Wilt Chamberlain This date marks the birth of Wilt Chamberlain in 1936. He was an African-American basketball player who won seven consecutive NBA scoring titles and is the NBA's third all-time leading scorer.
He was born Wilton Norman Chamberlain in Philadelphia. Chamberlain had four sisters Barbara, Margaret, Selina and Yvonne, and two brothers Wilbert and Oliver. Heralded (at the time) as the best prep player in the nation, Chamberlain led his Overbrook High School team to a 58-3 record and two city championships. Scoring 52 points in his 1956 college debut for the University of Kansas, Chamberlain led the Jayhawks to a 24-3 record and the national finals. Though known for his surpassing height, it was Chamberlain's all-around athletic skills that made him a premier performer. In 1962, as a professional, Chamberlain averaged 50.4 points a game, a year later he scored 100 points in a single game against the New York Knickerbockers.
Chamberlain played for the NBA's Philadelphia Warriors, the Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He won the league's Most Valuable Player award four times, and was an All-Star every year of his career except 1970. In addition to his prolific scoring, Chamberlain is also the leading rebounder in NBA history averaging 22.9 a game. He led the league in that category for 11 seasons, and set the single game mark with 55. Chamberlain won championships with the 76ers in 1967 and the Lakers in 1972.

Wilt Chamberlain Dies at 63
October 12th, 1999 The Los Angeles Lakers have confirmed that professional basketball and avid beach volleyball player, Wilt Chamberlain died in his Bel Air, California home today. According to his agent, Sy Goldberg, Wilt had suffered from congestive heart failure for years. Associated press reported that Wilt Chamberlain had lost 30 to 40 pounds over the last few weeks because doctors drained his legs of blood that had accumulated as a direct result of his weakened heart. Wilt Chamberlain, called "the greatest player in the game," played professional basketball for the NBA beginning in 1959 and is all over the record books, to include being the only player to score over 4000 points in a single season. After retiring from the NBA in 1973, Wilt maintained his excellent health and fitness by playing beach volleyball near the Santa Monica Pier with the locals. In fact, already in his 50's, Wilt was said to be a professional-quality beach volleyball player. Wilt Chamberlain was 63 years old.

Basketball legend Chamberlain dies

Chamberlain's 1962 100-point one-game haul is still a record
Basketball great Wilt Chamberlain has died at the age of 63. The NBA legend was a dominant figure in the sport during the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1962 he scored more than 100 points in a game, a single player record which still stands. This decade he caused controversy with boasts of his sexual exploits, claiming to have had sex with 20,000 women. The giant centre, who was seven feet one inch tall, was known as "Wilt the Stilt" and "The Big Dipper". He was found dead at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, and is believed to have suffered a heart attack. Chamberlain's 14-year career featured a series of record-breaking exploits:
  • He is the NBA's second-highest scorer with 31,419 points
  • One of only two men named MVP and rookie of the year in the same season (1959)
  • He led the NBA in scoring seven straight seasons, 1960 to 1966
  • Chamblerlain was also MVP for three seasons between 1966 and 1968
  • His 100-point record was scored in the Philadelphia Warriors' 169-147 defeat of the New York Knicks in 1962
  • Member of the LA Lakers' championship team in 1971-72, which set an NBA record of 33 straight wins that still stands.

classic words from wilt this book was awesome. it gives you wilt's point of view of all the controversial events from his life. It tells about his childhood, rapid rise through hs and college, the globetrotters, and the pros. A Good Story! This book proved to be a good story about the life of Wilt Chamberlain. Every phase of his life is covered. Some very interesting points about Wilt himself were brought to life by this book. His days at Kansas were worth telling. I also enjoyed reading about his playing time with the Harlem Globetrotters. His years as a professional basketball player prove to be very entertaining also. If you enjoyed the man Wilt Chamberlain, you will love this book. This is a good history of one of the dominant sports figures in professional basketball. This will prove to be a very good read. 'Wilt the Stilt:' 23,000 points, 100 in a single NBA game Wilt Chamberlain was a giant of a man and a giant among giants. At 7'1", he towered over foes from high school in Philadelphia, in college at the University of Kansas, and in the National Basketball Association. He played for three NBA teams from 1959 through 1973. An incredible all-round athlete, not just a basketball player, Wilt was probably the first big man in history to be able to break 50 seconds in the 440 and win a Big Eight high jump title. He was lean, muscular, and graceful. Among Chamberlain's achievements on the court: the NBA's only 100 point game. He did it on March 2, 1962, while playing for Philadelphia against the Knicks. No wonder that Chamberlain, who died in October 1999, is still considered a great player, perhaps the best of all time. Wilt was so successful that some say the league actually made the 3-second rule just to harass him.

Wilt Chamberlain
By: Sarah M.
Wilt Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1936. He was one of 11 children, the only one with extremely unusual height. He had two devoted parents, Olivia and William Chamberlain. His father worked as a welder in a shipyard, then a janitor and a handyman. As for his mother, she worked full time cleaning family's homes. Wilt worked as a young child doing different jobs for neighbors, so he could help his parents pay bills. His parents taught their children right from wrong and they never went without.
As a child, had various health problems. When he was a toddler, he developed a hernia which required surgery. Besides that, he developed pneumonia and almost died in the 4th grade. As a teenager he had a serious and painful problem with infected mosquito bites on his legs. In addition to his health problems, he was always teased and made fun of because of his height. He just wanted to be treated normally.
He was basketball's most dominant player ever! Wilt Chamberlain remains the only NBA superstar to average over 50 points per game, for an entire season. Standing nearly 7 feet 2 inches, the muscular Chamberlain was a tremendous athlete. No one could stop the former Kansas University center. After his rookie season in 1960, the NBA added the three-second violation and banned offensive goal-tending to reduce his impact on the game.
Wilt responded by focusing on defense and leading the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers and the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA titles. Along the way, he became the only player ever to score 100 points in a single game. Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, and Shaquille O'Neal are among the centers who have followed Chamberlain's example of excelling in both, no other big man has dominated the sport like Wilt Chamberlain once did !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wilt Chamberlain I did my African American report on Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain. Wilt Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1936. He was born with ten brothers and sisters, and had two great parents who loved them all. His father was a welder in a shipyard. Later on, Wilt’s father also became a janitor and eventually a handy man. Wilt’s mother was a stay-at-home mom who took care of all eleven children. Quotes from those who knew Wilt Chamberlain and his generosity
LAWRENCE The impact of Wilt Chamberlain has been felt by many who had lifelong friendships with the former University of Kansas basketball player, as well as by those who have been affected by his generosity. "Wilt Chamberlain's gift for KU will be known by generations of students. We are especially pleased that his gift will establish the Wilt Chamberlain Opportunity Scholarship, which will help students who face many obstacles in their pursuit of a college education. Opportunity scholarships are a high priority for the university because as tuition costs rise we want to make sure that we do not close the door on a college education for students with the greatest need."
KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway "Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest player to ever play at the University of Kansas, and there have been some great ones. Arguably, Wilt was one of the greatest athletes of all time in any sport. Personally, I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet and get to know Wilt, but I never did. However, on behalf of our basketball program, we'd like to thank Wilt, his family and the estate for making such a generous donation for the university and the KU men's basketball program. As much of a legend as Wilt was, it's great to know that he still thought to give something back to the University of Kansas."

Wilt Chamberlain Wilt Chamberlain, a Los Angeles Laker basketball player, made an inflammatory remark after a long delay prior to boarding a TWA flight from Chicago to Philadelphia with the Laker Team. The remark was brought to the attention of TWA officials, who questioned Chamberlain and the coach in the jet way of the plane. Chamberlain became belligerent and left the boarding area. He later flew to Philadelphia via United Air Lines. United States Custom officials did not consider the remarks a threat, and did not file a complaint against Chamberlain. It was reported that he had made a bet on the Lakers winning the sixth game of the play offs in 1969 between Chicago and Boston. There were other allegations and/or rumors of his betting on basketball games. Part 01

Wilt Chamberlain
With 31,419 points scored over the span of his professional career, Chamberlain held the NBA record for points scored until 1984, when his record was surpassed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Other highlights of Chamberlain's NBA career include: a career average of 30.1 points per game, a career average of 22.9 rebounds per game, scoring 100 points in a single game (March 2, 1962), scoring 36 field goals in a game (March 2, 1962), and capturing 55 rebounds in a game (November 24, 1960). Chamberlain's career average of 30.1 points was an NBA record until broken by Michael Jordan; the rest are NBA records that still stand. Chamberlain was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.
His autobiography, written with David Shaw, Wilt: Just Like Any Other 7-Foot Black Millionaire Who Lives Next Door , was published in 1973. He also published a somewhat revealing book of further reminiscences entitled

Wilt Chamberlain died in his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, October 12, of suspected heart failure. Chamberlain holds the record for scoring the most points in one game (100 in 1962). Wilt Chamberlain, SF Warriors, seven foot center, took about three gigantic leaps across the length of the Harmon Gymnasium floor at USF and, with the greatest of ease, slam-dunked the ball like no other. This kid’s eyeballs jumped out of their sockets. The regulation sized NBA basketball seemed like a puny cantaloupe in his might grip. Amazing! As a city boy I got to see the San Francisco Warriors basketball team play before they went on to become the Golden State Warriors. Legendary Wilt the Stilt, or the Big Dipper, as he was called, was a sight to behold, especially for a wide-eyed youngster brand-new to the wonderful magic of live professional basketball, Wilt Chamberlain style. Down in San Franciscoís nightclub district, North Beach, on a hot Indian-Summer night, my buddies and I, out for a cool stroll in Beat terriortoty, spotted Chamberlain pulling up to the curb in his immaculate Bentley convertible. In a flash the Big Dipper ducked ionto the Condor, the Carlo Doda topless joint.
