1. Excellent storyteller (rate: 5)
I literally could not put this book down from start to finish. Whether you like baseball, dislike the Yankees, or just enjoy rooting for the one guy who could have saved baseball from the financial and legal disasters of the past 50 years, this book will be one of the best you have ever read.
2. They do not make sports bios Like THIS anymore....... (rate: 5)
The two things you need to know before you buy "Veeck As In Wreck" and you will buy this book, you must, if you've ever bought any professional sports bio before are the names Veeck and Linn.
Bill Veeck you know from reputation the wacky promoter who invented everything from Ladies' Day to Disco Demolition Night. The man owned several baseball franchises (including the Chicago White Sox twice, for some reason), and was known as a both a promotional genius and a shrewd financier.

populist owners. He inherited his love of the
game from his father, a sportswriter who became
president of the Chicago Cubs. As a teenager, he
planted the ivy in Wrigley Field. Twice owner of the Chicago White Sox, as well as
the Cleveland Indians, the St. Louis Browns, and
the minor league Milwaukee Brewers, Bill Veeck
believed that any team that relied solely on
baseball purists for its patronage would "go out of
business by Mother's Day." With this in mind, Veeck became the “Fan’s Owner.” He created the exploding scoreboard at Comiskey Park, let fans manage his teams, put a shower in the bleachers, started "Bat Day," and gave away 10,000 cupcakes to a single fan. Veeck integrated the American League in 1947, signing Larry Doby and later Satchel Paige to complete the Cleveland team that would win the 1948 World Series. His White Sox won their first pennant in 40 years in 1959. A voracious reader, he wrote three bestsellers, starting in 1962 with his autobiography, Veeck as in Wreck. Veeck was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He and his wife, Mary Frances, lived here at 1380 East Madison Park.

Ebbets to Veeck to Busch: Eight Owners Who Shaped Baseball - Book Review, by Benita W. Boxerman, Burton Alan Boxerman From the Publisher
Eight owners - Charles Ebbets, Barney Dreyfuss, Helene Britton, Clark Griffith, Walter O'Malley, Bill Veeck, Charles Finley and August Busch - are the focus of this book, not only because of their larger contributions but also because they were hands-on owners who ran their teams decisively. Helene Britton proved that a woman could successfully run a ball club even if she couldn't vote; Bill Veeck hired the first black player in the American League, introduced exploding scoreboards and was the first to put his players' names on the backs of their uniforms; Walter O'Malley relocated his Dodgers to the West Coast and convinced the Giants to do so too. EPITAPH FOR A HUSTLER
Bill Veeck and Ed Linn excerpted from The Hustler's Handbook , G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1965, pp. 340-44 Hustlers and corporations have always been so hostile that personnel managers break out into a heavy sweat at the sight of you. Hustlers, I do not have to tell you, make dreadful employees. They tend to have ideas of their own, a practice which is frowned upon, and they have this nasty habit of moving in on the command post, fomenting insurrections and seizing the president's chair for themselves. But the corporation is wary of even the most benign of you. Corporate people don't have to be identical, they just have to be interchangeable. Corporations want tractable personnel who will fit neatly into their assigned slots whether the slots be in Rochester, New York; Rochester, Minnesota; or Rochester, Manitoba. Unsatisfactory as he may be as an employee, a hustler makes an even more unsatisfactory employer. In order to be effective, the hustler has to have full, freewheeling control. Once he feels the hot breath of the Board of Directors wafting over his shoulder he tends to turn sulky and fractious and bolt to the outside of the track.

This book had an awesome message behind it. What a lot of people arent doing these days is going for their dreams and what a lot of people are doing is giving up. Reading between the lines
An all-star lineup of baseball books
By Todd Leopold CNN "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America," French historian Jacques Barzun once famously wrote, "had better learn baseball." Fortunately, for those who want to know America's heart and mind, there are hundreds of books offering lessons on the sport. Whether it's baseball's mathematical precision, the larger-than-life exploits of its players, or simply the crazy luck created by hitting a pitched horsehide-leather sphere, baseball has provided writers with a rich vein of stories and personalities. With the sport's All-Star break at hand, here are nine idiosyncratic choices for a literary all-star team. (CNN) Bill James has something interesting to say on just about anything baseball. Here are a few of his choice thoughts. CONTRACTION: "I'm appalled. College basketball has 320 Division I programs, all of which appear to make enough money ... and I haven't heard anyone say there are too many teams. The weaker teams can compete because the structure works. In baseball, the structure doesn't work. ... Shooting the weaker teams doesn't solve anything." (interview) CRAIG BIGGIO: "Craig Biggio is the best player in major league baseball today. If you compare Craig Biggio very carefully to Ken Griffey Jr. in almost any season, you will find that Biggio has contributed more to his team than Griffey has. ... (A)part from home runs, (Biggio) did everything better than Griffey (in 1998)." (New Baseball Abstract) MORE STORIES Bill James: Baseball not just by the numbers DIZZY DEAN: "(Jimmie) Wilson was the Cardinals catcher when Dizzy Dean came up. He tried to take Dean under his wing, which was kind of like trying to keep a rhinoceros in your bathroom; Dizzy Dean would make Nuke LaLoosh look like a Republican senator." (New Baseball Abstract)
