Main Basketball htmlAdWH('7003382', '234', '60'); HISTORY OF THE SOUTHERN BASKETBALL LEAGUE Contributors - Jack Black, Robert Bradley and Al Kirk The Southern Basketball League, with Raymond Johnson, sports editor of The Nashville Tenneseean, as commissioner and Jim Price of Birmingham as league secretary was organized in the fall of 1947 with a planned 50-game schedule as franchises were placed in Birmingham (Vulcans), Gadsden (Whiz Kids), Jackson (Senators), Memphis (Legionnaires), Mobile (Bears), Montgomery (Rebels), and Nashville (Vols). The league made its debut on November 29 as Nashville defeated Birmingham 51-50 with Nashville captain Dave Scobey scoring a game-high 18 points. Montgomery, led by player-coach Lenny Rader finshed with the league's best record in the regular season at 43-6. The Memphis club relocated to Mobile, AL where Bob Murphy would lead the league in scoring; and the Gadsden team finished the season in Bessemer, AL. A round robin playoff tournament between first-place Montgomery, third-place Nashville and fourth-place Birmingham (the second-place club, Jackson declined to participate due to player injuries) began on March 5 with Nashville and Montgomery advancing to the league championship series. After losing the opening game of the series, Montgomery won the next three to claim the league title. Bessemer, Birmingham, Jackson and Mobile all dropped out of the league following the season and the Birmingham Steelers, Laurel Oilers and New Orleans Sports (who had played in the Professional Basketball League of America as the Hurricanes) were recruited to bring the league back up to five clubs.

History
U.S. teams demonstrated basketball at the Olympics in 1904, 1924, and 1928. When the game became an official Olympic sport in 1932, its inventor, James Naismith, was given the honor of tossing the opening jump ball for the first game. The United States completely dominated Olympic basketball competition through 1964, winning 54 consecutive games, often by as many as 50 or 60 points. In 1968, though, most of the top college players passed up the Olympic trials because they didn't want to jeopardize their professional careers, and Yugoslavia was generally favored to win the gold medal over the young, little-known U. S. team. However, the Americans extended the winning streak to 63 games, beating Yugoslavia, 65-50, for the championship. The streak went to 71 games in 1972, but it ended in the Gold Medal game against the Soviet Union, amidst much furore. The U. S. led, 50-49, with three seconds to play. Inbounding the ball from under their own basket, the Soviets twice threw it the length of the court without scoring, but both times the officials ruled that the scoreboard clock had to be reset. On the third try, the court-length pass succeeded and a Soviet player scored the winning basket. The U. S. appealed the decision but lost, and the team unanimously voted not to accept the silver medal.

Even though head coach Hank Iba had a spectacular pool of talent, the 1964 U.S. team began competition wary that their reign as the world's best may be on the line. With the Soviets having made great strides on offense, the USSR was considered a co-favorite for the Olympic gold.
