Profile of Bill Bradley
Party: Democrat Born: July 28, 1943, in Crystal City, Missouri, the only child of Warren and Susan Bradley, a banker and a schoolteacher. The Bradleys lived a comfortable, middle-class life in a small, blue-collar company town on the banks of the Mississippi River, thirty-six miles south of St. Louis. Family: Bradley is married to the former Ernestine Schlant, a professor of German and Comparative Literature at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
  • They have one daughter and Mrs. Bradley has an adult daughter from a previous marriage.
  • Schlant most recently authored The Language of Silence , a study of German literature's reaction to the Holocaust. Religion: Presbyterian Military: Joined the Air Force Reserves, based at McGuire AFB in Wrightstown, NJ. He served on active duty for nearly six months in 1967. Web Site: BillBradley.com

    Bill Bradley on Civil Rights
The Christian right should not dominate politics
Q: Will you follow John McCain’s example and criticize the Christian right? A: I think that the far right has gone too far time after time after time on social issues and has tried to dominate this country with their particular viewpoint. I think it’s important to resist that. I’ve always resisted that. As a Senator I’ve never voted in ways that they wanted. And I would be very emphatic in saying that religion should not be a part of politics. Source: Democrat debate in Los Angeles Mar 1, 2000
Stop discrimination against same-sex domestic partnerships
Q: Do you support California Prop 22? If passed, only marriages between a man and a woman would be recognized. GORE: I oppose it. Under current California law, only marriages between a man and a woman are recognized. Frankly, I think that we should have legal recognition for domestic partnerships that have legal protections. I do not favor changing the definition of a traditional marriage as it has always been understood between a man and a woman. But this Knight initiative, Prop 22, is in part a kind of a mean-spirited wedge initiative and I just think it’s time for us to put this discrimination against gays and lesbians behind us. I think that it’s time just to leave people alone because of the way God made them and stop the discrimination. BRADLEY: I don’t support the Knight initiative. Like Al, I don’t support gay marriage, but I do support domestic partnership legislation that would provide to gays and lesbians all the legal and financial rights that accrue to a state of marriage.

by Harvey Frommer The urbane and sophisticated Bill Bradley, whose name and image dominated headlines as he pursued the Democratic Presidential nomination is, in many ways, the same person he was when he starred for the New York Knickerbockers of the NBA. But in one way he is definitely different. Back then he was known as "Dollar Bill." It was a nickname he definitely deserved. While other National Basketball Association stars drove flashy cars and sported even more flashy clothes, Bradley lived simply and dressed even simpler. His apartment, a friend once said, "looked like a Holiday Inn room before the maid showed up." Bradley reportedly used paper clips when his cuff buttons gave out. His contract with the New York Knickerbockers called for $500,000 for four years, a great deal of money for that time period. But the nickname Bill Bradley received was not for the money he earned, some said, but for the money he saved. Many players believe he saved the first buck he ever made. There was a precedent for this behavior. While a Rhodes Scholar for two years at Oxford University, Bradley lived out of what was called "a large and appallingly messy suitcase." But he had more important things on his mind than style and consumer comforts.

The Black Brimmer American Bar and Grille in downtown Manchester (NH) is not usually a daytime venue for anything, bar the City Hall gang who use the place as a lunchtime watering hole. But 9:45 am on Saturday, July 31, 1999 found a clutch of photographers huddled outside the "nite spot", swapping cigarettes and war stories and occasionally scanning a deserted Elm Street. Entering the Brimmer , we were asked to fill out a brief registration form and guided toward coffee and Danish. We helped ourselves and found seats with uninterrupted views of the stage. By 10:00, the place was starting to fill up. We shuffled up and made space for a pair of elderly couples. At 10:20 - fairly punctual for a politician - Bill Bradley arrived to spontaneous applause. I knew little of Bradley, other than having read John McPhee 's essay on the Knicks' fabled basketball player ( A Sense of Where You Are , 1965). I had deliberately avoided reading anything about the former New Jersey Senator's bid for the Democratic Presidential nomination. I wanted to see the man, get a sense of his being. He's tall, but not as tall as you might expect for a former basketball player (I suspect they've got taller in the 30 years since Bradley dominated the court). He has a paunch. His smile is attractively lop-sided and his eyes twinkle. There's more than a touch of the

Scholastic Professional basketball in the 1970s was not the kind of place one would expect to find the intellectual Bradley. Teammates once cool toward Bradley warmed to this Ivy League golden boy after they realized his tremendous heart and work ethic. After failing to win any primaries against his opponent, Al Gore, Bradley announced he was withdrawing from the race and endorse Gore. As a result of his involvement in many committees, the fact that he pushed for issues he supported and vast changes that he helpred to make in the tax system, Bill Bradley has had a very positive effect on American politics.

A Sense of Where You Are : Bill Bradley at Princeton > Customer Review #1: A Man With a Passion for the Game

Bill Bradley, a three-time basketball all-American at Princeton, Olympic gold medalist, Rhodes scholar, member of the New York Knicks and two time NBA champion definitely has a passion for basketball. This books helps show what goes into the making of a champion. Discipline, selflessness, respect, courage, imagination and passion are elements that made him a success on and off the court. I knew nothing at all about Bill Bradley before reading this book, but I have great respect for his personal code and his shining example.

Former basketball star and current Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley hasn't fouled an opponent on the basketball court in years, but lately he's fouling the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bradley claims the congressional vote on the Act led to which political party he would join. Oh, really? On October 9, 1999 at an Iowa Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner, Bradley exclaimed: "I remember the exact moment that I became a Democrat. It was the summer of 1964; I was an intern in Washington between my junior and senior year in college. And I was in the Senate chamber the night the 1964 Civil Rights Act passed that desegregated public accommodations in America... And I became a Democrat because it was the party of justice. It was Democrats that stepped forward that evening in the Senate and cast their vote that washed away the stain of segregation in this country." I believe that Democrats have lied about who supported the Civil Rights Act for so long that they actually believe their lies. But anytime this lie is retold, I feel compelled to debunk it. So here we go again...

One of this country's most remarkable public figures, Bill Bradley has had a multifaceted career as an athlete, author, and elected leader. Born in Missouri in 1943, Bradley has since high school distinguished himself as both an athlete and an intellectual. He played three varsity seasons on Princeton University's basketball team and was a two-time All-American. During his senior year he was named College Player of the Year and helped lead Princeton to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. After graduation, Bradley decided to put his basketball career on hold for two years in order to attend Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He returned to play for the New York Knicks, where he was an integral part of two world championship teams and an all-star. His experiences as a basketball player formed the basis for his celebrated first book, Life on the Run.
After retiring from basketball with a Hall-of-Fame career, Bradley turned his attention to another longstanding passion, government. Having lived in New Jersey during his career with the Knicks, Bradley ran as the Democratic candidate for Senator there and won handily. Upon arriving in office, he focused on issues such as tax reform and eventually established a reputation as one of the most intelligent and principled public servants in Washington. He was re-elected in 1984 in a landslide, and again in 1990 in a much more closely-contested race with future New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman.
