Six days later, Rose joined the 3,000-Hit Club in typical "Charlie Hustle" fashion. The fiery Rose beat out an infield hit for #2999 and then followed with a line drive to left for #3000. Both hits came off Montreal pitcher Steve Rogers, a future teammate of Rose's when the all-time hit king briefly played with the Expos in 1984. While Rose would continue to play another eight seasons, retiring with a record 4,256 hits, the next member of the 3,000-Hit Club reached the mark in the final months of his career. Pete Rose bet on baseball.
So Pete Rose admits he Bet on Basebasll the only surprise here is that Pete Rose finally figured out baseball wasn't going to relent and came clean. I give him full credit for finally being willing to. As far as I'm concerned, it's time to move on. Rose did what baseball demanded of him, now baseball should do it's part: I suggest they partially remove the ban on Rose, by allowing him access to parks, making him eligible to the hall, and reinstating all of his abilities, except for two: Pete rose should never be allowed to manage a baseball team, and not be allowed in any player-personnel position with a baseball team. If he wants to join a baseball team in marketing or promotion or broadcasting or something else fine. If they want to put him in the hall of fame, great (he belongs) but he can't take any position where he might affect a team's play or the outcome of a game. I don't think that's unfair. but if you're going to allow Pete into the Hall of Fame, it's time to reconsider Shoeless Joe as well. Either both deserve to go in, or neither.
Update: George Vecsey really nails the essentials here. And

In recent days, Rose has been hitting the TV networks (our modern version of a confessional), saying he is sorry that he gambled and sorry (sort of) that he lied about it for 14 years, impugning the motives and credibility of baseball commissioners and John Dowd, baseball's lead investigator into his wagering ways. Asked by ABC's Charles Gibson if he would like to apologize to former commissioner Fay Vincent for the critical things Rose has said, Rose said not really because he didn't like "the way" Vincent conducted the investigation.

Main Sunday :: September 14, 2003 On Pete Rose's Reinstatement We were curious why Pete Rose was on our plane to Denver yesterayhe sat in the row in front of us. He is a really big, beefy guy. We couldn't figure out who he was at first, but after a few people approached for autographs, we figured it out. Anyway, this might have something to do with his Denver appearance: The John Elway golf tournament which is going on this week.
