Magic Magazine

FOR NEARLY ANYONE OUTSIDE OF ORLANDO plus even some fans around town, this would be a real stumper of a trivia question: Name the NBA player who stands 6-10, speaks with an English accent, tosses around words like "dubious" and "facade" during conversations, enjoys going to museums when he's not hanging out with kids, has a Web site that only casually touts basketball, received an honorary diploma from a high school he never attended and ... talks to scorpions. John Amaechi has a love for people, especially kids, but can do without scorpions. (Fernando Medina/NBA Photos) The answer: No. 13 in a Magic uniform

Darren Campbell
(b. 1975)
Darren Campbell, gold-medallist at the 1998 Budapest European Championships and silver-medallist at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, has been a member of the Sale Harriers Running Club since the age of 18, when he made his debut as a member of the 100 metres relay team at the 1993 Stuttgart World Championships. He had spent much of that year training in Australia with the likes of Linford Christie and Colin Jackson.
He is also a keen footballer and played for two successful seasons with Newport and at Weymouth Football Clubs, before returning to athletics. During the 1991 and 1992 he had developed into the most successful junior British athlete, with four Gold and two Silver Medals won at International Championships to his name.
After several very successful seasons, his performance deteriorated for a time with disappointing performances at the Olympic Trials in Birmingham in 1996 and an unfortunate episode in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was prevented from finishing the relay race when a team member dropped the baton before it reached him.

Utah Jazz sign John Amaechi
July 20, 2001
Salt Lake City, Utah
The Utah Jazz unveiled John Amaechi as the newest member of their playing roster on Friday. After passing a medical in the morning, he met the media in Salt Lake City that afternoon. Amaechi, who had previously been courted by the Jazz last summer prior to signing on for an additional season with the Magic, now faces the exciting prospect of lining up alongside NBA veterans Karl Malone and John Stockton, plus the talented young Russian forward Andrei Kirilenko - their 1999 first-round draft pick - who recently arrived in Salt Lake City from CSKA Moscow. The news certainly caught the Orlando media on the hop, as they had expected Amaechi to re-sign as a free agent, but the big man spots at the Magic have become very crowded, with this week's acquisition of both Horace Grant and Patrick Ewing, in addition to their recent draft picks Steven Hunter and Brendan Haywood who play the power forward and centre spots respectively. By his own admission, Amaechi had a tougher time with the Magic this past campaign, but still posted an average of 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds a game during regular season play.

John, a RIF ambassador, will be demonstrating his basketball skills and reading with year seven students (11 and 12 year olds) at five secondary schools in the Wythenshawe area. Thanks to funding from WyEAZs, the schools are participating in a RIF project that promotes the fun and fundamentals of reading by providing opportunities for young people to choose and keep free books. The aim of the project is to encourage reading for pleasure and to promote the benefits of book ownership. John, who currently appears on a nation-wide poster campaign for RIF, is a passionate supporter of literacy initiatives. “You can’t go wrong by encouraging people to read,” he says. “It’s one of the few things you can’t overkill.” John is a mentor to two teenage boys and is currently studying for a PhD in child clinical psychology so that he can work with disaffected young people once he retires as a professional player.

Coming off a slow night in the NBA (just one game, and a laugher at that), I thought now would be a good time to take a look at the leaders in some of the stats I present on this site from time to time.

What's the Story?
The State of the Game - John Amaechi, the UK's top basketball player, former Cleveland Cavalier and Panathanaikos star looks homeward at the domestic game and gives Britball his exclusive perspective.
To clarify, I am NOT running for any official position within the ranks of British hoops. Indeed, I have very little to gain or lose regardless of the state of the game. My return to England to play, is many years away, even with drastic reform. However, England is my home, its where I first got interested in basketball and where the door to a whole world of opportunities creaked open and allowed me to sneak out. The life I lead now, is thanks to a few people in basketball who believed in me, and despite a great many others who said it couldn't be done. Firstly, I do not have all the answers, I'm sure I only get to see part of the problem and not from every perspective, but I have made a study of the game of basketball in all the countries I have played and seen how it develops, is promoted, and sustains itself. I recognise that I'm not the only expert, but Id be selling myself short if I didn't claim to be one of them. Our kids must play. It's easy to blame Bosman ruling for this years changes and the loss of some British talent to Europe, but the fact is that Britain doesn't even follow the Bosman ruling. We (or is it they?) are doing it our own way. Five Americans per team? Two British teams squaring off with no British people on the floor. An all-star game with two or three British players. Two under-23 players at the end (the far end) of every bench - because its mandated (and its cheap). This is the reality of today's situation. On the other side, can you think of five British players that should play on every team? I've not been around to see them - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Mark Woods John Amaechi has never been shy of opening his mouth and speaking his mind. Now he has put his money in the same place as his regular vocal pronouncements so that the deficiencies which the 31 year old has long decried in the development system of his native land can be well and truly righted. The specifications are impressive: three international-sized courts with sprung wooden floors, an aerobics studio, fitness suite, physiotherapy services, and a smart bar with in-house conference facilities. With his mentor and childhood coach Joe Forber as architect in chief, it is the kind of centre which Amaechi could never find when, as a gangly, over-sized teenager, he opted to give up rugby and try his luck at a sport which seemed tailor made for someone of his considerable height. "In the old days, Joe's teams used to run around from crappy gym to crappy gym to get somewhere to practice," he recalls. "Now whatever they need to support playing basketball, they will have it." Amaechi, who initially left the UK at 17 to improve his game at high school in Ohio, has been a constant critic of the standard of coaching and facilities available in his native land. Having already backed Forber's extensive youth programme, putting his money where his mouth to construct its permanent home became an obvious goal.

By Alex Goff
Amaechi was born in Boston, but grew up in Manchester where his late mother had her medical practice. There he attended Stockport Grammar School where he played the only sport there was to play, rugby. As big, strong number 8, Meech found in rugby the refuge from a school experience he did not enjoy.
But then came another athletic calling. While preparing to play a rugby game, Meech saw some kids playing basketball. Now there was a game where he could use his height, he thought.
Toledo, Ohio
Amaechi saw his basketball skills develop, too, and he made a conscious decision to try to earn a spot in the NBA. To that end, he spent his senior year in living with a family in Toledo, Ohio.
Penn State
Meech graduated 11th in his class, and his basketball earned the attention of Vanderbilt University. After a year he transferred to Penn State in 1992, where he earned Academic All America honors twice. During his junior and senior years he led Penn State in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, eventually setting a school record in the last category.
But the call of the oval ball was there at Penn State, too.
