Professional major league baseball teams drafted most of their starting players. The book from Michael Sokolove, The Ticket Out , looks back at the team that played in the championship game of the Los Angeles City baseball championships twenty-five years ago. There is a web site on The Los Angeles City baseball championship at Dodger Stadium . It reports that Crenshaw High School lost the finals of the 1979 City Championship to Granada Hills, 10-4. There is even a summary of the 1979 championship game from that web site. Granada took a 2-0 lead, then Crenshaw rallied for three runs in the third inning. With two outs, Granada Coach Darryl Stroh came to the mound to change pitchers. He had someone warming up in the bullpen, but Stroh wanted the toughest guy on his team to work out of his toughest situation. He beckoned his third baseman, who had not pitched in six weeks. The third baseman was NFL Star John Elway . Elway struck out Carl Jones to end the third inning rally. With Crenshaw still leading 3-2, Elway had to face Darryl Strawberry after the first two batters got on base in the fifth inning. The fifth inning was the time when Crenshaw had consistently started game-winning rallies throughout the 1979 season. Instead, Coach Brooks Hurst asked Strawberry to bunt. The lead runner was forced at third, the runner at second was caught trying to steal third, and Chris Brown struck out to end the Crenshaw threat. This book was not a big seller when it was published ten years ago. Some Met fans bought the book because Darryl was a big part of the Mets in 1990. I found this book on sale from a street vendor who had set up tent just outside the local laundromat. I had just put a load of laundry in the washing machine, so I was looking for something to read. This vendor had Hard Learnin marked down to fifty cents, so I bought it with few expectations. Darryl signed his first professional contract in 1980 and he made his major league debut with the Mets in 1983. He did not spent a lot of time in the minor leagues, but Darryl had remarkably few words about his experiences in the bushes. Sure, there were a couple of stories about Starvin Marvin in Kingsport and his unnamed friend from California who went to school in Jackson while Darryl played Double A ball there. His roommate Lloyd McClendon and his manager Gene Dusan at Lynchburg helped Darryl through his one bump in the road, in Class A ball. Darryl says he became so frustrated at his lack of progress that he did not show up for a game one day. He did not give us details, but Darryl tells us that Coach Dusan was compassionate and considerate.

For the third time in 10 years, Strawberry has entered a treatment center to deal with his addiction to the drug, and he has been suspended from baseball for a year for failing his drug test. My first thought on heating this news was: What's the matter with him? Can't he just say no, if only for the few more years that his knees hold out? He sure must like cocaine a lot. My second thought was: Gee, Strawberry sure is lucky he's rich and famous, and that all sorts of people like George Steinbrenner care about him, because if he were poor and not famous, odds are that he'd be sitting behind bars right now, probably for violating probation or parole with a dirty urine sample. This country is full of people whose only offense is an inability to say no to cocaine. Some go to fancy rehabs, some sort it out at home, and the unlucky ones get to think it over in jail or prison. My third thought was: Strawberry's addicted. He's got a disease, or a disability. This is not a case of moral weakness but of metabolic dysfunction. We don't punish folks for their diseases, or disabilities. If anything, we try to make accommodations for their disabilities so long as they don't pose direct threats to others. If we really believe that drug addiction is a disease, then there is no ethical or medical justification for depriving him of his livelihood for manifesting a symptom of the disease. Moreover, why in this case do we always blame the patient? Maybe the fault lies with the treatment provider.
