    PLAY BALL!
Japanese Baseball Players Head for the Majors
    June 10, 1998
Hideo Nomo (right) later left the Dodgers to join Masato Yoshii on the Mets. (Kyodo)
When Masanori Murakami joined the San Francisco Giants in 1964, he became the first Japanese to play baseball in the North American Major Leagues. And ever since Hideo Nomo signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1995, astonishing everyone with his pitching, the Major Leagues, once only a castle in the sky for most Japanese, have became familiar turf. Since Nomo, pitchers with good track records in Japan have been leaping across the Pacific one after the other. Even promising high-school baseball players not chosen in the Japanese draft are signing up with Minor League teams, which are directly affiliated with the Major Leagues.
Low Salaries Still Require High Motivation
Four people since Nomo have entered the Major Leagues from professional baseball teams in Japan. Shigetoshi Hasegawa became a member of the Anaheim Angels, Hideki Irabu signed with the New York Yankees, and Takashi Kashiwada and Masato Yoshii became part of the New York Mets team. (They were joined there by Nomo himself in June 1998.) All of these men are pitchers. Then there are the baseball players who skip Japanese pro ball entirely and knock directly on the Major League door. Their numbers are increasingJapan's professional baseball commissioner is aware of at least 40 such players. Follow-up surveys are not being conducted, so it is not clear just how many Japanese baseball players have stayed on as pros overseas.

By Compiled from Times wires Ex-Tiger killed in accident DETROIT Aurelio Rodriguez, a model of consistency at third base for the Tigers during the 1970s, died Saturday after being hit by a car on the city's southwest side. He was 52. Rodriguez was walking with an unidentified woman about 2 p.m. when the car apparently jumped a sidewalk and struck them before hitting a utility pole, police Sgt. Michael Matuzak said. Rodriguez had to be pulled from beneath the vehicle and was pronounced dead at Henry Ford Hospital. The 35-year-old pedestrian was in critical condition and the female motorist was in good condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital, spokeswoman Mattie Majors said. "We're shocked and saddened to have lost one of our own, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family," Tigers spokesman Tyler Barnes said.

Winfield will go to Hall as Padre
Dave Winfield will enter the Hall of Fame as a San Diego Padre, choosing his first team instead of the New York Yankees. "I had no idea when I was elected in January that I would have to think about it and look at this for so long, and from so many ways," Winfield said in a statement released by the Hall on Friday. "This has been an extremely tough decision." Winfield spent the first eight years of his career in San Diego, making four All-Star games. He will be the first Hall of Famer to have the Padres' logo on his plaque. "I went with the team that gave me my very first opportunity," he said. "All of my "firsts' happened in San Diego and that is where I developed as a player."

Arizona GRADING THE OFFSEASON: Some teams try to get younger; Arizona purposely got older by signing 1B Mark Grace, RF Reggie Sanders, LHP Jason Jacome and re-signing No. 5 starter Armando Reynosoall in their 30s. Grace and Sanders didn't seem to fill areas of greatest need, but the bench will be better with Greg Colbrunn and Danny Bautista returning to reserve roles and newly acquired Midre Cummings as a pinch hitter. But the team might miss lefty specialist Ban Plesac, now in Toronto. Grade: B- SPRING THING: The biggest issue is establishing a batting order, as only 2B Tony Womack (leadoff), C Damian Miller (eighth) and the pitcher (ninth) are set. HEAD-TO-HEAD: Barring injury, there are likely two roster spots open-backup catcher and backup infielder. Craig Counsell, Hanley Frias and Danny Klassen will contend for two infield spots, and all three are out of options. Counsell is the most established hitter; Frias has more experience at shortstop; Klassen, 25, has the most potential. Three catchers (Rod Barajas, Ken Huckaby, and Melvin Rosario) with 84 combined innings of big-league experience will have a shot at backing up Miller, with defense the determining factor.
