IN THE 125-YEAR HISTORY OF MAJOR LEAGUE baseball, nobody has ever hit five home runs in a game, pitched three no-hitters in a season, or won more than two Triple Crowns. Winning the baseball trifecta is tough enough to win once: the last man to win it was Carl Yastrzemski of the 1967 Boston Red Sox, while the last National League winner was Joe Medwick of the 1937 St. Louis Cardinals. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine never found such a vast black hole. The top three home run hitters of baseball historyHank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Willie Mayshad Triple Crown potential that never materialized. Aaron and Ruth both won batting and RBI titles to go with their multiple home run crowns but never put together all three legs in one year. And Mays, amazingly enough, never led the National League in runs batted in.

A PICTURE-PERFECT SWING DEVELOPED through endless hours of practice made Ted Williams one of the greatest hitters who ever lived. At the same time, a less-than-ideal attitude developed during numerous years of butting heads with fans and sportswriters made him a royal pain in the you-know-where. There never seemed to be any gray area with Ted Williams. Either you adored him, or you disliked him. As the baseball world remembers the last major league player to hit .400he batted .406 in 1941both sides of the man emerge loud and clear. He could turn on the charm for a youngster or teammate and be a hero and friend for life. And he could just as easily ignore his Boston Red Sox fans wanting a tip of the cap, or a sportswriter wanting an interview, and become viewed as a non-appreciative jerk. "I was a teammate of his for seven years and he was the most humble and nice guy I ever met," former Red Sox pitcher Mickey McDermott said. "For whatever reason, I had a good rapport with him, better than most. He lived in a tunnel, so to speak, and didn't let many people in."

T ed Williams: A Baseball Life is a biography of the famous Red Sox hitter. It traces his life from growing up in California and playing for the San Diego Padres to being traded to the Boston Red Sox,where he spent the rest of his career.
The book covers the outstanding year when he hit .406, as well as when he went off to World War II, and includes a lot of detail, maybe even too much. It can be hard to take in all the information and can even be boring at times, since it goes on and on about how Ted adjusted to different pitchers. There's nothing about his life after baseball; the narrative just ends when he retires. I'd give this book two out of four stars.
I do recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball, and wants to learn about Williams' career, but it's hard to get a sense of Williams' life beyond the statistics.

The magazine's report, appearing in the issue that hits newsstands Wednesday, is based on internal documents, e-mails, photographs and tape recordings supplied by a former employee of Alcor Life Extension Foundation. After Williams died July 5, 2002, his body was taken by private jet to the company in Scottsdale, Ariz. Piazza said he will comply with a request by the lawyer representing Williams' estate to not interfere in the family controversy, The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., reported in yesterday's editions. Piazza had contacted Williams' daughter, Bobby Jo Ferrell, offering his help in removing the baseball legend's body from the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona. "Personally, my feelings haven't changed, but the last thing I want to do is interfere in a family matter," Piazza said. "I just feel strongly that he [Williams] should be memorialized properly in some way." Earlier in the week, the executor of Ted Williams' estate sued Ferrell and her husband, alleging they violated an agreement by repeatedly voicing their opposition to the freezing of Williams' body. ROUNDUP Montreal Expos second baseman Jose Vidro agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2008, the team said.

The World of William Burroughs If this book failed in being an intellectual biography, it certainly succeeded in portraying the world of William Burroughs in an interesting fashion. Burroughs life seems for the most part
a series of tragedies. It appears as though he was molested as a youth and one is tempted - perhaps due to the saturation of "pop psychology" in our day- to conclude that somehow his future misfortunes (and brilliance) were rooted in that event. Subsequently driven from the United States, then Mexico (where he committed the infamous "William Tell" fatal shooing of his wife) he spends the greater part of his life wandering between Tangiers, Paris, London and New York. Oddly enough, he only seems to find some kind ofhappiness at the end of his life in Lawrence, Kansas. His meeting with the other members of the "Beat Movement", Allen Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac, Gregory Corso, seemed fated, and unlike the others he did not become a "Beat Stereotype but remained authentically himself, behaving in many ways like a conservative midwesterner. Perhaps this authenticity is what appealed to his groupies who could not manage to retain their own identity separate from the various trends in which they participated.

Ted Williams' daughter gains legal breakthrough
The Associated Press It's not too late to get into a Fantasy Sports League. Sign up here. PHOENIX (AP) - The daughter of baseball great Ted Williams could be a step closer to getting her father's remains removed from a Scottsdale cryonics lab. Attorneys working on Barbara Joyce Ferrell's behalf have found a 1994 California appellate court ruling with similarities to the Williams case. The court ordered the Alcor Life Extension Foundation to give up a California woman's cryogenically frozen body four years after her death. Ferrell, who has a civil suit pending in Maricopa County Superior Court, is trying to force Alcor to give up her father's severed head and torso.

TED WILLIAMS - 1966
HALL OF FAME INDUCTANCE SPEECH:
"I guess every player thinks about going into the Hall of Fame. Now that the moment has come for me I find it difficult to say what is really in my heart. But I know it is the greatest thrill of my life. I received two hundred and eighty-odd votes from the writers. I know I didn't have two hundred and eighty-odd friends among the writers. I know they voted for me because they felt in their minds and in their hearts that I rated it, and I want to say to them: Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Today I am thinking about a lot of things. I am thinking about my playground director in San Diego, Rodney Luscomb, my high school coach, Wos Caldwell, and my managers, who had so much patience with mefellows like Frank Shellenback, Donie Bush, Joe Cronin, and Joe McCarthy. I am thinking of Eddie Collins, who had so much faith in meand to be in the Hall with him particularly, as well as those other great players, is a great honor. I'm sorry Eddie isn't here today. I'm thinking of Tom Yawkey. I have always said it: Tom Yawkey is the greatest owner in baseball. I was lucky to have played on the club he owned, and I'm grateful to him for being here today.
