1) What was the case against Rose? Baseball started an investigation in February 1989 into allegations that Rose had been betting on sports, including baseball. These allegations came from one of Rose's friends, Paul Janszen, and bookie Ron Peters. (Both had been convicted of felony drug charges.) Both offered documentary evidence of Rose's betting to support their claims. Former federal prosecutor John Dowd was hired to conduct an investigation. The testimony of Janszen and Peters was corroborated by Rose's phone records and bank records, which mirror the activity they described. Dowd uncovered other evidence which indicated Rose had used other "runners" besides Janszen to place his bets. Dowd discovered evidence that Rose had placed bets with other bookies, including several with ties to organized crime. Dowd also discovered evidence of hundreds of mysterious financial transactions between Rose and these bookies.

http://www.evesmag.com/peterose.htm
Pete Rose, the All-Century Player exiled from baseball's hallowed halls. The Exile of Pete Rose By Pete Coutros Jim (Just Call Me Dorian) Gray has Pete Rose lined up in the cross-hairs. His finger's on the trigger, itching to squeeze off a round, reduce the old baseballer to a bleeding cadaver. But first, he demands that Rose fess up, spill his guts. For the viewing delectation of all those millions tuned into NBC for the opening game of the World Series in Atlanta. Exiled from the game 10 years ago for betting on baseball (did he bet on his team? against it? only the commissioner knows and he ain't talking), Rose has repeatedly fended off, danced around the subject in dozens of debates with the media. Debate, hell; inquisition is what Gray has in mind. He demands an apology, some evidence of contrition, self-flagellation with chains might be just the thing, provide a spark of excitement for NBC on a night that's going to end routinely and predictably with the Yankees squishing the home-standing Braves. En route to four straight, again. Ultimately, with some prodding from his bosses, Gray apologized for his boorish behavior. His

  • Rose/Giamatti Agreement - Text of the final agreement between Rose and Giamatti. This five page document was part of a fax sent to all Major League clubs at 9:00 AM EDT on August 24, 1989. A copy was obtained from the National Baseball Library in Cooperstown. Giamatti's Statement - The prepared remarks of Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti for the press conference announcing the agreement. Major League Rule 21 - Defines and describes "misconduct" and the applicable penalties. A copy of this rule is posted in every Major League clubhouse. Exhibits to the Dowd Report - available in PDF form. Includes bank and phone records, depositions of all key parties, betting records, and reports from independent investigators.
Physical Evidence
  • Betting Slip #1 of 3 - alleged to show Rose's bets for 4/8/87 and 4/9/87 Betting Slip #2 of 3 - alleged to show Rose's bets for 4/10/87 and 4/11/87 Check from Rose to Gioiosa - the smoking gun that links Rose to Ron Peters, the bookie Rose claimed he didn't know. Peters claimed he stopped taking Rose's bets because he owed $34,000. When Peters told him this, Rose exploded, claiming that he had given Tommy Gioiosa a check for that amount, and that Gioiosa must have stiffed them both. Peters said that Rose showed him a copy of this check as a gesture of good faith, and it turned up later when Rose turned over his bank records.

1973 Playoffs: Pete Rose vs. Bud Harrelson The scene was Shea Stadium, the third game of the 1973 National League playoffs, and the New York Mets were clobbering the Cincinnati Reds 9-2, looking to take a 2-1 lead in the best of five series. But though the game had long been decided, their was some excitement still to come. That’s they way it was when Pete Rose was on the field. In the fifth inning, trailing 9-2 ( Rusty Staub had homered in both the first and second innings for New York), Rose was on first when a ball was hit to the middle of the infield. Met shortstop Bud Harrelson made the force at second and crossed the bag ready top complete a double play, but Rose slid into him hard, taking out his legs. The two men ended up on top of each other in the middle of the infield dirt, rolling around like two cats in an alley. Rose ended up on top of Harrelson and soon the benches cleared and the field filled with Reds and Mets. The ensuing melee proved tame (as do most baseball brawls), though Cincinnati reliever Pedro Borbon did turn heads when he ripped apart a Met cap with his teeth. When calm was restored, the game continued. But in the bottom of the inning, as Rose took his position in left field, New York fans showed off their arms – pelting debris at the Cincinnati star. When a whiskey bottle whizzed past his head, Rose retreated to the dugout as manager
