HAGERSTOWN, MD - While the New York Yankees had “the Babe”, as in Ruth, the Class D, Blue Ridge League had their own, “Babe”, as in Martinsburg’s Lewis Robert Wilson. Wilson, who would later be nicknamed “Hack” during his career in the Major Leagues, and eventually be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, gave many fans of the little Class D league along the northern end of the Blue Ridge mountains something to cheer about.
Rawlings led the league in batting, at bats, hits, singles, and was second in home runs behind Wilson, who also established another new league mark with a .717 slugging percentage. Though runs batted in were not counted in the league, Rawlings would have set a new league mark with 108 rbi’s, had they been counted. Wilson was not far behind, accumulating 94 rbi’s for the Blue Sox. Interesting enough, Rawlings, who married a Martinsburg girl during the off-season, started the season with the Waynesboro club, but became homesick, and asked Villagers Manager, “Country” Morris to be traded before the start of the season. Rawlings was traded to Martinsburg a few days before the season opened for an outfielder name Peddicord. Waynesboro later tried to nullify the trade, since Peddicord was soon released, but Baseball’s National Board of Arbitration upheld League President J. V. Jamison, Jr.’s in his decision on this transaction.

The greatest honor bestowed upon a professional baseball player is enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Just one percent (1%) of those who have played Major League Baseball have a plaque in Cooperstown. Overall, 237 of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served the game as Major and Negro League players, managers, executives, pioneers and umpires have a permanent residence in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The Members have been elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America and specially appointed committees, such as the Veterans' Committee, and the now-defunct Committee on the Negro Leagues. The author does an excellent job tying in the roar 20's and the city of Chicago into the book. Wilson's best years were spent in Chicago at Wrigley Feild with the Cubs. All the accomplishments and downfalls of Wilson are noted. What the author does leave the reader wondering is first who exactly is this complicated yet modest man, which may be of no fault of his own. Second, the author fails to describe why the small West Virginia town of Martinsburg was so important to a man who was a star in the "Second City". As Solid as Hack Wilson I found this to be a very well written and very interesting book. Clifton Blue Parker has done an excellent and very thorough and complete research of a rather difficult subject, and pulled off a solid read from start to finish. Clifton Parker is correct in one of his assessments late in this book...People are forgetting Hack Wilson. Here today and gone tomorrow aptly applies to the career and life of Hack Wilson. That is sad indeed. Hack Wilson was a character of the game both on and off the field. What Mr. Parker has done is preserve a life, career and very important lesson in life in his book.

Professor Baseball returns for a second season at Miller Park
    Play ball!
by Brad Stratton Imelda Marcos and Hack Wilson, Sikorsky helicopters and curve balls, American yarn vs. Australian yarn. All of these were part of the rookie season for UWMÕs Professor Baseball at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The professor is preparing for a second season, which starts April 5 with a match-up between the Brewers and World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. Once each game, the animated Professor Baseball appears on the giant scoreboards high above center field in Miller Park to ask a baseball-related question or offer a little-known fact that relates to the game. Each item is linked to a school, department, or program at the university. An archive of all questions and comments delivered during the 2001 season can be found at the professorÕs Web site The between-innings scoreboard feature is just one part of UWMÕs marketing relationship with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club. Other parts of the agreement include:
    • A 3-by-72-foot black-and-gold sign on the back wall of the visitorsÕ bullpen just beyond the fieldÕs right-center-field wall. It is not only visible from most of Miller ParkÕs 42,000 seats, but it also is frequently seen on television when home runs are hit at or near it. Several small dents in the sign show it has been a popular target for batters.

"It all depends on how the rest of the team is playing." I hear it over and over again. Plus, there are plenty of statheads who are trying to account for every run scored in the history of baseball, and decide who was responsible for every base that every baserunner advanced in the process of scoring all the runs. Most people's eyes glaze over at the very thought. Hell, I'm sure somebody's eyes are glazing over as they read this. Nevertheless, my objective here is to give the fan a clue about what's good and useful, using stats that are readily available without the use of a Cray supercomputer. Sometimes you need a Cray. Sometimes, like when you're crunching baseball numbers, you don't.
