... chapter to go Perfect I'm Not Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches, and Baseball
by David Wells and Chris Kreski
Forget the perfect game. Forget the World Series rings. Forget the legendary carousing, the barroom brawling, the heavy-metal head-banging, and the endless supply of uncensored, often havoc-wreaking quotes. Forget the feuds with dumb-assed fans, wrong-headed managers and the entire city of Cleveland. Even if Perfect, I'm Not From rookie ball amid the beer-soaked, frozen tundra of the Great White North, through Winter Ball amid the easy women and explosive diarrhea of Venezuela, Perfect I'm Not explores Boomer's long, strange, often insane climb through the minors. And from the Siberia of the Blue Jays' bullpen, through intensive training with a brilliant little Yoda known as Sparky Anderson, the book also examines how Boomer grew from a mediocre reliever, into a solid, reliable, hugely successful starter. From there, after tortured dealings with Marge Schott in Cincinatti, and Pat Gillick in Baltimore, the book follows Boomer deep inside the New York Yankees' dugout, right through the teams' fairy-tale seasons of '97 and '98. It stands with David on the mound through his legendary perfect game. It documents his high-profile love affair with the night-life of New York City, and then explores just how devastating it felt to be unceremoniously dumped for Roger Clemens.

by Michael Walls David Wells is a big dumb idiot. Okay? There – I said it. Somebody had to say it. I know this is exactly what every Yankee fan has been thinking since Wells' "tell all" book hit the media, causing a massive flurry of bad press. Even if you haven't read the book (which I haven't, and won't) you can sense that this is just the move of a big dumb idiot.
I'm a Yankee fan. And I use to be a David Wells fan. I mean, what wasn't there to like about David Wells. He's a self-proclaimed Yankee fan, especially of Babe Ruth. He represents the exact opposite of the stereotypical ball player, thus giving ordinary joes the warm fuzzy feeling that if Wells can make it, maybe anyone can. He's a big, burly, teddy bear that likes beer, bikes and heavy metal music. He's always got a big, shit-eating grin on his face, and never takes himself seriously.
Like Wells' perfect game. One of the highlights of my personal Yankees memories. I saw the game live. It was the most amazing moment I'd ever seen. I was jumping around my living room, by myself, as the entire stadium and Yankee team was doing the same. I will never forget that game.

David Wells
David Lee Wells (born May 20 ) is a Major League Baseball player who has been one of the game's top left-handed pitchers for the past several years. Nicknamed "Boomer" for his portly physique (6-3, listed at 240 pounds but thought to be more) and off-field interests such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Wells was a journeyman starter for the first eight seasons of his career. He debuted for the Toronto Blue Jays in as a reliever and did not secure a job as a full-time starter until he was 30 years old, despite pitching well most of the time. He emerged as a top-flight pitcher in , when he was 32. After starting the year at 10-3 for the last-place

Home About CMC Admission Academics ... Giving to CMC A Hero Remembered Longtime CMS coach David Wells is eulogized for his heroism, and for his commitment to sports and family By Alissa Sandford These and other memories of the former athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, were shared with family, friends, and members of the community on Saturday, July 14 at memorial services for Wells, 50, who died earlier this month in Mesa, Ariz. He is survived by his wife, Jodie Burton (head women's basketball coach for CMS); three sons, John, Todd, and Michael; his father and stepmother, John F. and Lois Wells of Sonoma, Calif.; and hundreds of student athletes who competed with, for, and against Wells during his 32 years with CMS athletics. "And maybe (that loss) was fitting because David had lost his own battle while he was with us," Edwards said of Wells' six-year battle with cancer. Guest musician George Allan, on bagpipe, led family and friends in a recessional to the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, where reception guests reminisced and enjoyed David Wells' favorite Motown hits. After his tracheotomy, Wells wrote on a yellow notepad, as his trademark voice failed. Tim Wells recounted how once during a cancer support group meeting, David had asked a member to read something he had written. It said: "I just had one of the most wonderful moments of my life, standing on the ladder and cutting down the net with my wife."

by Don Malcolm on February 27, 1999 last updated January 25, 2000 Send us feedback on this article Myles McDonnel writes regarding QMAX and the Clemens/Wells Deal: Liked the piece until I saw the end, where you suggested what Gord Ash should have held out for. Clemens and Fletcher for Wells, Posada and Bradley? Are you nuts? There's simply no way the Yanks make that deal, in February, March, or ever. Posada is one of the "almost- untouchable" players on the team (admittedly, with Steinbrenner, no one's completely untouchable); he's an AL catcher who can hit with power and is still getting better every year. Getting Fletcher back for him would be pointless; you might as well just give Posada away. And Bradley is currently considered the prize pitching prospect in the Yanks' system (unless you count the recently acquired Ed Yarnall).
This ain't the '80s no more, and even given Steinbrenner's greed and dopiness, the Yanks don't make trades like that anymore. They didn't NEED to make a deal for Clemens, and the deal happened because Ash made an offer that was too good to refuse. Essentially, Cashman (and Steinbrenner) pulled the trigger because they were able to get Clemens without losing much in the way of their future. If their future had been part of the dealas any deal including Posada and Bradley for veterans would have to be consideredthey would most certainly not have made it. Might as well say Ash should have asked for Wells, Jeter and Mariano Rivera. If your proposed deal had been the final word from Ash, Clemens would still be in Toronto (which, I agree, might have been better for Toronto...).
