Overall, 237 of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served the game as Major and Negro League players, managers, executives, pioneers and umpires have a permanent residence in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The Members have been elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America and specially appointed committees, such as the Veterans' Committee, and the now-defunct Committee on the Negro Leagues. All America Teams
Count appearances on Deadball Era all-star teams . Several summary counts supplement this introduction and annual listing. Baseball Magazine began publication as a monthly in May 1908. Soon after the baseball season ended, the November issue (vol. 2, no. 1) included a one-page article, "All-Star League Teams" (1908) . That seminal article listed "All-American League", "All-National League", and "All America" teams under the line, "Following are the All-Star team selections of The Baseball Magazine Every year 1908 to 1950, BBMag selected the two league teams and one "All America" team. The selections were unattributed 1908-10, then attributed to F.C. Lane, 1911-37, and Dan Daniels, 1938-50. Here the annual AL and NL teams are listed explicitly and the annual "All America" team is identified by bold face in the league listings. For 1913 only, there is a second team from each league. Every team comprises one player each at positions 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B, and three Outfielders; that is, seven players for seven regular positions. The 1908-1911 teams name one man at outfield positions LF, CF, and RF, but the man did not generally play the position. Beginning in 1912, every team simply names three outfielders. Here, the men who regularly played centerfield are marked "[cf]". The "battery" of pitchers and catchers is variable: 1908 2 catchers, 5 pitchers 1909 3 catchers, 5 pitchers 1910 2 catchers, 5 pitchers (3 pitchers on each league team) 1911 4 catchers, 6 pitchers (4-5 pitchers on the league teams) 1912 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1913 1 catcher, 2 pitchers (same on the league second teams) 1914 2 catchers, 3 pitchers 1915-19 1 catcher, 2 pitchers

Baseball needs players like Sisler, Bancroft
MIKE BUNCH Collegian Take me out to the ballgame... Summer's coming, and along with it follows the memory of the smell of the grass, shouts of hot dog vendors, players with cool nicknames and the roar of the crowd. What does modern baseball have to compare? I guess the smell of green money, the heat of astroturf and stale beer spilled on you by obnoxious drunks. Today's games and crowds would be almost unrecognizable by many of the great (and often forgotten) players of past days. One of those forgotten players with an an usual nickname was one of the greatest batters in the history of the game, but he began his career as a pitcher. His name was George. No, not George Herman Ruth ("Babe" to his friends and the rest of the world,) it was "Gorgeous George" Sisler. Originally a southpaw pitcher like Babe, Sisler began his career in 1915 and faced some of the outstanding pitchers of his day. Twice in his rookie season he faced the Hall-of-Famer Walter Johnson and walked away with complete game victories. Not too many other pitchers could say the same thing. Sisler's batting skills soon overcame his pitching ability and, like Babe, he was moved where his bat could do the talking.

In the Hall of Fame gallery are bronze plaques commemorating the “immortals” of baseball. Each year elections are held to select new members to the Hall of Fame. Electees are mainly former players but also include others who have contributed to the advancement of the game. By 1995 only 172 players had been inducted out of about 14,000 who had played major league baseball. Other inductees include baseball managers, umpires, pioneers of the game, baseball executives, and players from the Negro baseball leagues.
The Hall of Fame Committee on Veterans elects players who have been retired from the major leagues for at least 23 years and who competed in at least ten seasons in the major leagues. Members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America elect players who have retired from playing five years before election, been active in the game during the preceding two decades, and competed in at least ten seasons in the major leagues.
