To learn more about the resources of the San Diego Public Library, home of the San Diego SABR Baseball Research Center, see the Library's Web site. The Library has also created two guides to the baseball collections: a shorter pathfinder ( view HTML view PDF ) to get people started with their research, and a longer English-Spanish guide ( view HTML view PDF) To view PDF files, Acrobat® Reader® is required. In Fall 1997 members of the San Diego Ted Williams SABR Chapter, recognizing the importance of baseball research, decided to create a project that would result in a significant resource for those interested in such efforts in San Diego. As a result, in 1998 the San Diego Ted Williams Chapter initiated a partnership with the Central Library of the San Diego Public Library.

S an Diego native Ted Williams tall, skinny and gangly joined the Boston Red Sox in 1939 following two seasons in the minor leagues. He came to a club that was already the best hitting team in baseball, but it was also a squad that lacked power. Williams got off to a bad start in the spring of ’39 as he was late in reporting to spring training in Florida. But by the time he left camp, he was leading the Red Sox in nearly every hitting category. He finished his rookie year with a .327 average. He also hit 31 home runs and knocked in 145 RBIs. The Kid, it seemed, was on his way to greatness. The 1939 season was also the start of something more ignominious: a long-running feud with the Boston media. enter site

There is a very rare card in this set, it is #68. What happened here is that Fleer put out the card, but Bucky Harris was under contract with Topps. Hence, Fleer had to halt production of this card. Williams was 83. Williams was an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966, and was famous as a player for sharp vision and fast wrists, which enabled him to be the last player to bat .400. Eleanor Diamond, a spokeswoman for Ted Williams Enterprises based in Hernando, Florida, said Williams died on Friday morning but had no further information.

Williams poses with other outstanding athletes who are training personnel at stations in the Pensacola area on August 1, 1944.
Williams then attended gunnery training at Jacksonville where he once again set gunnery records. He then returned to Pensacola where he served as an instructor at Bronson Field. He played baseball for the base team, the Bronson Bombers, which won the Training Command championship that year. Due to an excess of cadets, instructors were mandated to washout one third of their students. Williams refused to washout good students for the sake of statistics and was called on the carpet for it. He stood his ground and replied: "If I think a kid is going to make a competent flyer, I won't wash him." From June to August 1945, Williams went through the Corsair Operational Training Unit at Jacksonville. He was in Hawaii awaiting orders as a replacement pilot when the war ended. Williams returned to the States in December and was discharged from the Marines on January 28, 1946.

Williams returned to the Red Sox in 1946 and took up where he had left off, leading the team to the World Series, and winning the MVP crown. In 1947 and 1948, he won the American League batting championship and was the MVP again in 1949. On May 2, 1952, Williams was recalled to active duty due to the Korean War. He was now 33 years old, married with a child, and had not flown in eight years. He resented being recalled and said so years later. Williams was not alone in his unhappiness - many other WW II veterans recalled for the Korean War had similar feelings. These veterans felt they had done their share in World War II and it was someone else's job to fight this war. Especially after they were well established in their careers and had families. Additional resentment was felt because the Navy and the Marines recalled members of the inactive reserves instead of active reserves. Mitchner referred to this situation in his work

Soldier, baseball players honored at Ted Williams Museum
New members were inducted into the Hitters Hall of Fame and a Citrus County soldier was also acknowledged.
By KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer Published February 16, 2004 CITRUS HILLS - Like previous Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, Sunday's 11th annual event drew many well-known baseball players. But what made this edition unique was its distinct local flavor. Two county men were among those honored. One, Monte Irvin, for his exploits on the diamond. The other, Citrus High School graduate Aaron Weaver, for his on the battlefield. Weaver died when the military helicopter in which he was riding crashed last month in Iraq. "I've waited a long time to receive this award," Irvin, 84, told the estimated crowd of 1,000. "I'm very delighted."

Obituary
Son of baseball star Ted Williams dies at 35
John-Henry Williams drew more notice in the battle over his father's remains than he had as a minor league ballplayer.
By ADRIENNE P. SAMUELS, Times Staff Writer Published March 8, 2004 [Times photo (2002) ] A note was offered by John-Henry Williams as proof that he, his father and his sister had agreed to be cryogenically preserved. John-Henry Williams died Saturday of leukemia. John-Henry Williams, who achieved a peculiar prominence through a bitter family feud over freezing the remains of his famous father, baseball great Ted Williams, died Saturday (March 6, 2004) at 35 of leukemia. The fame of the father eluded the younger Williams, who played minor league baseball, but displayed little of the prowess of the "Splendid Splinter."

Ted Williams Baseball's Greatest Hitter
By Ann Burch
SeniorWorld Online Correspondent
"..All I want out of life is that, when I walk down the street, folks will say, "There goes the greatest hitter who ever lived." Ted Williams was born in San Diego, Calif., on Aug. 30, 1918, and became a legend in his own time. Batting left-handed and throwing right-handed, Williams, to his fans, is "Mr. Baseball." Known by numerous nicknames, those who admire the man and his sport, consider him to be what the game is all about. Appropriately, he began his baseball career in his hometown, signed on at 17 by the San Diego Padres, and playing in the Pacific Coast League. He then moved onto the American Association at Minneapolis. A cocky manner and disinterest in playing the outfield in spring training, 1938, led to his being farmed out to the minors. Frustrated, Williams is said to have retorted "Tell them I'm going to make more money in this game than all three of them put together." He was right on target. He arrived in the majors for good in 1939, breaking in with a double against the Yankees. He ended that season batting .327 average, with 31 homers, and a league-leading145 RBI, the first rookie RBI leader.

On Being A Baseball Fan Reviews of Baseball Books On Playing The Game TRAVELING THE BAMBINO ROAD with Cecilia Tan Day Seven: March 12, 2003 I've been wanting to visit the Ted Williams Museum for years. In 2000, when I came to Spring Training for the first time, I had heard about the museum, but didn't quite figure out where it was. On that trip, we didn't have time, having packed our trip with games in Winter Haven and Dunedin and Sarasota. The next year we went further afield, adding a trip to see the Braves at Disney's Wide World of Sports (and also ride the roller coasters at Universal Studios), but again there was no time to visit the museum. Last year the trip itself was too short for anything for this baseball starved family but games, games, games. But my interest in Ted Williams had grown with every passing year. When I moved to New England in the 1980s, I knew almost nothing of Red Sox history except that they had sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees and hadn't won a World Series since 1918. In the mid-90s, when they announced they were building the Ted Williams Tunnel, I had to ask... who? It was like I had never even heard the name, which maybe I hadn't. If you asked me to name the greatest ballplayers of all time I could have given you a long list, but it's probably no coincidence that they were all Yankees: Ruth, Mantle, Berra, Dimaggio... that was before I knew that Dimaggio had Major League brothers. I could have put a few non-Yankees on the list: Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, but as afterthoughts. As in "I hear these other guys were pretty good, too."
