TED WILLIAMS
No one cared more about hitting than Ted Williams, and few ever did it better. In a career interrupted twice by war, Williams still managed to post incredible numbers. He was the last man to bat over .400, in 1941. He hit for power, average, and had a remarkable eye at the plate. He was the first man for whom opposing teams consistently attempted to come up with defensive schemes to stop him.

Boston Red Sox (1939-1942, 1946-1960)
Managed
Washington Senators (1969-1971), Texas Rangers (1972) It's common knowledge that most great players fail to make great managers. With a few exceptions, this is true. Williams skippered the Senators from 1969 to 1971, following them to Texas for the '72 season. Thus, he was the first manager in Ranger history. He guided the Senators to a winning mark and a 4th place finish in 1969 (largely due to Frank Howard's slugging), but the team gradually faded over his last three years. He finished his managerial career with a .429 career mark (273-364). Like Rogers Hornsby, Williams failed to communicate well with his players, especially the pitchers, whom he dislkied. Post-Season 1946 World Series World Champion?

Walking with Ted Williams
By Phil Brooks, July 8, 2002
On the first pilgrimage to spring training my father and I made, I brought a magazine to Winter Haven with a great photograph of Ted Williams in it. I hoped to have it signed as we’d heard Williams lived in Florida and often made the trip to Winter Haven to see old friends and talk baseball. I carried the magazine for days and never saw Williams.
Then, right before the start of one day’s exhibition game, Ted Williams, age 64, in full Red Sox uniform stepped out of the dugout and strolled up the first base line to light applause. He nodded. There were maybe three-hundred people in the park and on impulse I jumped the wall and headed towards Williams. I was a teenager at the time.
"Mr. Williams!" I said.
A guard yelled at me and Ted held up a hand, "It’s okay, buddy," he told the guy.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Theodore Samuel "Ted" Williams August 30 July 5 ), aka The Splendid Splinter Teddy Ballgame or simply The Kid , was a Baseball Hall of Famer who spent 19 seasons, interrupted by military service, with the Boston Red Sox . Williams was a two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner who also won the Triple Crown twice and had a lifetime total of 521 home runs. He was also an avid fisherman who maintained, for some period, a television show about fishing. He was also inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame Williams was born in San Diego, California as Teddy Samuel Williams in honor of Teddy Roosevelt (he later changed his name to Theodore) and is hailed as one of the finest hitters to have ever played the game. His two MVP Awards and two Triple Crowns came in different years. He is one of only two players (the other being Rogers Hornsby ) to have won the Triple Crown twice. In , he came to the last day of the season with a batting average of .3996, which would be rounded up to .400 and thus make Williams the first man to hit .400 since Bill Terry in . Although his manager left the decision to him, Williams opted to play in both games of a doubleheader and risk losing his record. He got 6 hits in 8 at bats, raising his season average to .406. No one has hit .400 since.
