Extensions, Extensions
Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, teams have until the first day of the season to sign players entering the fourth year of a rookie contract to an extension. This year the Class of '98 was due for extensions, and today I'm going to take a look at the results.
While contract extensions may seem like a dull topic, the way the NBA is structured this is pretty important stuff. The salary cap and luxury tax rules combine to really stick it to teams that sign players to bloated contracts (this is yet another way that basketball is superior to baseball, but I digress ...). One bad contract makes it more difficult to maneuver; two makes it almost impossible to keep all your good players, let alone add new ones. With those thoughts in mind, I thought we'd take a look at the guys who did and didn't get extensions, and evaluate the decisions made by each club. I've sorted them into seven categories: Category 1: The No-Brainers Just three years into their careers, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce and Vince Carter are already among the best players in the league. They got identical 6-year, $85 million extensions (the maximum allowed under the CBA), and they deserved them. No further discussion is necessary here.

Dear Alley
I can't think of anything interesting to say on my own today, so I thought I'd run through the mailbag and let the readers talk:
Dear Alley : The PER is a great tool/system, but one thing is missing: minutes per game. I already agreed with you that this should not be included in the PER calculation but I think that when you publish PER of players that don't play much, especially rookies, you have to publish their MPG too. This will give a better picture. Regarding Mike Miller and his ROY last year. I think you should consider not only his stats, but also the role that he had to take as a rookie, helping to carry his team with a lot of injuries. Alleyoop.com: You're right, I should have included MPG (minutes per game) in the rookies article, although it wouldn't have altered my conclusions. As far as last year's Rookie Award, you raise a valid point: Richardson played over 10 minutes per game less than Miller. I just think Richardson was so much better that they should have given it to him anyway. Dear Alley : You may as well have bolded Jonathan Bender's name while you were at it... he's not gonna have much of a career.

Huskies Top Oregon State Improve to 11-3 for first time since 1984. Jan. 17, 1998 CORVALLIS, Ore. Three Washington players combined to score 59 points, led by the 22 of Deon Luton in a 70-55 victory over Oregon State at Gill Coliseum. Washington (11-3, 4-1) won its fourth straight game against Oregon State (9-8, 0-6), its longest streak over the Beavers since 1961. The win, paired with a decison at Oregon two days earlier, gave the Huskies their first sweep of a Pac-10 road series since 1987. It was the first road sweep in Oregon since 1986. The UW improved to 11-3 for the first time since 1984 and 4-1 in conference play for the first time since 1987. Luton scored 15 second-half points, helping the Huskies stretch a 29-26 halftime edge. Donald Watts scored 15 of his 19 points after intermission and Todd MacCulloch finished with 18 points. The Beavers drew within 49-46 on a jumper by Ron Grady with 9:15 left in the game. Washington responded with an 11-4 run over the next five minutes. MacCulloch tallied the first six points during the surge that resulted in a commanding 60-50 Husky margin.
