ST. LOUIS WALK OF FAME
O ZZIE S MITH
The greatest defensive shortstop of all time, Osborne Earl “Ozzie” Smith anchored the thrilling “Runnin’ Redbirds” teams that appeared in three World Series, winning in 1982. A spectacularly acrobatic yet rock-steady fielder, “The Wizard’s” eye-popping defensive gems made him a fan favorite and earned him 13 consecutive Gold Gloves. The 15-time All-Star steadily improved his offense after joining the Cardinals in 1982 and ended his 19-year career in 1996 with 2,460 hits, 1,257 runs and 580 stolen bases. A fixture in the St. Louis community and one of the most popular Cardinal players ever, Ozzie Smith was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2002.

Ozzie event a hit

Cooperstown New Bureau
COOPERSTOWN - With the flair that made him famous, Ozzie Smith delighted fans Friday with acrobatic catches and throws while raising thousands of dollars for the National Baseball Hall of Fame's educational programs.
Smith, 47, a standout shortstop with the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals, is slated to be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday.
Friday morning, he was out on Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, taking chances with teams of two amateur players, who had agreed to donate from $750 to $1,000 per team to the Hall of Fame's school programs.
"The Legends sent us a check and asked us to pick a local team," said Jeff Idelson, the Hall of Fame's vice president for communications and education.
The Hall of Fame asked Cooperstown Central School baseball coach Frank Miosek to select players, and he chose Smith and Hazzard.
Along with 27 other teams, Smith and Hazzard took a turn on the field with the famous shortstop. Edmeston Central School baseball Coach Ron Tasior hit ground balls, and Ozzie Smith stabbed them and threw to Nathan Smith, who relayed the ball to Hazzard, simulating a double play in the event that raised $21,500, according to the Hall of Fame.

Ozzie gets his happy ending
Defensive wizard Ozzie Smith goes into the Hall of Fame by recounting the fairy-tale life that led him there.
July 29, 2002 COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. Go crazy, folks! The Wizard is in the Hall of Fame. Fighting back a tear or two, Ozzie Smith joined baseball's elite Sunday, accepting his position in the pantheon of greats with a speech that aptly described his storybook life. "This is tough," Smith, the only player to be elected this year, said, halting to brush away a tear after his son, Dustin, read the inscription on his plaque. "I've faced many challenges in my career, and if I was to rank them by difficulty, this moment in Cooperstown would rank at the top of the list. It's almost an impossible task to express in 20 short minutes a journey that has taken me over 20 years to complete." The man who took shortstop defense to another level during his 19-year career accomplished that, thanking everyone from his mom, Marvella, to his high school coach to the man who brought him to St. Louis, former manager Whitey Herzog.

http://www.dodgerplace.com/Ozzie.htm
Monday, January 14, 2002 The Amazing Ozzie Smith © by Sarah Morris, 2002 Before Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez revolutionized the shortstop position, Ozzie Smith made fans take notice of remarkable defensive skills. Though most fans still don’t think much about defense, except when a player commits a costly error, Smith made most fans marvel at his flashy glove. Unlike many Hall of Famers, Smith is being immortalized for his amazing glove and not for his offense. Traditionally shortstop has been known as the defensive position. If a shortstop could hit about .250, the team was happy if he could field his position well. During Smith’s career, it was often argued that he was the best defensive shortstop who ever lived. Ozzie Smith was drafted in 1977 by the San Diego Padres, and he made his major league debut in 1978. Though he hit a mere .258 during his rookie season, he finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. During the off-season of 1981, the Padres traded Smith to the St. Louis Cardinals. At first Ozzie Smith was not too thrilled with the trade, but soon he became synonymous with the Cardinals. In 1982 Smith helped his new team win a world championship. Though he was not a great offensive player, he showed no fear while playing defense. Everybody would swear he had a vacuum in his glove because almost every ball close to Smith was caught. He had great range and gymnastic skills enabling him to catch balls thought impossible for a shortstop.

Cardinals' Ozzie Smith to be honored with honorary degree
Mobile sandlots to the Baseball Hall of Fame: Smith hero on and off field
By Lesley McCullough Published: Friday, May 16, 2003 Thirteen-time Goldglove winner Ozzie Smith is one of 6 to be recognized with hononorary degrees. While most of this year's graduating seniors were just beginning their seventeen-year journey through education, Osborne "Ozzie" E. Smith was at the height of his nineteen-season Hall of Fame baseball career, the latter fifteen of which he played for the St. Louis Cardinals. For his accomplishments on and off the field, Washington University will award Smith with an honorary doctorate of humanities. Smith was born in Mobile, Alabama but spent his childhood on the west coast growing up in Los Angeles, California. His first experience with organized sports was through the local community YMCA. Not only did he love to play baseball, but with the hometown Dodgers close by, he was also a fan. Commenting on those early baseball years he said, "We would take the bus to Dodgers Stadium a lot and sit in the bleachers to watch the games." His love of baseball grew from those experiences as well as playing in the nearby sandlot with others from his neighborhood.
