Champagne descends into his musty stacks in order to lift up you, the wretched Netsfan. Two books with (not so) dearly departed Nets in them, brought to your attention.
T he L ast S hot
by Darcy Frey,Touchstone Books, 1994
Synopsis: A Coney Island Hoop Dreams . Author Frey follows three Lincoln High School hotshots (Russell Thomas, Corey Johnson, and Tchaka Shipp) through the college basketball recruiting mill.
Nets Content: "Suddenly a ferocious grinding noise fills the air. It gets louder and louder, and then a teenaged kid riding a Big Wheel careers onto the court. He darts through the playground crowd, leaving a wake of pissed-off players, hops off his ride, and watches it crash kamikaze-style into the fence." Behold Stephon Marbury, 14 year-old phenom, making his memorable entrance into The Last Shot 's preface. Then it's goodbye until more than 2/3rds of The Last Shot
After I read this book in 2000 I remarked to Joe, "It's amazing that Stephon has not been an attitude problem through all this losing." We'd ignored the loud warning noises from Minnesota – Steph had demanded to be traded out of frozen Minneapolis and away from Garnett, a higher-paid star – as pure sour grapes. But good lord, when Thorn shipped him to Phoenix! Some of the beat guys, held hostage by his moods for 2 1/2 years, spewed pure anti-Stephon venom (go ahead, read 'em in Media.

Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Ray Allen, Marcus Camby, Stephon Marbury and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. These players, and dozens more, would be suiting up for their college teams this winter if they had not given up their remaining eligibility in pursuit of pro careers. Some, like Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant, have skipped college altogether and gone straight to the NBA following their prep careers. This mass exodus of stars to the pros has created a parity never before seen in college basketball. More teams than ever have realistic Final Four aspirations. Schools are looking increasingly to the junior college ranks and to transfers as players leave early and recruits fail to qualify immediately under the NCAA's new and tougher admissions standards. The road to Indianapolis is wide open. The teams with the most talent are the teams with the biggest underachievers and the Top 25 is full of teams that have failed to live up their potential. The team with this year's most complete blend of incumbents, freshmen and transfers is the Cincinnati Bearcats. They are the early favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis. Here's a look at the Top 10:
