Of course, Stewart did homer in the frustrating loss to Seattle. Greg apparently has selective memory because he is insisting that he was the person who actually predicted the homerun. Anyway, Greg's favorite non-Twin has always been Shannon Stewart. As you all know at this point, yesterday, the Twins traded Bobby Kielty to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for OF Shannon Stewart and a player to be named later. Apparently, the Blue Jays will also pay Stewart for the rest of the year. Then he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. This move is generally being bashed by people in Minnesota as making no sense. When I initially found out that the trade had officially been made, it absolutely bugged me. I really couldn’t think of any good reasons to make this deal. Clearly, GM Terry Ryan has something for Stewart. He’s been trying to get him for 2 years! Let me start out by saying this: Shannon Stewart is a VERY good baseball player. He can hit. In 8 major league seasons, his career batting average is .302! He doesn’t walk a whole lot, but he also doesn’t strike out real often either (by today’s standards). He is a bona fide leadoff hitter. He certainly doesn’t answer any power questions the Twins have. He did hit 21 home runs in 2000, but aside from that, has never had more than 12 homers in a season. One thing he could give the Twins is a presence on the basepaths. In 1998, Stewart stole 51 bases. In 1999, he stole 37 bases. Since then, his totals have been 20, 27 and 14 stolen bases. He probably, right now, is a small step above Bobby Kielty. From a monetary standpoint, the Twins don’t have to pay anything for Stewart as the Blue Jays organization is paying him the rest of the year.

Friday August 22, 2003 TV TALK FANTASY FOOTBALL NEW DISCUSSION QUESTON OF THE WEEK Shannon Stewart 4, Royals 3 Last night’s Twins game started off rough, but the Twins came back and defeated the Royals behind the bat of Shannon Stewart. The win pushed the Twins ½ game ahead of the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central Division. It is the first time they have been ahead of the Royals since June 30. The White Sox did beat the Rangers 7-3 last night, so the White Sox lead the Twins by a ½ game and the Royals by 1 game! In other words, the Royals went from first place to third place last night! It started out a little rocky for the Twins. Kenny Rogers gave up single runs in the 1 st rd and 4 th innings. Former Twin Paul Abbott no-hit the Twins through the first 5 innings. But then in the 6 th , the Twins broke lose for three runs. Dustan Mohr singled and stole second before Cristian Guzman drew a walk. That brought up Shannon Stewart, and on the first pitch, Abbott threw Stewart a hanging curve ball. You could see in his face that Stewart wished he could get that pitch again. My thought at the time was “Don’t worry, Shannon, you’re about to see it again.” And on the second pitch, Stewart drilled another hanging curveball over the left field fence to tie the game at 3. But Minnesota gave up Bobby Kielty, who may be just as qualified to hit in the No. 1 spot and will cost much less. Stewart makes $6.2 million this year and becomes a free agent in October, while Kielty makes $325,000 and won't even be eligible for arbitration until after the 2004 season. Kielty, 26, had a hard time nailing down a regular job with Minnesota but produced when he played. He hit .291-12-46 in 289 at-bats a year ago and has hit .252-9-32 in 238 at-bats this year. He's a career .269-23-92 batter in 224 games, and his OBP (.375) and slugging percentage (.444) compare well to Stewart's. He's also a better outfielder and his arm is significantly stronger, though he's not as fast. One point of his concern is Kielty's lackluster production against righthanders this season. Though he's a switch-hitter, his on-base plus slugging against righties (.695) is significantly worse than against lefties (.999), which hadn't been a problem in the past. Then again, Stewart has similar splits (.705 versus 1.092) in 2003.
