The camera panned up to the seat, where two shaggy dudes, surrounded by a sea of empty seats, were conspicuously sharing a joint. "Talk about high!" sputtered Singleton. Stargell passed away on the day the Pirates open their new ballpark, only two days after they unveiled a 12-foot bronze statue of the man. While the irony may seem somewhat cruel, a baseball fan could justifiably look on his passing as a timely ascenscion to the best seat in the house, and a fitting reminder of his prominent place in one city's history. COLDENHAM: For baseball fans, Willie Stargell has always seemed larger than life, but now he's literally 12 feet tall and 1,900 pounds.
By Beth Quinn
The Times Herald-Record
bquinn@th-record.com
After living with Willie Stargell for a year, it really does feel like "We Are Family" to the folks who work at Polich Art Works in Coldenham.
And they're going to miss him when he leaves next Friday – all 12 feet, 1,900 pounds of the Pirates' great left-handed slugger. The bronze statue of Willie Stargell created at Polich's fine arts foundry will be going to Pittsburgh, where it will grace the entrance of the Pirates' new stadium, PNC Park, due to open next month. How he came to be created in the little Orange County hamlet along Route 17K, though, is a Herculean feat that rivals Stargell's own prowess at home plate. He began as an 18-inch clay sculpture by Pittsburgh artist Susan Wagner, who was commissioned by the Pirates' organization to create the statue. She chose an at-bat stance after studying hundreds of pictures of the .315 lifetime average hitter, who played for the Pirates from 1962 to 1982. He was affectionately known as "Pops" to the close-knit team that regarded itself a family.

Patriarch of Pirates

[Associated Press Photo] He could make those around him smile, while commanding their complete respect. Having covered major-league baseball for 19 years, the one absolute I know is that there are Hall of Fame people as opposed to Hall of Fame players. The former grace the game as much as the latter. And if you combine in one body both ingredients, you have something truly special. Willie Stargell was truly special. The phrase "larger than life" falls far short in describing the shadow cast across baseball by this gregarious gentle giant of a man, who died yesterday of a stroke. Not even the 12-foot statue of Stargell unveiled by the city of Pittsburgh on the eve of the opening of the Pirates' new stadium begins to tell the story. A truer measure of the man who was the loving patriarch of the legendary " We Are Fam-i-ly " Pirates teams of the 1970s was the tears that were guaranteed to be shed throughout the majors yesterday when the larger extended family learned it had lost Stargell far too soon, at age 61. "I tell you what, in the history of baseball, there is only one Pops," said Phil Niekro, a fellow Hall of Famer who choked back tears yesterday as he recalled the golden era of baseball when his Braves teams battled Stargell's Pirates.

Willie Stargell On this date in 1941, Willie Stargell was born. An African-American professional baseball player, he was born Wilver Dornel Stargell in Earlsboro, Oklahoma, with ancestry of African and Seminole Indian decent.
During the early 1950’s his family moved to Alameda, California and as a child he spent 12 hours a day on Alameda public housing sandlots playing baseball. As a young boy, Stargell would clown around West Oakland and Alameda with his friends. One time, he and his buddies sneaked into the Skippy Peanut Butter factory on Webster Street, pierced the peanut boxes and took the peanuts home to roast. Another time, they climbed over a fence into the Alameda Naval Air Station for a secret dip in the pool.
In the late 1950s, Stargell joined such baseball greats as Tommy Harper, Curt Motton, and Robert Davis on the Encinal High School baseball team. Even as a 5-foot-10, 165-pound teen-ager, he could swat home runs. He was an all-around athlete, lettering not only in baseball but also in basketball and football. He decided to stick with baseball after tiring of constantly being tackled in football. His nickname, "Pops," grew from those early years. He would help out anyone who needed it, as well as hit anything you could throw at him.
Years after, with the Pirates, Stargell made sure to thank the people who helped him up along the way, including Patterson and his mentor, Encinal High School coach, Don Grant. During those receptions, Stargell would talk about the discrimination he experienced as a Black baseball player in New Mexico. One incident happened in the minor leagues, where an angry fan once confronted him with a shotgun, but he quickly won them over with his power and personality. He always placed merit above color or skin. While playing for the Pirates’ farm club in Asheville, N.C., he was nicknamed "On the Hill Will" for the long homers he hit onto a hillside far beyond the right-field fence.

99. Tribute To Pops
remember where I was when I heard that Pops had died online trying to buy baseballtickets to the May 19th game promoted as willie stargell replica statue
http://www.cros.net/luke35/pops.htm
Wilver Dornel Stargell
ON MONDAY APRIL 9, 2001, BASEBALL LOST ONE OF ITS MOST BELOVED AND CHARISMATIC
SUPERSTARS TO EVER GRACE THE DIAMOND. THIS PAGE IS MY HUMBLE TRIBUTE TO "POPS" NUMBER 8. How ironic that Willie died on the very day that the Bucs opened PNC Park.
A statue immortalizing Pops was dedicated there just two days before.
As young children, we all had sports heroes we liked to imitate in our own neighborhood/backyard games. For me, that person was Willie Stargell. Unfortunately, I was too young to experience the other great "modern" Pirate, Roberto Clemente first hand, but I have very vivid memories of Pops and the late 70’s Buccos. There are even stronger memories of my (very poor) attempts to imitate that trademark twirling bat motion when we played our neighborhood wiffle ball games. More times than not, I was more concerned with whirling the bat than I was with actually hitting the ball. I never seemed to get the hang of EITHER one.
Somewhere in my mother’s closets back home there are surely countless photographs of a skinny 8 year old kid wearing the unmistakably recognizable pillbox Pirate cap. Not having perfected my sewing skills at that age, I used to tape my own paper stars around the sides of my cap. (They would last all of about 5 minutes before the wind or other elements would take them back off). But I used to pretend that those stars came from the recommendation of Willie and that I was part of the "Fam-A-Lee."
