Rose admits baseball bets in book
By wire services Published January 4, 2004 PHILADELPHIA - Pete Rose admits in his upcoming autobiography that he gambled on baseball, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Saturday. The New York Times reported Wednesday Rose admitted to betting on baseball at a meeting with commissioner Bud Selig. Rodale Inc., which is publishing My Prison Without Bars, said the book will go on sale Thursday. Cathy Gruhn, publicist for the Emmaus publishing company, declined to comment to the Inquirer on the book's contents. Selig did not comment Friday to the Inquirer. But the paper reported Saturday that Selig has not made a decision about Rose's application for reinstatement, and any missteps in the book could cost Rose. METS: The team reached a preliminary agreement with free-agent reliever Braden Looper on a $6.75-million, two-year contract. Looper, 29, had 28 saves for the World Series champion Florida Marlins last season.

Rose says he's sorry for stealing thunder
By wire services Published January 8, 2004 NEW YORK - Pete Rose insists he didn't plan to draw attention away from the elections of Dennis Eckersley and Paul Molitor to baseball's Hall of Fame. Rose's admission in his autobiography that he bet on baseball has been making news for more than a week, upsetting the Hall of Fame, which announced Tuesday that Eckersley and Molitor were its latest inductees. "I never intended to diminish the exciting news for these deserving players," Rose said in a statement Wednesday. Eckersley and Molitor accused Rose of bad timing. "It's a little disappointing in the timing because we can all see the attention it's getting," Molitor said. "I answered questions for an hour (Tuesday) but the only one that was used on the front page of USA Today was about Pete Rose."

1997 Rookies
By Tom Tippett,
October 29, 1997 To help you begin thinking about the upcoming rookie drafts in your Diamond Mind leagues (or other fantasy leagues, for that matter), here is a list of all players who made their major-league debut in 1997. Because many leagues do not allow you to draft a player before he appears in the major leagues, chances are these players will be available in your league's draft. Some of these guys will help you right away, while others are highly-touted comers who were called up in September for the first time. Last year, I scooped up Nomar Garciaparra with my first draft pick (even though he didn't play much in 1996), and this year's list contains several players who are expected to do the same next year. This is a great place to find the guys who can begin to turn your team around or who can help sustain that dynasty that you've put together.

Pete Rose's TV Test ESPN takes baseball's career hit leader to court. By Joshua David Mann CLASSES HAD LONG SINCE ADJOURNED FOR THE SUMMER, but on a recent Thursday afternoon, a chalkboard in Harvard Law School's Austin Hall sported a newly written question: "Pete Rose -> hall of fame?" Rose's banishment from baseball and its Hall of Fame were to be the centerpiece that evening of a mock trial, sponsored by ESPN, to be argued by former O. J. Simpson dream teammates Johnnie Cochran Jr. and Alan Dershowitz. At Harvard, Cochran would be the defense attorney, representing Rose and the case that he should be eligible for the Hall of Fame, while Dershowitz was to play the unfamiliar role of prosecutor, arguing that because Rose bet on baseball he should be permanently ineligible to join the sport's immortals in Cooperstown. The trial was to air "live" at 7 p.m., but there were two taping sessions: one in the afternoon, which featured the trial itself, and another later in the evening, which featured the verdict. Only the second session was broadcast live. The audience began gathering in the main foyer of Austin Hall around 1:15. A table loaded with brownies, lemon squares, and chocolate chip cookies greeted those who walked through the front doors, and because many working people appeared to be forsaking their lunch hour to attend, the table was getting a lot of attention. By 1:30, a sign had been placed on the table that read: "For Crew Only."

Bloom hasn't worn off for Brian Rose
By Eric Gongola, Standard-Times staff writer.
Nearly a year after signing a much celebrated minor-league contract with the Red Sox, Brian Rose has settled into relative obscurity, just another hired hand down on the farm and loving every minute of it.
"I'm having a blast. Some people have to sit in an office all day, and here I am doing what I love," says the former Dartmouth High School star.
Rose, a third-round pick in last spring's amateur draft, is honing his talents these days for the Red Sox's Single A affiliate in Battle Creek, Mich.
Success has made a sometimes painful adjustment period in the minor leagues much easier to take. After two shaky outings in early May that strapped the big right-hander with an astronomical earned-run average, Rose has rebounded in his last four starts.
"I've thrown a three-hitter and I've had a couple of one-run games," says Rose, who has whittled the ERA down to 5.00, with a record of 2-1. "I've also got a lot of strikeouts, which is surprising to me."
Following an extended spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., Rose figured to be assigned to Boston's Single A club in Utica, N.Y. To his genuine delight, he was shipped to Battle Creek of the Midwestern League.

All the way
Dartmouth's Brian Rose has made it to Fenway Park
By Steven Krasner and Bob Dick, New England Sports Service
BOSTON The future has arrived for the Boston Red Sox for at least one day.
Highly touted pitching prospect Brian Rose of Dartmouth has been promoted from Pawtucket and will start tonight's game against the Anaheim Angels, the nightcap portion of a doubleheader at Fenway Park.
But unless Boston's roster changes in the next few days, tonight's outing could be a cameo appearance for the right-hander, with Rose being handed a return ticket to Pawtucket no matter how well he fares in his major-league debut.
"We needed a pitcher for the second game of the doubleheader against the Angels, and it was his turn to pitch," said Boston general manager Dan Duquette, noting that tonight would have been Rose's turn in the Pawsox starting rotation. "But if our rotation remains intact, then we've brought him up to pitch one game."
There is one outside factor that could contribute to a longer stay for Rose, aside from the 13-4 record and 2.84 ERA he had achieved at the time of his promotion yesterday.
The Red Sox may be able to move a pitcher, possibly either Heathcliff Slocumb or Tom Gordon, before the July 31 trading deadline, which could open a spot in the rotation for Rose.
