SoCalHoops College News Report Corey Benjamin To Skip Final
Two Years Of College For NBA(April 8,1998) Is there no end to the number of kids who will declare early for the NBA? First it's Paul Pierce of Kansas. Then Korleone Young, who's never played a day of college ball in his life. Even Corey Hightower of Mt. Zion is hinting about the NBA. Now there's another college player, and a SoCal player no less, from Oregon State who has declared. Corey Benjamin (6'-6" So. G) who averaged 19.8 points and five rebounds this last season at Oregon State, said Wednesday he will also pass up his final two collegiate seasons to make himself available for the NBA draft. The announcement was made by Benjamin from Fontana High, his alma mater, where he averaged 27.6 points and 11.5 rebounds in his senior year. Benjamin, 20, averaged 17.5 points in two seasons at Oregon State, scoring 30 or more points in six games. He ranked among the Pacific-10 Conference's top 10 in steals and field goal percentage, and was one of four players in the league to lead his team in scoring and rebounding. "Corey's early entry in the NBA draft is a dream come true for him and his family, and I certainly wish him the best," Oregon State coach Eddie Payne said in a statement issued by the school. "Corey contributed greatly to the excitement of basketball at Oregon State. He is one of the most talented and gifted student-athletes I have ever been around. Corey needs to work on certain aspects of his game, but that is the case for every player at any level. I'm very happy for him, and I want to thank him for his efforts at Oregon State."

High School Basketball Recruits: A Tough Choice or Not?
High School Basketball Recruits: A Tough Choice or Not? by Latrell Williams of 1800-Sports.com It can't be easy as a High School senior having to choose between four years of college education and the opportunity to instantly start raking in over a million dollars per year as a professional NBA star. High School basketball recruits don't need to study for the SATs, meet with academic suitors or go through any of the rigors related to college preparation. Kobe's successful career in the NBA has made skipping college fashionable for today's future stars, and the future is now for players like Lebron James and up-and-coming High School phenoms, Dwight Howard and Josh Smith just to name a few. Many believe that with a few high school kids coming out this would eventually lead to swarms of them following in their predecessors footsteps. It apparently has but the end results may be somewhat more promising. Most of these highschoolers have since gone on to become model citizens if we can overlook Iverson's tiffs with the law and the current Kobe Bryant matter. High School basketball recruits are the norm nowadays. The top prospects of both 2003 and 2004, respectively, have been Highschoolers. Lebron James last year and Dwight Howard this year.

The 1996 USA Basketball Junior National Select Team, compiled of 11 of the top high school seniors from across the United States, fell 104-96 to an International Select Team in the second annual Hoop Summit to benefit the Basketball Hall of Fame. Held April 20 at Independence Arena in Charlotte, N.C., the game was telecast nationally by CBS.
1996 USA Junior National Select Team
"Basically, they played the game the way it was invented, like it was supposed to be played," commented USA coach George Glymph, head coach at Eau Claire High School. "They were prime time and we were show time, that's why they came out with the win. We were out coached and out played. They did a good job of showing us Americans how the game is supposed to be played." The U.S. controlled the opening tip as 6'11" center Jermaine O'Neal tipped the ball to guard Mike Bibby who drove the lane to put the USA on the board eight seconds into the contest. Following a layup by China's Gerger Wong for an early tie, the U.S. took control and went on to establish an eight point lead at 18-10 with 15:06 left in the half.
