An excerpt from
The Autobiography of Bill Veeck, with Ed Linn
In 1951, in a moment of madness, I became owner and operator of a collection of old rags and tags known to baseball historians as the St. Louis Browns. The Browns, according to reputable anthropologists, rank in the annals of baseball a step or two ahead of Cro-Magnon man. One thing should be made clear. A typical Brownie was more than four feet tall. Except, of course, for Eddie Gaedel, who was 3'7" and weighed 65 lbs. Eddie gave the Browns their only distinction. He was, by golly, the best darn midget who ever played big-league ball. He was also the only one. Eddie came to us in a moment of desperation. Not his desperation, ours. After a month or so in St. Louis, we were looking around desperately for a way to draw a few people into the ball park, it being perfectly clear by that time that the ball club wasn't going to do it unaided. The best bet seemed to be to call upon the resources of our radio sponsors, Falstaff Brewery. For although Falstaff only broadcast our games locally, they had distributors and dealers all over the state. Naturally, they pressed me for details. Naturally, I had to tell them that much as I hated to hold out on them, my idea was so explosive I could not afford to take the slightest chance of a leak.

The best bet seemed to be to call upon the resources of our radio sponsors, Falstaff Brewery. For although Falstaff only broadcast our games locally, they had distributors and dealers all over the state. It happened that 1951 was the Fiftieth Anniversary of the American League , an event the league was exploiting with its usual burst of inspiration by sewing special emblems on the uniforms of all the players. It seemed to me that a birthday party was clearly called for. It seemed to me, further, that if I could throw a party to celebrate the birthdays of both the

ill Veeck was a great innovator on the public side of the game. Veeck, who planted the ivy in Wrigley Field while his father was president of the Cubs, saw baseball as entertainment, and his clubs always had a carnival element. (Veeck tried to buy the Ringling Brothers Circus in the 1950s.) He was a kindly huckster, not unlike the Wizard of Oz. When he staged morning games during World War II for workers coming off the graveyard shift, Veeck helped serve coffee and doughnuts in the stands. He let fans decide strategy with voting cards. But Veeck wanted to win, too. He rigged fences so that they could be moved in and out to his team's advantage. His grounds crew would hose down the infield until it was muddy to slow down opposing baserunners. He sold mirrors to fans in the bleachers to shine in enemy batters' eyes. But Veeck's most famous coup was hiring Eddie Gaedel to play for the St. Louis Browns in 1951. Eddie Gaedel Veeck's stunt came in the second game of a doubleheader between the Browns and Tigers on August 19. Between games Veeck staged an elaborate 50th-anniversary celebration for the American League, attended by Commissioner "Happy" Chandler. The celebration featured acrobats, antique cars, a band made up of Browns players, and for the finale, an anniversary cake. The 3-foot-7 Gaedel jumped out of the cake, wearing number 1/8 on a Browns uniform originally made for the son of former owner Bill DeWitt.

Bill Veeck Trophy In 1952, the St. Louis Browns were managed by Rogers Hornsby. While Hornsby was one of baseball's greatest players, he was not very well liked as a manager. In the mid-summer of 1952, the Browns players got together and asked the team owner, Bill Veeck, to fire Hornsby. Veeck, a real players' owner, went ahead and relieved the very tough disciplinarian, Hornsby. In appreciation, the Browns players gave Veeck this trophy. The inscription reads: "To Bill Veeck - For the greatest play since the emancipation proclamation. June 10, 1952. From the players of the St. Louis Browns"

G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1962 "I have always believed that a fan's knowledge of the game was inversely proportional to the price of his ticket." - Bill Veeck Move over Charles Finley. Step aside George Steinbrenner. Walter O'Malley? Forget about it. Of all the colorful, controversial, or so-called visionary men who have owned baseball clubs through the years, none can compare to the late, great Bill Veeck. From his zany promotions designed to put fannies in the seats, to his irreverence towards the game's power brokers, to his wide appeal as the most populist owner ever, Veeck re-defined, in his time, what it meant to be a major league baseball team owner. Indeed, he was truly a man ahead of his time. Bill Veeck's life and times are covered in detail in his extraordinary autobiography, VeeckAs in Wreck , co-written with Ed Linn. To understand this man named Veeck, one need only look to the term that Veeck used to describe himself (and others) who sat in the owners' seats around the league. Veeck proudly referred to himself as "an operator." He knew that baseball was serious business but, more importantly, he recognized that it was ultimately entertainment for the masses, like the circus, and many of the decisions he made were driven by the theory that providing good (and fairly priced) entertainment is a civic responsibility. As a baseball "operator", Veeck did make tough business decisions to survive, but he never lost sight of the fact that baseball existed primarily for the fans.

He writes about baseball in just the way you'd imagine a longtime fiction editor who is also a baseball nut would do. His words flow across the page like poetry. Angell is especially fascinated with the individual personalities of baseballhis best work comes when he is focusing on one player, manager or fan in particular. Angell excells at noticing the little details that make baseball different from other games. The Summer Game was Angell's first baseball book. It is a collection of all of his mid-60s baseball essays that appeared in The New Yorker and other magazines of the time. Angell has had similar baseball essay collections every five or six years since then. They are all worth reading, I simply picked

Veeck As in Wreck: The Autobiography of Bill Veeck > Customer Review #1: They do not make sports bios Like THIS anymore.....

The two things you need to know before you buy "Veeck As In Wreck" and you will buy this book, you must, if youve ever bought any professional sports bio before are the names Veeck and Linn. Bill Veeck you know from reputation the wacky promoter who invented everything from Ladies Day to Disco Demolition Night. The man owned several baseball franchises (including the Chicago White Sox twice, for some reason), and was known as a both a promotional genius and a shrewd financier. As for Ed Linn... well, Linn was also the ghostwriter for another fantastic, edgy, opinionated baseball book, Leo Durochers "Nice Guys Finish Last". Not surprisingly, "Veeck" reads a lot like the Durocher tome (and it came first, too!). On every page here youll find a funny anecdote, a scary bit of prescience, and a unique look at an otherwise-beloved icon. With Veecks memory and Linns acid pen, this book is quite hard to put down. Or to pick up, for that matter.
