ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE Team U.S.A. stomped on another AFL team yesterday, smoking the Rafters, 9-2. Brewers SS J.J. Hardy went 2-for-4 with a bomb, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs, Tigers 1B Ernie Young was a perfect 2-for-2 with a homer and 4 RBIs, and Mariners DH Justin Leone swatted a solo blast to lead the way for Team U.S.A. Braves LHP Andy Pratt was the winning pitcher for Team U.S.A., allowing 2 runs one earned and 2 hits in 3 innings of relief. He fanned 3 batters while walking one. Phillies RHP Ryan Madson started the game for Team U.S.A., and he would pitch very well, firing 4 shutout innings of 2-hit ball, whiffing 2. Team U.S.A. will need good starting pitching to qualify for the 2004 Olympics, so it's a very positive sign to see Madson pitch like he did. Giants DH Todd Linden went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Cardinals LF Shaun Boyd and Yankees RF Mike Vento had three hits each for the Rafters. RHP

My Baseball Dream
by Ray Bergman Game 19 - Blue Jays vs Twins at SkyDome
August 26, 1996
Toronto, Ontario, Canada is my next destination. But before I arrive, a short story about my travels from Boston. I drove to Vernon, NY, which is about 275 miles (half way to Toronto). I used route I-95 south to the Mass Turnpike and proceeded westbound, which connected me with the New York State Thruway (I-90). This route goes through some very a beautiful countryside, both in Massachusets and New York. I decided to stop outside Albany, NY and look up an old colleague that I worked with some 20 years ago at the New York telephone company. Fortunately, John Pedersen was home and I spent a enjoyable afternoon with him and his family. Their great company made the rest of the drive to Toronto seem a lot shorter. I guess "My Baseball Dream" is not all about baseball. I'm finding some of my detours are just as memorable as each new ballpark. Sunday night, the 25th of August, I spent at the Comfort Inn Suites in Vernon, NY. The hotel is on the same grounds as the Vernon Downs Race Track. My room on the seventh floor overlooks the racetrack. Why am I telling you this? What is the significance of this racetrack? Well, when I was in my late teens and early twenties I populated the harness race tracks in the Metropolitan New York area. On many ocassions, while studying the racing form, I came across horses that had raced at Vernon Downs. It was nice to view what I only had in my mind from years past. I am cured of some of my bad habits, so I don't have to test my fortitude today, as the horses are not running.

In the American League East, there are some good surprises and some bad surprises. On the good side we have the success of the Blue Jays and the early competitiveness of the Devil Rays, while on the bad side we have the Orioles, skydiving without a parachute. As usual, though, the surprises are less of a surprise to some than others. The conventional baseball analysis world is aghast at the way the Baltimore Orioles are crashing and burning right now. However, to many of us looking at the situation with a more analytical eye, the situation was almost inevitable. Even then, few of us predicted it would be as bad as it looks now, though. Unfortunately for Ray Miller, he's the victim of a stupid owner and two incredibly inept general managers. Not that Ray Miller is such a great manager, but even Miller Huggins couldn't rescue this team from the devastation wrought by Angelos, Gillick and Wren the last couple of years. Perhaps we'll all get lucky and Angelos will fire himself.

Baseball Digest
Nov, 2000 by Norman L Macht
ON MAY 23, THE SEATTLE MARINERS WERE IN BALTIMORE. ORIOLES STARTER PAT RAPP SCATTERED four hits over seven innings and left with a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless eighth, closer Mike Timlin came in, gave up three hits and a walk, and the Mariners tied the game. In the last of the ninth, Albert Belle singled and Cal Ripken hit a home run to win it. Timlin got the win, although he failed to do his job. Rapp got nothing, although he did his job superbly. Is that fair? A few weeks later against the Phillies, Rapp gave up seven runs in the second inning. The Orioles tried to come back but fell shod. Suppose they had managed to peck away and tie the score by the sixth inning? And suppose Jason Johnson had replaced Rapp in the third, pitched four shutout innings, then gave up one run in the seventh, a run that proved to be the difference in an 8-7 loss. Which pitcher was more responsible for the loss, Rapp or Johnson? But Johnson gets the defeat. Is that fair? It's a 1-1 tie after seven innings. Buddy Groom pitches a one-two-three eighth for the Orioles, gets the first two men in the last of the ninth, then a batter reaches first on an error. Mike Trombley relieves Groom. Bang. Bang. Two hits, winning run scores. Groom gets the loss. Trombley has a 0.00 earned run average for the day. Which one did his job and which did not?
