George Sisler, Baseball's Forgotten Great
Rick Huhn
"Gorgeous George" Sisler, a left-handed first baseman, began his major-league baseball career in 1915 with the St. Louis Browns. During his sixteen years in the majors, he played with such baseball luminaries as Ty Cobb (who once called Sisler "the nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer"), Babe Ruth, and Rogers Hornsby. He was considered by these stars of the sport to be their equal, and Branch Rickey, one of baseball's foremost innovators and talent scouts, once said that in 1922 Sisler was "the greatest player that ever lived." During his illustrious career he was a .340 hitter, twice achieving the rare feat of hitting more than .400. His 257 hits in 1920 is still the record for the "modern" era. Considered by many to be one of the game's most skillful first basemen, he was the first at his position to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Yet unlike many of his peers who became household names, Sisler has faded from baseball's collective consciousness. Now in The Sizzler

Worth a look, Baseball-almanac presents: Record Books, Famous Firsts and Feats Top 10 Lists The Guru's top ten single season records by category for Batting and Pitching (SCROLL DOWN FOR TOP 10 LISTS!!) Batting Notes: Rankings were based on seasons from 1893 to 1998 and more than 400 plate appearances (ab+bb+hpb) were required. Percents for AVG and SLG were based on at bats. Percents for 2B, 3B, HR, SO and BB were based on plate appearances. SB% was based on SB attempts and more than 25 SB's were required to qualify. OPS was based on AVG+SLG. Runs Created was based on Bill James' formula as follows: =(([h]+[bb]+[hpb]-[cs])*([h]+[2b]+2*[3b]+3*[hr]) +.26*([bb]-[ibb]+[hpb])+.52*([sh]+[sf]+sb])) /([ab]+[bb]+[hpb]+[sh]+[sf]) The purpose of his formula was to create the ultimate statistic characterizing the total offense production of a player. However, it favors players with more games played, so for example, George Brett's .390 batting avg season ranks as his 2nd most productive even though it was easily his most productive per plate appearance. So, I calculated OPS too for comparative purposes.

John Holway Negro Leagues .400 AND THE NEGRO LEAGUES BY JOHN B HOLWAY Five men hit .400 in the white major legues since 1900 - Ty Curve ball and Rogers Hornsby (three times each), George Sisler twice, Larry Lajoie, Joe Jackson, George Sisler, Harry Heilmann, Bill Terry, and Ted Wiliams. Several - Cobb and Hornsby in 1922, Heilmann, and Terry - barely made it over the magic threshold. Several names are missing from the list: Pop Lloyd, Josh Gibson, Turkey Stearnes, Mule Suttles, and other giants of the Negro Leagues. After more than 30 years poring over Negro League box scores and compiling the most comprehensive collection of stories and statistics ever done, my conclusion: The black stars in the 60 years before Jackie Robinson were just as great as the black stars in the almost 60 years after him. And that means they were just as great as the white stars of their own day. They played Cobb, Ruth, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson etc every year after the World Series and won as many games as they lost - won a few more, to be exact. How many blacks might have hit .400 before Jackie Robinson? In the almost half-century since then, three men have batted over .390. Two of them - Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn were black.

Baseball Hall of Fame
The Baseball Hall of Fame was established in 1936, the first ball players selected: Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Not a bad group.. The first players inducted when the hall opened in Cooperstown, NY, in 1939. They were Grover Cleveland Alexander, Eddie Collins, Lou Gehrig, Willie Keeler, Napoleon Lajoie, Cy Young, George Sisler, and Tris Speaker The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was officially dedicated on June 12, 1939. The game's four ranking executives of the period—Landis, Frick, Harridge and William G. Bramham, President of the National Association, participated in the ribbon-cutting. Of the 25 players who had been elected to the Hall of Fame up to that point, 11 were still living. Between the original dedication in 1939 and the completion of the National Baseball Library expansion, several significant developments had taken place. New wings were opened on July 24, 1950 and on May 10, 1980; and the Hall of Fame Gallery was dedicated on August 4, 1958. The National Baseball Library opened its doors on July 22, 1968 and the Fetzer-Yawkey Building was dedicated on June 10, 1989. An $8 million Library expansion was completed in 1994, linking the library facility to the Hall of Fame Gallery and incorporating exciting new exhibits on the media and on baseball movies

A first baseman for the St. Louis Browns, George Sisler had a reputation for being an all-around great player with solid fielding, throwing, base running, and hitting abilities.
At the age of 28, seven years after joining the major league, Sisler suffered from a severe sinus infection that permanently affected his eyes and forced him to sit out the 1923 baseball season. Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, are frequently preceded by a cold, allergy attack, or irritation by environmental pollutants. Normally, mucus collecting in the sinuses drains into the nasal passages. However, a cold or allergy attack causes sinuses to become inflamed and unable to drain, causing congestion and potentially infection.
Sisler never played baseball quite the same after his infection. He eventually became a manager and then a scout for various teams. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Ludwig van Beethoven
