Baseball Hall of Fame
The Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1936, the first ball players selected: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Not a bad group.. The first players inducted when the hall opened in Cooperstown, NY, in 1939. They were Grover Cleveland Alexander, Eddie Collins, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Napoleon Lajoie, Cy Young, George Sisler, and Tris Speaker The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was officially dedicated on June 12, 1939. The game's four ranking executives of the period—Landis, Frick, Harridge and William G. Bramham, President of the National Association, participated in the ribbon-cutting. Of the 25 players who had been elected to the Hall of Fame up to that point, 11 were still living. Between the original dedication in 1939 and the completion of the National Baseball Library expansion, several significant developments had taken place. New wings were opened on July 24, 1950 and on May 10, 1980; and the Hall of Fame Gallery was dedicated on August 4, 1958. The National Baseball Library opened its doors on July 22, 1968 and the Fetzer-Yawkey Building was dedicated on June 10, 1989. An $8 million Library expansion was completed in 1994, linking the library facility to the Hall of Fame Gallery and incorporating exciting new exhibits on the media and on baseball movies

Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson
In Chicago, the line “Hack Wilson is a low-ball hitter and highball drinker” used to get a lot of laughs. Later, when Lewis Robert "Hack" Wilson died young and penniless, it didn't seem so funny. Strictly speaking, it wasn't true. Wilson liked high fastballs, and when he was on his game he could knock any pitch into orbit. And when he was out on the town, he never confined himself to highballs.
In a sense, his career mirrored America of the 1920s and 1930s. Wilson rollicked through the 1920s with a carefree, live-for-today attitude, but when the bleak tomorrow arrived in the 1930s, he suffered. One day Cubs Manager Joe McCarthy tried to teach Wilson a lesson. "If I drop a worm in a glass of water, it swims around," he told Wilson. "If I drop it in a glass of whiskey, the worm dies. What does that prove?"
"If you drink whiskey, you'll never get worms," Wilson responded.
Physically, he was a sight to behold, a combination of Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wilson stood only 5-foot-6 but weighed at least 190 pounds. He had massive shoulders, a barrel-shaped chest, and a protruding stomach, and his neck measured 18 inches around. His short arms were larger than some guys' legs, and his short legs had a greater girth than most waists. Supporting all this bulk was a delicate pair of size-6 feet.

Today was my day off, so I woke up with the intention to write. Then I literally tripped over something I had forgotten about, my copy of I had bought it a couple of weeks ago and hadn’t had a chance to watch it yet. So I sat down and did that first. If you haven’t seen it yet, go out and get it, or at least rent it. It’s worth the time. But that’s not what this is about. Instead, watching got me thinking about records. And it made me realize something. It made me realize that we, as baseball fans, talk an awful lot about 60, or 61, or 70 or 73 home runs. And after thinking about it, I realized that we talk an awful lot about batting averages too, and there’s probably not a baseball fan out there who doesn’t know about Ted Williams’ .400 season, even if it was decades before they were born. So we’ve covered two of the three triple crown categories, and since I brought up the Triple Crown, I’m going to draw a parallel to horse racing. Because if home runs are like the Kentucky Derby, and a .400 batting average is like the Belmont Stakes, then RBI, and the chase of the RBI record, get about as much attention as the Vanity Handicap. I’d bet the average baseball fan out there would have about the same chance of guessing that Azeri won the Vanity on Saturday as they would of remembering that Lance Berkman led the NL in RBI last season.
