Saberhagen, Kelly join crowded list of potential inductees for 2001
The recently announced retirements of pitcher Bret Saberhagen and Minnesota manager Tom Kelly are putting future Hall of Fame elections into perspective.
When Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken announced their impending (and now consummated) retirements earlier in the season, it became a virtual certainty that somebody would be elected in 2007. That is the year they will first be eligible for Hall consideration, and both of them have to be regarded as odds-on favorites for first-ballot election.
Not unanimously; nobody ever has been, and at least one writer is on record to the effect that he will not vote for a player in his first year of eligibility. (The newspaper profession, like any other, is not free of what mystery writer Rex Stout once called "jackassery." And yes, there is such a word; I checked the dictionary.)
Moreover, speculation has been rife all season that this is the last hurrah for Yankee outfielder Paul O'Neill; indeed, O'Neill hinted as much early in the year.

The new millennium brought much hope for the future of Royals baseball in Kansas City. The Royals and their fans welcomed in a new era with David Glass taking over ownership in May of 2000. On the field, the Royals continued to show improvement and gave their fans one of the best offensive performances in team history. KC set a team record for most runs scored in a season behind its new generation of stars. Mike Sweeney broke the team RBI mark. Jermaine Dye won a Gold Glove in right field and established himself as one of the top outfielders in the game. Fan-favorite Joe Randa returned to the Royals and stabilized the third base position, while adding offensive punch to an already potent Royals attack. With its young stars gaining additional experience and with an influx of new talent developed from within, Kansas City fans have high hopes as they look forward to another decade of exciting Royals baseball.
1969-79 The Kansas City Royals were purchased as an expansion franchise by Ewing Kauffman and joined the Major Leagues in 1969. Beautiful Royals Stadium opened in 1973 and hosted that year's All-Star Game. Kansas City developed young players such as George Brett, Frank White, and Dennis Leonard and acquired mainstays in Paul Splittorff, Hal McRae, and Amos Otis via trade. The Royals reaped the benefits and became an instant success, winning three American League titles in 1976, 1977, and 1978. more>>
1980-89 The Royals reached the top of baseball with a trip to their first World Series in 1980 and the organization's first World Championship in 1985. Kansas City also followed George Brett's chase of the .400 mark, three playoff berths, and numerous pennant chases and All-Star selections. Bo Jackson, Bret Saberhagen, Mark Gubicza, and Kevin Seitzer emerged as Kansas City's new wave of stars in the 1980s. more>>
