One of this country's most remarkable public figures, Bill Bradley has had a multifaceted career as an athlete, author, and elected leader. Born in Missouri in 1943, Bradley has since high school distinguished himself as both an athlete and an intellectual. He played three varsity seasons on Princeton University's basketball team and was a two-time All-American. During his senior year he was named College Player of the Year and helped lead Princeton to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. After graduation, Bradley decided to put his basketball career on hold for two years in order to attend Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He returned to play for the New York Knicks, where he was an integral part of two world championship teams and an all-star. His experiences as a basketball player formed the basis for his celebrated first book, Life on the Run.
After retiring from basketball with a Hall-of-Fame career, Bradley turned his attention to another longstanding passion, government. Having lived in New Jersey during his career with the Knicks, Bradley ran as the Democratic candidate for Senator there and won handily. Upon arriving in office, he focused on issues such as tax reform and eventually established a reputation as one of the most intelligent and principled public servants in Washington. He was re-elected in 1984 in a landslide, and again in 1990 in a much more closely-contested race with future New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman.

An Interview with Bill Bradley Jack Newfield
Bill Bradley was a basketball star at Princeton, a Rhodes Scholar, and played on two championship teams for the New York Knicks. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 1986. Bradley is the author of four books, most recently, Values of the Game. He is now considering a campaign for the presidency in the year 2000. Newfield: When you were in high school, you gave a famous interview in which you were asked who were your heroes at age seventeen and a half. You said Bob Pettit, who played for the St. Louis Hawks; Mark Hannah, probably the founder of soft money; and the Reverend Billy Graham. Now that you're in your mid-fifties, do you have any heroes? or role models? Who are they now? Bradley: Not really. You have people you admire, role models for emulation, when you're younger, but not so much when you're older. You've lived life enough to know that everybody is human, nobody's a hero per se. In terms of those who influenced my politics, I did a senior thesis about Harry Truman's first re-election to the Senate in 1940. That was influential. And probably Robert Kennedy had a bigger impact on me than anybody else. Newfield: What about Bobby?

The highlight of the pre-Bradley entourage was the bomb-sniffing German Shepherd (pet dogs are banned by the orthodox). Other highlights of the waiting period included watching women with strollers barreling through the Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on, students in uniform barreling through the Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on, and friends and families connected to the school barreling through Secret Service barriers as if nothing were going on. Besides myself and my co-workers, the event was attended by US Senator Moynihan, a big endorser of Bradley; a City Councilman who was ignored by the press and swallowed up by the crowd and an anonymous State Senator. There was also the president of the Boro Park YM-YWHA, who organized the event and managed to get two photos of Bradley with him and some family members.

The town played a major role in yesterday's event 5,000 local women baked cookies, for example and Bradley began his speech with fond memories of Crystal City, and how it had shaped him. The man From Crystal City BILL BRADLEY, Democratic Presidential Candidate: Crystal City had one stoplight then, but it had a rich array of ethnic families. When it came to race, the town was a little ahead of its time. The Little League was integrated before the schools. As a teenager, I can remember walking out of restaurants in the boot heel of Missouri because they wouldn't serve our black catcher. Racism disturbed me then, and still angers me now. For me, the only thing deserving of hate is hate itself. (Applause)

I Carried Bill Bradley's Water
by Coultas W. Kemp
Character formation is a layering process that's assembled from birth to death. It's not instant, but a mantle woven from an individual's successes and failures. It can be seen in a simple event, by the way a man treats those who can do nothing for him. Character can be better explained through the intricate stitches made by time's alterations. When all else is lost, character is the fabric left to insulate a man when he's down. As a high school junior in 1960, I was up against some tough competition during tryouts on the basketball court. In a clumsy maneuver I tripped myself and lay licking my wounds. My lips couldn't figure out if the salty taste in my mouth was blood, sweat or tears, but when I looked up, I saw an encouraging face close to mine. Embarrassment wrapped me in its red-hot cloak of confusion, and I wondered if there might be a hole big enough to crawl into. An enormous palm appeared above my face when Bill Bradley offered a helping hand. As I stood, I realized that my head was only chest high to his Lincoln-like proportions, and with that insight a youthful vision of being a basketball player was junked in the yard of broken dreams. At an awkward time, I was touched by a paragon that day and became water bearer for the future standard bearer of our nation. Although water-boy might be considered a lowly position in most sports, I was convinced that it was the most important job on the team. A person who carried water was the bearer of life. It's true that in the distribution of physical attributes size and might overlooked me, but that didn't stop me from carting water for the winning Crystal City Missouri High School basketball team of 1960-61.

Bill Bradley · Born the son of a small-town banker in Crystal City, Missouri, a blue-collar town thirty-six miles south of St. Louis, Bill Bradley, as a youngster, was kept active by his mother who enrolled him in piano, trumpet, French, swimming, basketball, boxing and French horn. In the summer, Bill played American Legion baseball and learned about racial prejudice when his team traveled with two black players and was refused service at a New Madrid restaurant. At Joplin, they were housed in a second-rate, run-down hotel because the good places turned them away. Bradley carried these memories with him to adulthood. From his father, he inherited a strong sense of ethics and a strict code of conduct. His father's bank never foreclosed on a single homeowner throughout the Great Depression. From this, young Bill learned to respect those who were less fortunate than he. Bill was an excellent student and, upon graduation from high school, was accepted into Princeton University, a school that did not give out athletic scholarships, but had a great record for producing Rhodes scholars. He was an outstanding student, but he retained his love for sports. Nature determined what sport he was ultimately to play since Bill grew to be somewhat tall for baseball but just right for basketball. He practiced hard, trying to perfect his shooting. He decided that if he failed at basketball it wouldn't be for a lack of effort. He became a three-time All-American. Upon graduation from Princeton, he was drafted by the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association. But Bradley put his basketball career on hold, and opted for a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford. He spent his semester breaks traveling throughout Europe. These experiences supplemented the master's degree he received from Oxford in politics, philosophy and economics. He knew that he ultimately wanted a political career.

The Branding of Bill Bradley
The candidate who shuns packaging has come to appreciate its uses
By Margaret Carlson
November 15, 1999
Web posted at: 1:53 p.m. EST (1853 GMT) Bill Bradley is the uncola, the all-natural candidate so pure he would entertain no candidacy before its time. He still drives a battered '84 Oldsmobile, and a few weeks ago in New Hampshire he bought new dress shoes to replace a pair he'd owned for 25 years. He doesn't mall-test his ideas. He scolds anyone who presses him on an issue he hasn't thought through. He won't go negative; for that matter, he barely goes positive. The Anti-Clinton, he slicks himself up for no man. Realizing that hiring high-end imagemakers was not the right image for their image-free candidate, the Bradley campaign gagged the Crystal Group last week. While not taking issue with the Adweek piece, campaign spokesman Eric Hauser tried to reclaim pride of authorship for the candidate, saying Bradley's announcement address was "a stew primarily prepared by Bradley."

Fund-raiser scores with candidate's emphasis on 'values of the game'
By Jennifer Potash
Princeton Packet Staff Writer
Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999

Twenty years after former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley's first campaign, during which he eschewed his Princeton University and New York Knick basketball glory, he embraced those memories Sunday afternoon with a star-filled fund-raiser as he makes a bid for the presidency of the United States.
"This game has meant a great deal in my life," Sen. Bradley told a crowd of 7,500 at the famed arena.
"This arena is part of my life. All of you are part of my life. It is great to have my teammates with me for what is my biggest game."
Although Sen. Bradley, a Democrat, made a name for himself in the Senate on tax reform, attempts to restore land to the Sioux in South Dakota and speaking out on race relations, those issues were not the main attraction of the Madison Square Garden event, which was expected to bring in at least $1.5 million. Instead, the marquee names of former Knicks Willis Reed, Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Dave DeBusschere and Jerry Lucas and other NBA all-stars, Oscar Robertson, Los Angeles Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius "Dr. J" Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers, and Portland Trailblazers and Boston Celtic star Bill Walton, were the big attraction at the event billed as "Bill Bradley: Back in the Garden."
