system really is. Under the CDT system, honus wagner emerges as the 10 best defensive shortstop in baseball history for his career.
http://baseballguru.com/articles/analysismikehoban02.html
Can ARod Catch Honus? Adapted from (Baseball Concepts:2003) By Michael Hoban, Ph.D. A new book has reinforced the belief that HonusWagner is the greatest all-around shortstop (hitting and fielding) who ever played the game of baseball at the major league level (Cal Ripken Jr. is a distant second). Wagner played from 1897 to 1917 primarily for the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the 20 th century, he was by far the best hitting shortstop of all time. He won the batting title in the National League eight times during his career and he is #13 among the best hitters of all time. And he is also #10 in fielding among those players who have played shortstop in the major leagues for an extended period of time (he played 1887 games at the position). These facts (among many others) are established in by Michael Hoban, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics and a serious baseball researcher. Dr. Hoban is a member of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) and the author of (McFarland: 2000(. Add to that the fact that Honus had his best hitting season at the age of 34 in 1908 and his best defensive season at the age of 38 in 1912 and you realize what a special talent he was.

NEWS BIOGRAPHY FAST FACTS ... BUSINESS BIOGRAPHY Honus Wagner is considered by many to be baseball's greatest all-around player. The Pittsburgh Pirates' shortstop was a sensational hitter, a brilliant base-runner and a flawless fielder. He broke into the majors by hitting .344 in 1897 and put together 17 consecutive .300 seasons. He was the NL batting champion for seven of those 17 seasons with a lifetime average of .329.
One of the first five players inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame, he led the league in stolen bases on six occasions, finishing his career with a total of 722 steals. Wagner retired with more hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples, games and steals than any other National League player.
After his career as a player, Honus became a manager for his longtime team, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Honus Wagner baseball card, one of the most valuable in existence today, was recalled in 1909. At the time, the cards were distributed along with tobacco; Wagner, a nonsmoker, objected to being included in the promotion because he did not want to set a bad example for children.

This is no ordinary baseball card. It's too regal for a shoebox, too elegant for an attic. It's too old to do much but sit and rest, encased in Lucite and the dreams of others. Sticking this baseball card in your bicycle spokes would be like using the Hope diamond to carve a turkey.

Easy-going Honus was a Pirates icon
By Bob Diskin
Special to ESPN.com
Game 2 of the 1909 World Series between the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates: The man who would lead the majors in hits over the next decade took his lead off first base. He glanced toward the shortstop, who had been the hit leader for the decade just ended. The shortstop, as easy-going as his opponent was hard-boiled, expected the runner to try to steal second base. He readied his hulking body for the inevitable collision. The runner raced for second, but the catcher's throw was on target. The shortstop slapped the tag hard on the sliding baserunner's face. A trickle of blood dripped as the umpire called him out. Thus ended the first skirmish in the war that was the only meeting between Detroit's Ty Cobb and Pittsburgh's Honus Wagner. The Flying Dutchman batted .333 with six runs batted in and six steals in leading the Pirates to the Series title in seven games. In his 21-year career, Wagner won eight batting titles, a National League record he shares with the San Diego Padres' Tony Gwynn. He batted above .300 for 17 consecutive seasons including seven times hitting at least .350 and finished with a .329 lifetime average.

Honus Wagner: A Biography
Last Updated 5 December 1999 Here's my review:
Honus Wagner: A Biography
Some of the details in the book give the reader a vivid description of Honus Wagner: Physical appearance
"His legs were so bowed he couldn't catch a pig in an alley" (p 4).
"Broad shoulders, long arms, huge hands, and those soon to be famous bowed legs." (p 14) Some baseball men were put off by Honus' appearance; they expected him to be slow or clumsy. One executive wouldn't "pay a dime" for a young Wagner, and another wouldn't pay his train fare for a tryout. (p 40)
Manager Fred Clarke said when Louisville first obtained Honus, "He is a big, heavy German, with very large hands, and is powerful as a bull. He kills the ball..." (p 45)
"...a one story brick house."
His "uniform was filthy, stained with a mixture of mud, blood, and tobacco Juice." (p 59)
In Louisville, he was called the mayor of the bleachers and the idol of rooter's row." (p 66)
Off the field, a likeable, easygoing fellow, while on the field, he is a fleet footed, base stealing hustler who was willing to play anywhere. (p 121) Playing ability
Wagner played every postion but catcher. Despite what position he might have settled on, Honus could have been a Hall of Famer at any position. He is without a doubt, the greatest shortstop to play the game. With respect to modern day heros like Cal Ripken, any all-time team that includes any name but "Wagner" at shortstop must be considered a suspect line-up.
