Hardest Working Pen in Baseball
Brought to you by Terry Francona, the hardest working bullpen in baseball: Games and innings pitched, prorated to 162 games: Alan Embree G IP 113 75.2 Mike Timlin G IP 97 91.2 Keith Foulke G IP 113 145.2 Sure, it's a little unfair to prorate the stats now , since Foulke and Timlin just pitched, and all bullpens will go through bursts of extra activity. But it does highlight the load the relievers have been carrying, not to mention that after pitching three straight days and in five straight games, Foulke will have to sit for a day or two. Thank goodness the Sox still have Scott Williamson, who was almost part of the off-season mega-deal. April 18, 2004 in

Sox Steal One
The Sox stole one today, beating the Yankees 3-2 in twelve innings despite getting no hits with runners in scoring position (and no home runs, either). The Sox went 0-for-19 with runners in scoring position. The Sox scored all their runs off sacrifice flies by Manny Ramirez Pokey Reese (!), and Mark Bellhorn , the last the game winner. The staff once again silenced the slumping Yankees' hitters. Bronson Arroyo turned in a strong six plus innings, yielding only Alex Rodriguez's homer through the first six.

Relief Pitchers ranked by the TSN Fantasy Index December 4, 2000 Print It The TSN Fantasy Pitchers Index rates pitchers based on their performance from 1998-2000. The system is loosely based on Bill James’ runs-created formula and credits pitchers for keeping runners off base and preventing extra-base hits. The ranking is the number of runs a pitcher saves your team each season. For example, From 1998-2000 Pedro Martinez has been about 82 runs better than an average pitcher. Note: This system does not give credit for a pitcher’s saves or won-lost record, but a good way to find sleeper closer candidates is to look for guys with good TSN “Fandex” ratings who haven’t gotten many save opportunities. Keith Foulke was also atop these rankings last year, when he had a mere nine saves. Good sleeper relief candidates for 2001 include Jim Mecir, Gabe White and Scott Sullivan. Epstein 1, Yankees
Curt Schilling The Red Sox didn't win the World Series by making the trade for Curt Schilling on Friday. They didn't automatically win the American League East from the Yankees. What they did was make the kind of play the Yankees make at this time of year. The Red Sox don't have as much money as the Yankees, but they have a lot. They also happen to have a general manager, Theo Epstein, who may turn out to be a more dangerous opponent than Josh Beckett. George Steinbrenner doesn't own the high end of the market anymore, even though he will probably go out now and try to sign the whole world, starting with Gary Sheffield. And when he does, he will forget all the small plays that set up this big play for the Red Sox. He will just spend and keep spending the way he always has. Too often the Yankees seem to be putting together a portfolio instead of a baseball team. They better start paying attention to Theo Epstein.

An unrivaled rivalry
Aaron Boone is mobbed by teammates after hitting homer to win last year's ALCS. This was in the visitors' clubhouse at Yankee Stadium last October, after the 25th game the Red Sox and Yankees had played last season, on the eve of the 26th. Trot Nixon had hit one 12 miles off Gabe White to officially finish the Yankees in Game 6. So these were the first moments between Game 6 and Game 7, everybody already talking about Pedro Martinez vs. Roger Clemens and the first Game 7 at Yankee Stadium since 1957. Todd Jones stood by his locker near the clubhouse door an hour after the game was over, still in uniform, smiling at the scene all around him, in no hurry to go anywhere. You play your whole life not knowing you will get a night like this. Jones, who had been one of the better relief pitchers once, was just hanging on with Boston. But he had gotten a piece of this series, even if it was less than a full inning. Jones had walked a guy and struck out a guy that night and so, no matter what, he could always say he had been a part of it all.

"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work ... I want to achieve it through not dying" (Woody Allen) Yesterday, my friend Murray and I were emailing each other regarding the Jim Rice/Hall of Fame post I made they other day. I had a thought about Rice and his ilk, thus: There are a number of players like Rice (Parker, Murphy, Dawson, Allen, Mattingly, etc.) that are going to be interesting litmus tests for the writers and especially the Vets' Committee. I'm not sure if I would put any of them in, but given the dearth of players from the '70s and '80s in the Hall (I have to re-check this but I remember there being something like half as many players as the other eras) someone else from those decades will have to go in. And Joe Morgan only has some many ex-Red teammates left. After he fast-tracks Ed Armbrister, they will have to look elsewhere. I just wonder who'll make the cut. We may not know for some time. Well, the issue stuck in my craw, and we all know how painful that is. So I did a little research:

Timlin has wild streak
By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff, 4/5/2004 BALTIMORE One thing Mike Timlin has shown beyond a doubt late in his career is impeccable command. He led the majors last season with the lowest ratio of walks per nine innings pitched (0.97), walking only nine batters in 83 2/3 innings. And three of those walks were intentional. ADVERTISEMENT Timlin was so sharp last season that he went 23 games into the season before he allowed his second walk. It was May 31, after he already had pitched more than 31 innings. That's why his appearance last night in the 7-2 loss to the Orioles was so unusual. With the Sox trailing, 3-1, as he started the seventh in relief of Pedro Martinez , Timlin retired only one batter before he walked Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora , putting himself in peril. "I stunk," Timlin said. "I just wasn't good. I was just missing." It helped that catcher Jason Varitek threw out Roberts trying to steal second. But Timlin allowed Miguel Tejada to single to right.

His appearance may have provided relief
By Bob Ryan, Globe Columnist, 3/5/2004 FORT MYERS, Fla. What is it like when you really and truly are getting everybody out? ADVERTISEMENT "It's hard to put into words," reports Mike Timlin. Ah, yes, Mike Timlin, the great What-If? of the 2003 American League Championship Series. He was warming up in the sixth inning of Game 7. He was warming up in the seventh inning, too. If Grady Little had decided to extend his thanks to Pedro Martinez after seven fine innings, Mike Timlin would have replaced him. Yeah, if. Can anyone say for sure what would have happened? No. But here is what we do know: Mike Timlin was the hottest setup man in baseball at the time. Mike Timlin was just about unhittable in October 2003. His postseason numbers were dazzling. He pitched 9 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball. He fanned 11, and of his two walks, one was intentional. If someone lasts 14 seasons in the big leagues, he must have something to offer. Clearly, Mike Timlin has been an effective reliever. But he has never been as detrimental to the mental health of batters as he was at the end of last season. "The guy pitched very well all year," says Jason Varitek. "He was great, other than one or two outings. As the year ended, he had the fear of the split going for him, and that made a difference. He had the sinker, the cutter, the four-seamer, and a change. As the season wore on, his confidence grew. And the confidence of the hitters was gone before they even stepped in. The big thing is he's learned to utilize his pitches to get to his sinker. When it came to getting out of a jam, he was our go-to guy all season."
