Joe Ruklick may have assisted on one of the greatest feats in NBA history, and has insisted to the constant barrage of questions from the media over the years that he was the the Bob Uecker of pro basketball.
"I didn't play much and I didn't have a lot of ability," Rutlick told the Associated Press in 1987. Rutlick was Wilt Chamberlain's backup with the Philadelphia Warriors.
"I wasn't the clown like Uecker was in baseball, but I played basketball like he played baseball. I was billed as a backup center, but Wilt was never hurt and my production was negligible." Yet Rutlick, an All-America player at Northwestern, helped Chamberlain accomplish one of the NBA's greatest feats. He fed Chamberlain for the basket that gave Chamberlain his 100th point of the game against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962 in Hershey, PA.

Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most dominant players in NBA history, died Tuesday, October 12 at the age of 63. Chamberlain’s stature in the game was as big as he was. He stood 7-1 and towered over foes from high school in Philadelphia through college at the University of Kansas and finally in the NBA, where he played for three teams from 1959 through 1973. Among Chamberlain’s many achievements was the NBA’s only 100-point game, which came March 2, 1962, while playing for Philadelphia against the Knicks. Chamberlain led the NBA in scoring for each of his first seven seasons and finished his career with a 30.1 scoring average. photo gallery career stats the 100-point game wilt chooses kansas ...

The House That Wilt Built Laker Star Lives It Up in Mansion Befitting Wealthy 7-Footer
by Mal Florence
Los Angeles Times
March 13, 1972
It was like a visit to another planet. Here was this triangular-shaped house with its surrealistic rooms and features dominating the landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains. Bel-Air - and as far as one can see - is the front yard, the San Fernando Valley the back. Through the cavernous, $1.5 million structure strode a giant in a pale gold antelope suit. He would be the most imposing figure in any gathering, and now he was omnipresent showing up almost genie-like to greet guests as they walked through the 14-foot high front door or laughing as women squealed with delight when they lolled in the purple plushness of his playroom. Wilt Chamberlain held open house Saturday night, and the party, like the man, was a huge success. "After looking at this pad, Hugh Hefner is a square," said one impressed guest in comparing Wilt's home to the Playboy publisher's Chicago manse.

He was basketball's unstoppable force, the most awesome offensive force the game has ever seen. Asked to name the greatest players ever to play basketball, most fans and aficionados would put Wilt Chamberlain at or near the top of the list. Dominating the game as few players in any sport ever have, Chamberlain seemed capable of scoring and rebounding at will, despite the double- and triple-teams and constant fouling tactics that opposing teams used to try to shut him down. As Oscar Robertson put it in the Philadelphia Daily News when asked whether Chamberlain was the best ever, "The books don't lie."

    Chamberlain, Wilt,
Wilt Chamberlain (right), 1965 AP/Wide World also called WILT THE STILT, byname of WILTON NORMAN CHAMBERLAIN (b. Aug. 21, 1936, Philadelphia), U.S. professional basketball player, who is considered to be one of the greatest offensive players in the history of the game. As the first outstanding centre more than seven feet tall, Chamberlain, in the 1961-62 season, became the first player to score more than 4,000 points in regular-season National Basketball Association (NBA) games. Chamberlain was sought after by more than 100 colleges and universities after his play at Overbrook High School (Philadelphia). He played two years (1956-58) at the University of Kansas (Lawrence) and played with the barnstorming professional Harlem Globetrotters (1958-59) before joining the NBA Philadelphia Warriors (1959-65, in San Francisco 1962-65), the Philadelphia 76ers (1965-68), and the Los Angeles Lakers (1968-73) before retiring as a player in 1973. During his NBA career he scored 31,419 points (with a game average of 30.1), 100 points in a single game (March 2, 1962), 36 field goals in a game (March 2, 1962), and 55 rebounds (Nov. 24, 1960), and he played 47,859 minutesall NBA records. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke Chamberlain's career point record in 1984. Late in his career he improved on defense and as a team player.
