    History
Inspired by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University, the Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1936 with the selection of five players: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) chose eight more players for induction when the hall formally opened in Cooperstown, NY, on June 12, 1939. They were Grover Cleveland Alexander, Eddie Collins, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Napoleon Lajoie, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. The location of the hall and the year of its opening were chosen because of the myth that Abner Doubleday had invented baseball at Cooperstown in 1839, although the myth had been pretty thoroughly discredited by the time the Hall of Fame opened. (See Doubleday Myth Elections were originally held at three-year intervals, in 1939, 1942, and 1945, but annual elections began in 1946. From 1958 through 1966, they were held every two years, then became annual once more in 1967.

He is probably the only player other than Gehrig who can reasonably be considered the greatest first baseman ever in terms of peak value. The reason I say that is that the other top contenders, most notably (Jimmie) Foxx and (Willie) McCovey, were the same type of players that Gehrig was, and thus they can be directly compared to him, a comparison that they clearly lose. But the man I’m referring to was a different type of player, he didn’t have the home run pop, but he hit for a higher average, was faster and a better defensive player than Gehrig, and the comparison between the two is not easy.
—Bill James, The Historical Baseball Abstract.
Who, you ask, was this great first baseman?
George Sisler was a star pitcher at Central High School in Akron, Ohio, when he signed his first contract at the age of 17, making him the property of Akron, a club in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League and a farm team of Columbus. Akron then sold Sisler to Columbus, which in turn sold the southpaw to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates demanded that Sisler join the team after high school graduation but Sisler had other plans, enrolling at the University of Michigan instead, where he played for the legendary Branch Rickey. Pittsburgh appealed to the National Commission, the forerunner of the commissioner. The Commission ruled that Sisler’s contract was null and void (because at 17 years old he was legally too young to have signed a contract without his parents’ consent) and declared the young pitcher a free agent. The future first baseman signed with the St. Louis Browns, who had hired Rickey to manage the team, and joined them in June of 1915 after three successful seasons with his college squad.

Baseball Digest
Dec, 2000 by Jeffrey Flanagan
Hall of Famer looks back on controversial four-bagger hit against Yankees 17 years ago IT MIGHT BE THE MOST famous piece of wood in Royals history. But it's what was on it, and the commotion that resulted, that led to its resting place at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. It is the bat used in the infamous pine-tar incident. In case you were too young to remember, it was July 24, 1983 when the Royals' George Brett hit a two-run homer and then watched in disbelief when umpire Tim McClelland measured Brett's bat for excessive pine tar (18 inches beyond the handle). McClelland subsequently erased the homer and ruled Brett out. The rest of the visual story still captures observers watching the incident for the first time on videoa disbelieving and completely wigged-out Brett charging from the dugout, presumably in an attempt to completely dismember McClelland, and umpires and players alike trying desperately to restrain Brett.
