Cy Young: A Baseball Life > Customer Review #1: Well-researched and well written

It is a sheer joy to read a baseball biography as carefully and authoritatively done as is this excellent book. Young was an admirable man and this book examines his life and career as fully and as interestingly as is I think possible. I dont think I have ever read a more carefully done baseball book, and while I first heard of the author when I read his excellent The War of Austrian Succession, I enjoyed this excellent book much. He has a book on the 1924 baseball season which, judging from the care taken with this book, would no doubt be a delight to read. I for one am grateful that a real historian has chosen to give us a book such as this biography: a most satifying and informative study of a great pitcher full of interesting facts about baseball during the years from 1890 to 1911.
Cy Young: A Baseball Life > Customer Review #2: "Boring" book about an amazing "boring" pitcher THis book really is pretty boring, I have been an ardent baseball fan for over 50 years.Denton T. Young was a very boring person. My definition of the word is steady, hardworking, solid as a rock and honest as the day is long.I am sick and tired of reading about the Sammy Sosa,s and Kobe Bryant scandals. Boring is really good.

Cy Young A Baseball Life
Reed Browning
Winner of the Casey Award for the Best Baseball Book
of the Year Finalist for the Seymour Medal of the Society for American
Baseball Research A Choice Outstanding Academic Book
The first major biography of an American sports legend He was the winner of 511 major league baseball games, nearly a hundred more than any other pitcher. He threw three no-hitters, including the first perfect game in the new American League. He was among the original twelve players inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, and his name is now attached to the game's most prestigious pitching award. Yet for all his accomplishments, Cy Young remains to many baseball fans a legendary but little-known figure. This book re-creates the life of Denton True "Cyclone" Young and places his story in the context of a rapidly changing turn-of-the-century America. "Each year the top pitchers in both leagues are honored with the Cy Young Award, but how many of today's fans really know much about the winningest hurler of them all? Browning digs deep to uncover the real story behind this pitching legend, whose innovations were essential to baseball's growth in the 19th and early 20th century."

In our day, when a pitcher got into trouble
in a game, instead of taking him out, our
manager would leave him in and
tell him to pitch his way out of trouble.
Gosh, all a kid has to do these days is spit
straight and he gets forty-thousand dollars to sign. Control is what kept me in the big leagues for twenty-two years. I pitched Major League games in twenty-two years, and I never had a sore arm until the day I quit. My arm went bad in when I was in spring training, and I guess it was about time. All us Youngs could throw. I used to kill squirrels with a stone when I was a kid, and my granddad once killed a turkey buzzard on the fly with a rock. I thought I had to show all my stuff and I almost tore the boards of the grandstand with my fastball. One of the fellows called me 'Cyclone' but finally shortened it to 'Cy' and its been that ever since.

Perspectives on Cy Young He was the old fat guy who won 511 games, but there’s a lot more than meets the eye By Eric Enders
Published in the Major League Baseball 2001 Yearbook (February 2001) Ask a modern fan about Cy Young, and you’ll probably hear that it’s the name of the award Pedro Martinez takes home every year. Dig a little deeper, and you’ll find out he’s the pudgy guy who won an astounding 511 games around the turn of the century. But today, aside from that one staggering statistic, Cy Young is baseball’s most anonymous legend. Denton True Young got his nickname in the minors after he threw a wild pitch that tore a couple of wooden planks loose from the grandstand. An observer said the park looked like a cyclone hit it, and from then on box scores listed him as Cyclone Young. His nickname was the most colorful thing about him. As a superstar in the rough and tumble world of turn-of-the-century baseball, Young was something of an anomaly. He wasn’t a profane brawler like John McGraw, an raucous carouser like Ed Delahanty, or a lovable eccentric like Rube Waddell. Cy Young was a bashful farmer whose idea of a good time was chopping wood. Today we think of Cy Young as fat largely because candid snapshots didn’t become common until Kodak introduced the Brownie box camera in 1900 – meaning that all the action photos we have of Young are from the second, pudgier, half of his career. But far from being a turn-of-the-century David Wells, the young Young was unusually tall and prodigiously strong, one of the most powerful athletes of his day. He was the second-winningest pitcher of the 1890s, posting 267 victories for the Cleveland Spiders and St. Louis Perfectos (although it wasn’t until 1904 that he pitched his own perfecto, the first perfect game of the 20

Many historians and statisticians rank Cy Young as the greatest pitcher of all-time. Here's his bio and stats: He's the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter in two different centuries, and 'Cy' pitched three career no-hitters, including a perfect game. He won over 30 games or more 5 times. He is the only pitcher in history to win 25 games or more 12 times and only one to win 20 or more 15 times. He picked up his nickname 'Cy' as a young phenom because of the speed of his pitches ( like a 'Cyclone' ). Cy Young won 511 games in his career, the most ever, and he lost only 316, an outstanding percentage of .618. His career ERA was 2.63. He pitched in 906 games, 7354 innings and he fanned 2803 hitters. Cy Young started 815 games and completed an amazing 749 of them. "Young grew even more effective as the innings passed and Anson's Chicago's left the field beaten and blind with rage. Then the crowd which had laughed at the unique figure of the new pitcher arose in a mass and gave him an ovation." After the game 'Cap' Anson offered Cleveland $1,000 for the young phenom but was simply laughed out of town.

    History
As a baseball writer and president of the National League, Ford Frick was bothered by the fact that pitchers rarely received any consideration for the Most Valuable Player awards. After becoming commissioner of baseball in 1951, Frick began a campaign to establish an award for the outstanding pitcher in the major leagues. He finally succeeded in 1956, when the Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) approved such an award. It was named the Cy Young Memorial Award, for the great pitcher who had died in November of 1955. Originally, one BWAA member from each major league city took part in the balloting and was allowed to vote for just one pitcher. If there was a tie, a second vote was taken, with only the tied pitchers on the ballot. Once a pitcher won the award, he wasn't eligible to win again. However, that rule was abandoned in 1958. Many BWAA members wanted an award for each major league, but Frick opposed that idea. It was finally adopted in 1967, a little more than a year after Frick retired and was replaced by William D. Eckert. At the same time, the vote was expanded to include two writers from each major league city.

August, 2002 by Norman L Macht
YOU'RE OLD IF YOU REMEMBER the days when pitchers used big, sweeping windups: the arms pulled back behind them, then up over the headsometimes twice, the big high kick, the throwing arm reaching way back. A lot of energy went into those gyrations and windmills. Then in 1956, a pair of young Yankees right-handers, Bob Turley and Don Larsen, tried something different. Sitting in his home on Marco Island, Florida, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Bob Turley recalled those days, and credited pitching coach Jim Turner with launching their no-windup style of pitching. "He did it with both of us, but for different reasons," Turley said. "We were in Boston near the end of the season, getting ready to play the Dodgers in the World Series. Teams were stealing Larsen's pitches. To stop them, Turner suggested he hold the ball in his glove in front of him, and keep it there, with no windup. Then Turner turned to me and said, `I want you to do the same thing, because your windup is no good to you. All that rocking motion and going up over your head, your arm is going in the wrong direction before you throw. It's hurting your control."
