major leagues in two sports, DeBusschere is seen here as a Detroit Piston in 1967 (left), and as a Chicago White Sox player in 1964. (Photo: AP)
(AP) Dave DeBusschere's death shocked his old friends and teammates because he always seemed so indestructible, a rugged rebounder and the defensive conscience of two New York Knicks championship teams.
DeBusschere died of a heart attack Wednesday at NYU Downtown Hospital after collapsing on a Manhattan street. He was 62. He was a distinctive personality who went from the court to the front office to the Hall of Fame, youngest coach in league history, commissioner of the rival ABA and the general manager who picked Patrick Ewing for the Knicks in the NBA's first draft lottery.
