What happened to Bill Bradley? The rise and fall of a US presidential candidate
By Shannon Jones 5 April 2000 Use this version to print The collapse in early March of the presidential campaign of former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley illustrates a number of significant features of US politics. Last fall the media lavished considerable attention on Bradley's challenge to Vice President Al Gore for the Democratic nomination, portraying Bradley as a man who articulated a new vision for the country. Opinion polls pointed to a Bradley win in New Hampshire, the state holding the first presidential primary. By February, however, the Bradley campaign was faltering badly. In March, after an unbroken string of primary defeats, he withdrew from the contest. How could Bradley's presidential bid, once highly touted, evaporate ignominiously in the course of only a few weeks? In the wake of Bradley's withdrawal, media commentators advanced a number of banal explanations. A

    EXTRA! Update , October 1995
    BILL BRADLEY:
    THE "SPECIAL" SENATOR
When Sen. Bill Bradley (D.-N.J.) announced he was retiring from the Senate, ABC News pundit Jeff Greenfield wrote a column ( Dayton Daily News , 8/18/95) about how much "respect and admiration" the "political establishment," including the Washington press corps, has for him. One example Greenfield gives of the integrity that made Bradley "so special as a senator" was that he was the only Northern Democrat to support aid for the Nicaraguan Contras. And Greenfield notes that when Bradley "fought for simplification of the tax laws in 1986, no one ran to check the list of contributors to his campaigns to see who would benefit from those changes." Well, why not? Bradley, who narrowly won re-election in 1990 over a candidate that he outspent 12 to 1, was highly indebted to corporate donors. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, from 1987 to 1992, Bradley got nearly $2 million in contributions from the finance, insurance and real estate sector. Almost $1 million of that came from securities and investment firms. Bradley got another million from lawyer/lobbyists. No doubt these fans of good government gave all this money to the senator because they knew it would have absolutely no effect on the way he voted. Greenfield went on to remark that Bradley, who is a former basketball player, "was one of the few white political figures who had spent years working with blacks who were equal to or superior to his abilities."

      Bill Bradley
Outsider vs. insider: Gore's toughest challenger
      by Beth Rowen
Bill Bradley has proposed strict hand-gun regulations as well as campaign-finance reforms and improved race relations. This article was posted on August 27, 1999.
Former New Jersey senator Bill Bradley has fought tough battles on the basketball court and in public office. But his most rigorous contest lies ahead. Indeed, he faces an uphill battle in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, with formidable competition from Vice President Al Gore.
      Tighter Gun Control, Campaign-Financing
Fundraising and gun control set the two candidates apart, however most of their views vary only subtly. While both promise to be tough on guns, Bradley's proposals go beyond Gore's.
In addition to a three-day waiting period before an individual can buy a firearm and licenses for gun owners (which Gore also favors), the former senator has proposed mandatory handgun registration and removing gun dealers from residential neighborhoods. Gore has proposed a constitutionally questionable ban on "gang-related" clothing.

    Bradley, William (Bill) Warren
American political leader and professional basketball player, United States senator from New Jersey (1979-1997).
Born in Crystal City, Missouri, Bradley was educated at Princeton University, where he was an All-American basketball player. He was a member of the victorious 1964 U.S. Olympic basketball team and was named college player of the year in 1965. Graduating with honors in 1965, he turned down a lucrative contract offer from the New York Knickerbockers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to accept a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. He joined the Knicks as a forward in 1967 and retired from basketball ten years later, after a career that included two NBA championships. His book Life on the Run (1976) was hailed for its honesty and insight into the world of professional athletes. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.
Bradley entered politics in 1978, winning his first electoral race and becoming the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. Hardworking and conscientious, he was reelected in 1984 and 1990 and developed into a leading liberal Democratic spokesman. One of the Senate's experts on energy-related issues, he advocated increased federal aid to schools, freedom of choice on abortion, energy conservation, decreased defense spending, and a moratorium on nuclear power plants. In 1991 he opposed the use of force in the Persian Gulf. He also opposed the nominations of both Robert M. Gates as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court. In July 1992 Bradley was a keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention in New York City.

Almost two decades after its original publication and more than fifteen years after its author retired from the New York Knicks to become a United States senator, this account of twenty days in a pro basketball season remains a classic in the literature of sports, unparalleled in its candor and intelligence. Bill Bradley is also the author of Time Present, Time Past, a memoir of his years in the U.S. Senate.

Average customer rating: A Must-Read Bill Bradley's account of three weeks in the life of an NBA team in the '70's is as much a stunningly insightful social commentary as it is a nice, easily-rambling, "On the Road"-style ride. Beautiful. This book is very inspiring. Bradley is the man.

Career: Professional basketball player, New York Knicks, 1967-77; U.S. senator, 1978-96; author, public speaker, lecturer. In basketball and politics: On the court, Bradley developed an unselfish style that favored the silky pass over the dazzling jump shot. But when he had to, the lanky forward could light up the scoreboard, and he helped lead the Knicks to an NBA title in 1970. In his 18-year Senate career, Bradley focused on a handful of large issues and generally stayed away from the hurly-burly of daily politics. Among Bradley's legislative triumphs were an overhaul of the tax system in 1986 and a complex reform of Western water laws in 1992. Did you know?
