History of the MLB All-Star game - 1990 American League 2,
National League
Bret Saberhagen shuts down the National League. (AP File) After 85 minutes of assorted rain delays, the record shows that the American League was the winner, thanks to Julio Franco's two-run double off Rob Dibble. The two-bagger came on the third pitch after a 68-minute, seventh-inning rain delay in Chicago. It was the fourth victory in five years for the AL, but the NL still led the series, 37-23-1. Bret Saberhagen, the third of six AL pitchers, was the winner and fulfilled his boyhood dream of performing in Wrigley Field, only a few miles from his birthplace. Dennis Eckersley got the save. Bob Welch of Oakland, Dave Stieb of Toronto, Saberhagen, Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox, Chuck Finley of California and Eckersley combined to hold the NL to two hits a broken bat single in the first by Will Clark and a ninth-inning single by Len Dykstra. The NL's hit total is the lowest in All-Star history. Box Score: Americans AB R H RBI R. Henderson, lf

The Quality Start is a Useful Statistic
By David W. Smith
Spring, 1992 First, let's address the initial question: what is the ERA of pitchers in their quality starts? Table 1 is a summary of the results from all games from 1984-1991, 16831 games total, of which about 52% were quality starts. The information in this table is divided two ways. First, each league is presented individually, and second, the games are separated by quality starts and non-quality starts. Table 1. Summary of Quality Start data from 1984-1991 %QS Starts W L Pct IP ERA IP/Start AL QS 49.3 8935 6184 2749 .692 67370.1 1.93 7.54 AL NQS 9195 2878 6313 .313 44578.1 7.65 4.85 NL QS 54.9 8522 5590 2927 .656 62767.1 1.89 7.37 NL NQS 7010 2170 4833 .309 33171.2 7.28 4.73 ML QS 51.9 17457 11774 5676 .674 130137.2 1.91 7.45 ML NQS 16205 5048 11146 .311 77750.0 7.50 4.80 Totals 33662 16822 16822 .500 207887.2 4.00 6.18 Note 1: The 33662 Starts came in 16831 games, of which 9 were ties. Note 2: There were 989 quality starts in which the pitcher had exactly six innings pitched and allowed 3 earned runs, for a "Klein percentage" of 5.7%. There are three main points to make from this table.

What I Remember about Baseball
I remember going to my first major league baseball game. The Royals were playing the Cleveland Indians. I was six years old and the Royals were a great team. They had stars like George Brett, Dennis Leonard, Frank White, and my favorite Royals player, Willie Wilson (he happens to share my birthday). That year, they went on to their first World Series. They lost, but they still had made it. What I remember most about that game is the sights. I had never seen a major league game before, and I enjoyed it.
I remember my next major league game I saw. This time, Toronto came to town to play the Royals. It was at this game that I learned Canada was another country (I was still 6). Up till then, I had always thought Canada was just another state. When we had to stand for two national athems, I asked my aunt why. She told me that the Canadians have just as much right as us to hear their anthem. You never know what you learn at a baseball game.
I remember July 23rd, 1983. George Brett getting called out for having too much pine tar on his bat. Pine tar doesn't really help the ball travel farther, it just helps with the grip. But he got called out because the pine tar went too far up his bat. But the thing I remember the most is George Brett going ballistic and running out of the dugout.

Here's an easy way to figure it out. Team slugging far below .432 (AL) or .405 (NL): your team doesn't hit for power, meaning fewer runners scoring and fewer home runs (see Toronto and Montreal). Team on-base percentage far below .345 (AL) or .333 (NL): your team doesn't get on base, making it difficult for runners to score (see Kansas City and Arizona). This almost always means your team can't take a walk. Team ERA far above 4.74 (AL) or 4.40 (NL): Your pitching sucks. Now that you know what's wrong, it's time to diagnose what exactly is wrong with your pitching staff. Here's an easy way to figure it out: Does your staff include Scott Sanders or Norm Charlton?
