Author: Jennifer Frey, Washington Post Staff Writer BALL FOUR FOR DARRYL STRAWBERRY The Slugger Has Drug Problems. Is Baseball Giving Him A Pass? ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nikiara Hollmon cut the article out of the newspaper with a ballpoint pen, the point making a ragged, inky frame around the words. Then Nikiara, 12 years old, wadded up the piece of paper in her palm and brought it here, to the Southside Boys and Girls Club, where she has spent her afternoons for nearly six years. "What's wrong with Darryl?" she asked Carl Lavender, the club's executive director, on that afternoon late last month. Darryl was Darryl Strawberry - baseball star, drug addict, and, to Nikiara Hollmon, the guy who plays basketball with her out in the yard. The article said he had failed a drug test. That failed test would lead to a one-year suspension from baseball, Strawberry's second drug-related suspension in as many years and the third of his career. Strawberry met Nikiara during last season's suspension, when he fulfilled 150 hours of assigned community service by working with the children here in Jordan Park, one of St. Petersburg's worst neighborhoods.

MLB: Forget Darryl Strawberry the ballplayer, save Straw the man
Darryl Strawberry was one of the best baseball players in the game...now he's fighting to regain control of his life
Michael Avallone, 4/3/2001 “Swung on, hit in the air to rightfield, Evans going back...near the wall...goodbye homerun....Darryl Strawberry!!!! 7-5 New York!!!!” Most baseball fans don’t know when that phrase was uttered, or what the significance of it was. However, a few diehard fans of the New York Mets sure remember...and always will.
Gary Thorne, broadcaster for the Mets, said those words 15 years ago during game seven of the 1986 World Series. Straw’s homerun gave the Mets the breathing room they would need in defeating the Boston Red Sox to win their second World Series Championship.
Love him or hate him, any fan at the time had to admit that Darryl Strawberry was an immense talent. Playing in the spotlight of New York City for a colorful team, Strawberry basked in the glow of his newfound stardom. With a tall and lean, yet muscular build, Strawberry’s long swing would generate immense power, resulting in majestic homeruns.

BY PAUL DAUGHERTY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Baseball's favorite lost soul just flopped off the wagon again; its favorite pariah is still vainly thumbing a ride. It's a question for higher minds why the game concludes Darryl Strawberry's baseball life is worth saving (and re-saving) and Pete Rose's is not. How many times must Strawberry test positive before he gets to join Rose's league? Bud Selig has bent so far backward to help Strawberry, the commissioner could pass as a contortionist. As thanks, Strawberry has mocked Selig's trust. The timeline of Strawberry's screw-ups reads like the life story of a celebrity loser.

Born: March 12, 1962 in Los Angeles, CA What a shame. A Hall-of-Fame talent. But a completely undisciplined individual, at least as far as being able to resist the allure of drug abuse and moral vice. In the first eight seasons that Darryl started the year in the big leagues, he was named to the NL All-Star team. No Mets fan of the '80s will be able to forget the sight of Straw's follow-thru, as he launched another majestic home run deep into right field. But after that last All-Star season, he never got as many as 300 at-bats again, despite lasting in the big leagues for eight more years. And now Darryl will always be remembered as the morally bankrupt shell of a man who was arrested so many times for drug violations and threatened suicide, instead of the superstar who played on multiple World Championship clubs and courageously overcame cancer. As his old team takes a 3-1 Series lead over his other old team, a former hero takes another classic fall. By Allen St. John The wire story was short and to the point. "Troubled slugger Darryl Strawberry, already on probation for a drug charge, was jailed Wednesday after he was arrested for allegedly testing positive for cocaine." So as I arrived at Shea Stadium, Darryl's old haunt, for Game 4 of the World Series, this news was little more than prompt for a trivia question who is the only player to win a World Series with both the Mets and the Yankees? But strange as it seems to admit it on this side of the millennium, Darryl Strawberry is my favorite baseball player. There, I said it. One doesn't choose a favorite ballplayer. It's a lot more like falling in love than, say, picking a mutual fund. And 17 years ago, Darryl was easy to fall for. Four weeks younger than I, this skinny 21-year-old was, according to the scouts, the next Ted Williams.

The author, rather than follow the various players with anecdotes, instead seems to write the same paragraph over and over again about how the players had trouble coping with real life situation as a result of being coddled in high school. I've read books about individual players and most authors will let you live those players lives through events they faced over a period of years. This book is just way short on actual events. i.e. "Darryl's AA coach too easily looked the other way while Darryl failed to give 100%. They were awed by Darry'l potential etc." I'd much rather hear about an actual game where Darryl failed to cut a ball off in the gap resulting in extra base hits and the following the game went out slept w/ X, Y and Z and did Q drugs.

    By Mike Puma

"All that was left now was to blow his brains out and hope the life insurance policy would take care of his family," says Bergen Record sportswriter Bob Klapisch on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Strawberry helped the Yankees win their first World Series in 18 years with their victory over Atlanta in 1996. What he didn't achieve in baseball was more the story of Darryl Strawberry's career than what he actually accomplished. His 335 home runs and 1,000 RBI seem impressive until one considers how many more he might have recorded had he avoided drugs and alcohol. In his 17-year career with the Mets, Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, Strawberry was suspended three times by Major League Baseball for substance abuse. The Mets' all-time leader in homers (252) and RBI (733), the lean rightfielder burst on the scene in 1983 as a 21-year-old rookie who became revered for his smooth left-handed swing, with a sweet last name impossible to forget. He was part of four world championship teams, settling into a complementary role with the Yankees after starring for the Mets for eight seasons. Assorted injuries, drinking and a cocaine addiction sabotaged the 6-foot-6, 215-pound Strawberry in his prime. Over his final eight seasons, he averaged only 42 games and finished with a .259 lifetime average.

Darryl Strawberry (born March 12 ) is a former baseball player who is well known both for his play in the baseball field and for his controversies outside of it. Strawberry, a native of Los Angeles , was signed to become a professional by the Los Angeles Dodgers in . Soon, he was traded to the New York Mets . Some baseball critics had annointed him to be The Black Joe DiMaggio by then. In New York , he began to play in the MLB level in , posting 26 home-runs, hitting 7 triples and bringing in 74 runs, while hitting for a .257 average that year. He was named the National League's Rookie of The Year . In , he made it to the All-Star game, and once again, he hit 26 home-runs, while bringing in 97 runs. By , Strawberry and Dwight Gooden were widely known baseball stars for the Mets. Strawberry added 29 home-runs, while reaching a .277 hitting average. By , the Mets had surrounded Strawberry and Gooden with the likes of Jesse Orozco, Rafael Santana, Mookie Wilson , Gary Carter, Sid Fernandez, Kevin Mitchell, Lenny Dikstra and Keith Hernandez, and the Mets went on to rally from behind and beat the Boston Red Sox in a seven game World Series In , Strawberry almost became the first man in baseball history to surpass 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in one year, when he hit 39 home-runs and stole 37 bases. In addition to that, he hit 32 doubles that year. But the Mets couldn't reach the playoffs. He had 104 runs batted in that year.

Having the number one draft pick in the country has never been kind to the Mets. This pick is supposed to be a franchise maker, but instead many times it became a franchise disaster. Five times in their history, New York led off the draft and only once did this pick come up to expectations. In 1966, the Mets passed up the opportunity to draft Reggie Jackson in favor of Steve Chilcott with that heralded pick. Other notables include Tim Foli (picked in 1968 turned out to be a serviceable Major Leaguer, but hardly an all-star.) 84’s first pick, Shawn Abner, had a few cups of coffee in the majors, but was a bust. Paul Wilson has been a journeyman after coming in first overall in 1994. Only ONCE did the Mets number one pick overall work out and that was in 1980 when the team selected a lanky 18 year-old out of the tough neighborhood of Crenshaw in Los Angeles. Darryl Strawberry became a Met.
He was thought to be the “Black Ted Williams”. He had a long, looping swing that could hit a ball out of any park. He had speed and a gun for an arm. This made the City expect him to be the next Reggie and become “the straw that stirs the drink.” Instead, he had a controversial career that went from being a rising star with great expectations to domestic and drug problems and ultimately a prison term. For eight seasons, he was the “Straw that stirred the Mets.”
