Peter Edward Rose was born April 14, 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in Anderson Ferry, Ohio as one of four children to Harry and LaVerne Rose. Pete was encouraged as a young boy to participate in sports. His father, who played semiprofessional football, was the biggest influence on Pete and his sports career.
Rose spent his childhood playing baseball with friends and later played for his local little league team. He played both baseball and football at Western Hills High School. Rose played well in high school and signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds after his high school graduation. He was assigned to play for the Reds minor league team in Geneva, New York. Rose improved his game, and was promoted through the ranks of the Reds organization for the next couple of years. During that time, he played for the Reds farm team in Tampa, Florida and also played for the Class B team in Macon, Georgia.
By the start of the 1963 season, Pete was the Reds' regular at second base. His hard working style prompted Hall-of-Fame Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford to label him "Charlie Hustle," a nickname that Rose would be known by for the rest of his career. He hit .273 that season and played in nearly every game. He was rewarded for his efforts that season and was named National League Rookie of the Year in 1963.

The Assassinated Press
Can Pete Rose's Gambling Do For the Baseball Hall Of Fame
Let He Who is Without Sin Cast The First Spitball:
By ARNIE PALUCCI
Assassinated Press Editor Newark-An unrepentant, degenerate gambler like Pete Rose should not be allowed back into the game of baseball. But he should be in the Hall of Fame. Why? Because the asshole earned it-4256 times. You gotta be a wack job to stay in the game long enough to collect 4000 hits in the first place. Two guys have done it. Cobb and Rose. I rest my case. Not quiteAnd for every time you went barreling into the second baseman in the third, in the fifth the short stop stuck his knee up your septum coming across the bag for an easy force or the first baseman just happened to get pulled off the bag and had to slap you upside the head for the tag. Love hurtslike a mothafucka. Baseball already irrevocably fucked up its legacy when it denied African Americans access to the Major leagues for six decades. And this injustice points to precisely why Pete Rose should not be denied his place in the Hall of Fame- the record books and in Rose's case the record for most hits lifetime. Ask Josh Gibson. If the number ain't there e.g. in the official record, it's like it never happened. Baseball like no other is a game of stats. Achievement, lifetime and otherwise, is largely measured by statistics whose mathematics and practical value are being refined all of the time.

As many of our loyal customers know, I was very upset last Monday when I heard Pete Rose admit to betting on baseball games. Many of you who have visited this page in the past have read my defense of Pete against the Dowd Report , and therefore could understand my anger. I felt like I had been used. In fact, I sat right down last Monday night after the news had broke and wrote an article in which I expressed my anger, as well as my opinion that according to baseball's rules Pete Rose could never be allowed to manage again. As it turns out, I was not the only fan of Pete to feel this way. Based on his admission, coupled with excerpts from his new book "My Prison Without Bars", many fans and sportswriters lashed out against Pete saying he was unworthy for induction into Baseball's Hall of Fame (something I still didn't agree with) and should never be allowed anywhere near a professional baseball team again. To be honest, I was so mad I nearly skipped watching "Prime Time" on ABC last Thursday night, when Pete sat down with Charlie Gibson to attempt to explain himself. I'm glad I didn't.

He gave betting lowdown to teens
By Associated Press, 1/16/2004 Turns out Pete Rose publicly admitted betting on baseball well before his book was published. ADVERTISEMENT It happened Dec. 9, 2002, when Rose told a high school newspaper class in California that he'd gambled on games. During an hourlong interview with student journalists at Calabasas High, Rose was asked why he gave up a spot in baseball's Hall of Fame to "do what you did," school journalism adviser Ian Godburn said yesterday. "You mean, why did I bet on baseball?" Rose replied, according to a videotape of the interview. "Well, it was because I made mistakes. I made mistakes. You know, when you do something, you think you're not going to get caught. It's not like I'm the only guy in the world to gamble." He then asked the student a question in turn. "If you're going to become an alcoholic or drug addict or spousal beater or a gambler, which do you hope to do?" "Probably gambler," she replied.

(AP) The baseball commissioner's top deputy met with Pete Rose and his business agent in Florida last month, part of negotiations that could lead to the reinstatement of the sport's career hits leader.
Bob DuPuy, baseball's president and chief operating officer, traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to speak with Rose and his business agent, Warren Greene on Dec. 16.
Commissioner Bud Selig had met secretly with Rose in Milwaukee on Nov. 25.
DuPuy declined to comment on the status of negotiations, which became public Dec. 9.
"We've got a pending application. We're continuing to review that petition," DuPuy said Wednesday. "The commissioner has discussed it with Pete. Other than that, I don't have anything to say." Newsday reported Wednesday that a friend of Rose, who was not identified, said the former player was prepared to admit he bet on baseball.

Will Pete Rose Make A Play?

Former Cincinnati Reds baseball player and manager Pete Rose (Photo: AP)
A baseball official tells the Times that in a November 2002 meeting, Rose admitted to Selig that he bet on baseball, but offered no explanation for why he broke one of the cardinal rules of major league ethics.
(CBS)
Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader, may make a bid for reinstatement to the game and election to the Hall of Fame in an autobiography due out next week.
A newspaper reports Rose has already admitted to Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig that he bet on baseball and may do the same in his book.
The New York Times reports the contents of the book, " My Prison Without Bars," are being tightly held by its publisher. However, a large run of 500,000 copies is planned, suggesting the book — due out on Jan. 8 — might contain significant revelations.
Rose is currently banned for life from baseball because an MLB investigation found he had bet on baseball, including wagers on games in which his Cincinnati Reds played when Rose managed them.

Pete Rose Baseball reviewed by Tim Duarte Pete Rose Baseball was designed by Alex DeMeo and is the most advanced baseball game programmed for the Atari 2600. When you compare Pete Rose Baseball to Home Run (by Atari), PRB seems to be light years ahead. You'd think PRB was a game for the Atari 8-bit computer or the Commodore 64. As Mark Androvich mentioned in (print) issue 16, "Pete Rose Baseball is the closest that the 2600 ever go to the level of sophistication of computer baseball games such as Hardball This game was released before Pete Rose got "nabbed" for gambling on professional baseball games and was asked to leave the game. I don't know if Pete may be a friend of Alex, or if Alex was a fan of Pete. I don't see what involvement Pete Rose has to do with the game, other than Absolute may have been looking for a "big name" endorsement. (Today a company could re-release the game as Mark Maguire Baseball and make a fortune.) The game shows the view from many different angles. The view most seen is the angle from right behind the pitcher. This is similar to the view we normally see while watching a baseball game on TV. A small diamond in the corner of the screen shows if there are any base runners. The pitcher can choose among five different types of pitches and the screen changes once the ball is hit. The second view is a fielding screen, where the player must try to catch the ball. The fielding view is from a "bird's eye view" and you can never see the entire baseball diamond on the screen at once.

Pete Rose is undoubtedly one of the greatest and most exciting players in baseball history. Nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" for the gritty and determined way he played the game, Rose overcame an obvious lack of raw talent to eventually become the Major League record holder in many of baseball’s most prestigious statistical categories, including career hits, singles, at-bats and games played. He invented, or at least popularized, the head first slide. He never played a game at the end of which his uniform wasn’t dirty. Walked 1,566 times in his career, Rose never walked, but always sprinted to first base. Yet, Rose’s on-field legacy will be forever superceded by his callous disregard for the game he played, managed and claims to love so much. He broke baseball’s cardinal rule, which states, "Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible." (Major League Rule 21) For this, Charlie Hustle was "permanently" banned from baseball in 1989. And for this, Major League Baseball should balk at Rose’s current attempt at one more (and ultimate) free pass — to be reinstated to the game and inducted into its Hall of Fame.
