Wilt Chamberlain leaves $650,000 for KU scholarships, athletics
LAWRENCE The legacy of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain will continue at the University of Kansas through a $650,000 gift from his estate, Kansas University Endowment Association President Dale Seuferling announced today. The gift to KU Endowment from Chamberlain, who died in 1999, established four endowed funds in his name for scholarships, KU men's and women's athletics, and a Special Olympics clinic. "An exceptional athlete and KU alumnus, Wilt Chamberlain astounded basketball fans at KU and across the country," Seuferling said. "We are proud to accept this gift honoring his name and generosity." Of the gift, $100,000 established the Wilt Chamberlain Opportunity Scholarship Fund. The need-based scholarship will be awarded primarily to first-generation students with social or economic backgrounds that present challenges to the attainment of a college education. For athletics, $300,000 created the Wilt Chamberlain Men's Basketball Scholarship. Interest earned on the fund will support a scholarship for one KU men's basketball student-athlete. An additional $150,000 established the Wilt Chamberlain KU Basketball Clinic for Special Olympics Fund to support an existing annual basketball clinic for Special Olympians conducted by the KU athletics department. Chamberlain's gift also includes $100,000 for the Wilt Chamberlain Women's Basketball/Volleyball Scholarship Fund. The scholarship, one of the largest endowed for women's athletics at KU, will be awarded in alternate years to a basketball or volleyball player for her senior year.

    WILT CHAMBERLAIN
© Port Whitman Times 1999 Before he was a national phenomenon, which he was even before he was a college star, Wilt Chamberlain was a local, a high school, a schoolyard wonder, who was called "Wilt The Stilt" (a name he hated), because of his height and then thinness, of course. Not that there were'nt tall, even 7' or 8' tall persons before, but here was one who was more than tall, not JUST a giant. Here was a giant that was coordinated like a panther, with the strength of an atlas. He could high-jump, he could put the shot. He could dribble pass and shoot a basketball. Not only could this kid jump up and slam the ball down through the hoop, making the net flounce back in the process, but he could BLOCK the shots of the opposing team by just standing under the basket and waiting for them to get it anywhere near. Something had to be done about this of course; it just wouldn't do, it would be contrary to all aspects of the game to have someone who could simply jump up and keep the ball from going in. There is no goalie in basketball, never was, never would be. So the "downward flight" rule and the "cylinder" rule, the "three-second" rule and the like had to be invented to preclude goal-tending, to let the game continue unhindered by human physical development. But the stuff-shot was so in-your-face, so watchable, so stunning in its effect, that it just HAD to stand, and of course it did. Thus basketball was changed forever. KING OF THE COURT
    December 17, 1999
Spencer Michels remembers basketball star Wilt Chamberlain, who died yesterday in Los Angeles. SPENCER MICHELS: He was called "the big dipper" in part for his signature move, maneuvering over and around his defender, then gently laying the ball into the basket. He was also basketball's first celebrated dunker, slamming the ball with force over his opponents. At 7'1" and 275 pounds though some people said he weighed more Wilt Chamberlain was an unstoppable giant. By some accounts, he was the most dominant basketball player ever. WALT FRAZIER: I think he's the only superman, for sure, to ever play in the NBA, a guy that could go out and do what he wanted to do.
called Chamberlain the greatest offensive player he'd ever seen, and said "the fierceness of the competition bonded us as friends for eternity." Chamberlain had mixed feelings about his own career, in which his teams won just two NBA championships. He said he was disappointed that some people viewed him as a loser. And on his size, he said "Nobody roots for Goliath." A highlight of his career was the 100-point game he had in 1962. In his last interview, recorded in April, Chamberlain spoke of that magical game against the New York Knicks. WILT CHAMBERLAIN: The magic only started to happen when I got into the 70s, and when I got in the stands, which was around 4,000-some-odd people, which were a lot of people back in those days in that arena. They just started chanting "We want 100."

Support Us An All-Star To Remeber - Wilt Chamberlain by Danielle Sullivan The death of basketball great, Wilt Chamberlin , on October 12, 1999 devestated the hearts of many. He died in his Los Angeles home and was found on Tuesday morrning. Chamberlin's sister reported that after his recent dental surgery,he had lost a lot of weight , as musch asa 50 pounds. The night before his death, Chamberlin was home watching a movie with his sister and her husband when he didn't feel well and headed for bed early. Chamberlin was arguabley one of the best players in the game. Achiving the honor of making the top 50 players list was just one of the many honors we have to remember Wilt Chamberlin by. He was also the only man in Professional basketball history to score 100 points in one game. I am just a little too young to actually have seen him play a game live, but I have seen tapes and clips of when he was playing back in his days. To me he was one of the best players back then becuase of his height (7' 1") and his ability to dunk with such ease. In all he was a Basketball great who will be in the record books and in our hearts forever.

NEWS Wilt Chamberlain, 1936 - 1999 Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most dominant players in the history of basketball and the only player to score 100 points in an NBA game, died Tuesday at 63. Known as "Wilt the Stilt" and "The Big Dipper," the 7-foot-1 Chamberlain dominated the NBA from 1959 through 1973, when he played for the Philadelphia (later the San Francisco) Warriors, the 76ers and the Lakers. He scored 31,419 points during his career, averaging 30.1 points for his career. In January 1998, Chamberlain returned to the University of Kansas, where his abbreviated college career ended in 1958. His jersey was raised to the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse, where Chamberlain starred for the Jayhawks. At the ceremony, Chamberlain said: "I've learned in life that you have to take the bitter with the sweet, and how sweet this is."
    JOE POSNANSKI:
As it should be, Wilt's home is where his jersey is
Wilt Chamberlain did not know how much they loved him. See, he left Kansas a long, long time ago, in a different world, a different time, when the floor at Allen Fieldhouse was dirt, when black children and white attended different schools, before shot clocks, when Elvis had just begun rocking.
