Baseball's all-time hits leader is in the news again, as he yearns for reinstatement into Major League Baseball. In 1989, Rose was "banned from MLB for life" by commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti after an investigation suggested that Rose, a player-manager for the Cincinnati Reds in the mid 1980s, placed bets on major league games. John Dowd (no relation), who headed the investigation and compiled a 225-page report, cited 412 incidents that Rose wagered on baseball, including 52 on the Reds. However, the report also said, "No evidence was discovered that Rose bet against the Cincinnati Reds."

Rose admits to lying in autobiography SI Exclusive More from My Prison Without Bars Flashback: The case against Rose Flashback: Pete's grim vigil NEW YORK (SI.com) In his new book, written with Rick Hill, My Prison Without Bars, Pete Rose admits for the first time publicly that he placed bets with bookies on Cincinnati Reds games as often as five times a week while managing the team in 1987. An exclusive excerpt of the autobiography will be published in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, available on newsstands beginning Wednesday or online now to SI subscribers In the book, Rose claims that he previously made the same admission to commissioner Bud Selig 14 months ago. "Mr. Selig looked at me and said, 'I want to know one thing. Did you bet on baseball?'" Rose writes. "I looked him in the eye. 'Sir, my daddy taught me two things in life how to play baseball and how to take responsibility for my actions. I learned the first one pretty well. The other, I've had some trouble with. Yes, sir, I did bet on baseball.'" "How often?" Selig asked.

Pete Rose biding his time for Hall of Fame
Posted: Wed August 6, 1997 at 10:45 AM ET From Nick Charles, CNN/SI COOPERSTOWN, New York The Baseball Hall of Fame enshrined four new members over the weekend in Cooperstown, New York. Every man whose plaque hangs there is in because of what he did on a baseball diamond. One former superstar, who was in town at the same time, is still playing an excruciating waiting game. While baseball swung open the doors of the Hall of Fame and wrote the names of four more men in indelible ink, Pete Rose was also in Cooperstown on the outside looking in. "People think that I go home and cry every night because I'm not gonna be on the stage, said Rose. "I wasn't on the stage Sunday when they had the Hall of Fame induction, but I'm happy for all the guys." Player Spotlight Craig Tomarkin The following comparison of Pete Rose to his long-time teammates: Bench, Morgan, Foster and Perez, shows that he was not in the top 3 players on his own team (and we're not even including the pitchers on his team such as Tom Seaver). To illustrate the point, batting records of their best single season, top 5 seasons, top 10 seasons and careers were compared. Their seasons were sorted by the following criteria to determine which is their "best." And, with exception of the "career" totals, no season with fewer than 400 plate appearances was included. The players were sorted by OPS (on base avg + slugging avg) and by Total Avg (TA=batting avg + slugging avg). Then, the rankings were averaged to determine the total combined ranking. After studying the table below, also consider the intangibles. While I don't consider Pete Rose a superior fielder, to his credit, he won 2 Gold Gloves as an outfielder. His teammates winning Gold Gloves, Bench who won 10 and Morgan who won 5, are in the Hall of Fame, Foster and Perez didn't win any and are not. As far as base running, if you use stolen bases as a measure, Rose was adequate, but not superior. To me, while he was fun to watch (I admit I was a big Reds fan) and longevity is a big factor, by most fundamental and widely accepted statistical measures, he just wasn't as obvious a choice for the Hall of Fame as some make it seem. Sorry Pete!

Executive Books and articles about Bart Giamatti Giamatti, a lifelong Red Sox fan, came to prominence as the president of Yale University, where his tough dealing with the college's union favorably impressed baseball's owners. Also appreciated was his devotion to baseball's tradition. Named president of the NL in December 1986, he gained attention for his 30-day suspension of Pete Rose in 1988 after Rose, the Reds' manager, shoved umpire Dave Pallone. After succeeding Peter Ueberroth as Commissioner in April 1989, Giamatti's most famous decision once again involved Rose, whom he suspended for life for gambling. A few weeks later, Giammatti died of a massive heart attack. RELATED LINKS A. The settlement stated: "The Commissioner will not make any formal findings or determinations on any matters including without limitation the allegation that Peter Edward Rose bet on any Major League Baseball game." The settlement also stated, "Neither the Commissioner nor Peter Edward Rose shall be prevented by this agreement from making any public statement relating to this matter so long as no such public statement contradicts the terms of this agreement and resolution." PETE ROSE Baseball Player Pete Rose is one of the greatest professional baseball players in the history of the game and also one of the most controversial. Rose began playing professionally for the Cincinnati Reds in 1963, where he quickly earned the nickname "Charlie Hustle" for his work ethic and boundless enthusiasm. During his 24-year career he had many high points, including a career batting average of .303, a record-setting 4,256 hits, a 44 game hitting streak (1978) and three appearances in the World Series (twice with Cincinnati, 1975 and 1976, and once with the Philadelphia Phillies, 1980). Rose was all but guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame until 1989, when he was accused of betting on baseball. Although Rose denied it, the charges were proved and he was banned from baseball for life. He finally admitted that he had bet on baseball in his 2004 book, My Prison Without Bars

Enquirer News Update - Updated 5:04 p.m. Pete Rose admits betting on baseball
The Cincinnati Enquirer WHAT DO YOU THINK?
After more than 14 years of strong denials, Pete Rose has finally admitted he bet on baseball while he managed the Reds in the late 1980s. In a portion of an interview broadcast this morning on Good Morning America, Rose said: "It's time to clean the slate, it's time to take responsibility," Rose says in the interview. "I'm 14 years late." The full interview will be broadcast on ABC's "Primetime" Thursday night at 10. Excerpts of his forthcoming book, "My Prison Without Bars," will be in this week's Sports Illustrated, due out Wednesday. The book will be in stores Thursday. Rose was banned from baseball in 1989, and he hopes his confession now will end that ban and lead to his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame and possibly a return to managing in the Major Leagues. Rose has been discussing a possible end to baseball's ban against him with Commissioner Bud Selig for more than a year. It is believed Selig told Rose he must come clean and make a public confession that he bet on baseball. "We haven't seen the book. Until we read the book, there's nothing to comment on," Selig told The Associated Press on Sunday night.

Sunday, January 11, 2004 Readers' views on Pete Rose
The Enquirer published my letter, "A contrite Rose can enter Hall of Fame" (July 21),where I stated that had Pete readily admitted his wrong doing and spent these past decades serving as an example to teach kids that no one is above the rules, he would now be in the Hall of Fame. However, I am sad to say that Pete still does not get it. He is not contrite. He has merely learned that to confess at this time will be more expedient to his cause. I feel that he should stand as an example and never be allowed in the Hall of Fame. We are making history and neither talent nor celebrity should exempt anyone from following the rules and more importantly stepping up to the plate and taking your punishment like a man. A confession of expediency rather than of true contriteness is a greater wrongdoing. Kids learn best by example. Peggy Campbell,
