Steve Lipofsky BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that Danny Ainge, a player on two Celtics World Championship teams, has been hired as the Executive Director of Basketball Operations. In his new role with the club, Ainge will oversee all basketball matters related to the organization.
"I am very happy he accepted the position with us," said Celtics President Red Auerbach. "I know that it will be a great relationship because Danny is a worker. He has a great personality, he's smart and bleeds green."
Ainge, who was selected by Boston in the Second Round (31st pick) of the 1981 NBA Draft, spent the first seven-plus years of his playing career with the Celtics. He finished his career with the Green averaging 11.3 points and 4.4 assists per game. He was traded along with Brad Lohaus to the Sacramento Kings on February 23, 1989 in exchange for Ed Pinckney and Joe Kleine. Following the 1989-90 season, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. In July 1992, he signed with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent and spent three seasons with the club before retiring.

Antoine Walker calls Danny Ainge a 'snake'
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 12/11/2003 In many ways, Antoine Walker has moved on from the seven seasons he spent with the Celtics. He settled into his new Dallas home earlier this month and sold his Boston home earlier this week. The Celtics of the past with their 16 championships and storied rivalries no longer haunt Walker. But one player from Boston's last championship season does. ADVERTISEMENT Walker maintains that the deal director of basketball operations Danny Ainge struck with Dallas was ``personal'' and called him a ``snake.'' During an interview earlier this week in southern California, Walker discussed the trade that sent him and Tony Delk to Dallas Oct. 20 in exchange for Raef LaFrentz and Jiri Welsch. Walker charged that Ainge specifically dealt him to Dallas because he wanted ``to set my career back a little bit.'' Additionally, Walker said the transaction might have set the organization back ``three or four years,'' and that ultimately, Ainge will regret it. ``Danny wanted to get rid of me,'' said Walker. ``If you look at the trade, I think he really felt like I wouldn't mesh with these guys in Dallas. Me, personally, I think he was really trying to set my career back a little bit. If you really look at what I got traded for, it's got to be the biggest difference [in talent] in history. Usually, an All-Star gets traded for an All-Star. And you gave away Tony Delk, a proven scorer in this league.

Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday November 20, 1999 02:28 PM PROVO, Utah (AP) Austin Ainge, the son of Phoenix Suns coach and former BYU standout Danny Ainge, will follow his father's footsteps to play for the Cougars. The school announced Wednesday that Austin Ainge, a 6-foot-1 point guard, signed a national letter-of-intent to play at BYU, where his father was a standout guard from 1978-81. Austin Ainge averaged 17 points, six rebounds and five assists a game last season as a junior at Highland High School in Gilbert, Ariz. He plans to serve a two-year Mormon Church mission before playing. "Austin has a total understanding of the game and the unique ability to distribute the ball to teammates when they are ready to score, rather than just when they are open," said BYU coach Steve Cleveland. The younger Ainge is part of a recruiting class the school heralded as one of its best ever.

Danny Ainge : Danny Ainge is the best basketball player to have ever lived. To put it simple...he dominated the game. When he was not shooting and scoring, he was off getting in fights. Danny also made up alot of that killer Boston Celtics team of the 80's. He held the record many years for most playoff games played...most three pointers made..and most three pointer attempted. Every team he went to was a playoff contender. His number in Phoenix was 22. That is why his profile on my page is the 22nd profile. Afer he retired in Phoenix he was a broadcaster for lots of NBA games. He was great at that too. I mean the guy sould not go wrong. Two years ago he took over as coach for the Phoenix Suns and ever since then....the suns have been dominating. The Suns are the best and Danny Ainge rules my world. Back To Profiles!

An All-American and winner of the Wooden Award as college basketball player of the year in 1981, Ainge also played professional baseball while attending Brigham Young University. In parts of three seasons with the AL's Toronto Blue Jays, he batted only .220, playing primarily at second base. Because he seemed intent on baseball as a career, Ainge wasn't chosen until the second round of the 1981 NBA draft, by the Boston Celtics. The Celtics bought out his Toronto contract and he joined the team for the 1981-82 season. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Ainge started for two NBA championship teams with Boston, in 1984 and 1986. A good outside shooter, Ainge was known for hustling, aggressive play that involved him in a number of on-court fights. Boston traded him to the Sacramento Kings late in the 1988/89 season, and he went to the Portland Trail Blazers in 1990. After two seasons with Portland, Ainge became a free agent and signed with the Phoenix Suns in 1992. He retired in 1994. Ainge was the second player in NBA history to hit 900 three-point shots and the fourth to reach 1,000. On June 5, 1992, he tied the NBA playoff record by scoring 9 points in one overtime period vs. Chicago Bulls.

RENO, Nev. (AP) Nevada junior Kirk Snyder says he weighed it all his teammates' advice, his coach's concerns, his mother's insistence he eventually return to earn his college degree. But in the end, the 6-foot-6 swingman who helped lead the Wolf Pack to its first berth in the NCAA tournament's "Sweet Sixteen" said he couldn't pass up a chance to play next season in the NBA. "It's a dream come true," Snyder said about his decision to forgo his senior year at Nevada and enter the NBA draft in June. "It was a really, really hard decision, but now that I've made it, it feels like there's a big burden off my chest," he told The Associated Press "I just want to play basketball and get a chance to play with some of these athletes you see on TV," he said Tuesday from San Antonio. Snyder of Upland, Calif., was named the Western Athletic Conference's player of the year. He averaged nearly 19 points per game while playing every position but center for the Wolf Pack (25-9), who beat Michigan State and Gonzaga before falling to Georgia Tech in the regional semifinals at St. Louis, Mo. Snyder said he spent most of his first official day as a former collegiate athlete working out Tuesday in San Antonio.

Coach controls only his own staff
May 5, 2004 New Celtics coach Doc Rivers said yesterday he does not have final say over personnel decisions beyond those concerning his own staff, as he attempted to put to rest a report that appeared Monday night on ESPN.com. ADVERTISEMENT The report said Rivers told ESPN NBA analyst Jack Ramsay he had "authority to approve all personnel deals" and that it was "in writing in my contract." Not true. The final say remains with executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge, according to both Ainge and Rivers. "I was asked [by Ramsay], `Do you have control over personnel?' and I said, `Yeah, my personnel,' " said Rivers. "There was clearly a misunderstanding on what personnel means to him and what it means to me, though I never knew I was being interviewed. I thought we were having a personal conversation." When reached via email, Ramsay wrote, "I stand by my story." In a phone conversation yesterday, Rivers said "my personnel" referred to his assistants, one or two of whom he could name within a week.
