Alex Rodriguez taking his position at 3rd base at the beginning of a new inning Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez (born July 27 ), nicknamed A-Rod , is widely regarded as one of the best players in Major League Baseball today and at a young age is already being talked about among the all-time greats. Starting his major league career with the Seattle Mariners , he signed an unprecidented free agent deal with the Texas Rangers , before being traded to the New York Yankees . In he became the youngest player in major league history to reach 300 home runs November 17 , 2003 Rodriguez received the American League Most Valuable Player award, his first ever. It was the second time in MLB history that a player of a team finishing last in the league was given the award ( Andre Dawson also won the award for the last place Chicago Cubs ). The following month the Rangers tried unsuccessfully to trade Rodriguez and his hefty salary to the Boston Red Sox . The Players Association blocked the deal, however, because the Red Sox wanted to cut Rodriguez's salary. Then on January 25 , he was named captain of the Rangers ball club. Less than three weeks later, he was traded to the Yankees, the first reigning MVP to be traded in the history of Major League Baseball. He was put at third base in New York to allow Yankees captain

ALEX RODRIGUEZ Baseball Player Name at birth: Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez Alex Rodriguez signed a 10-year, $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers in 2000, making him the highest-salaried player in professional sports history. Rodriguez played his first major league baseball game at age 18 and became the starting shortstop for the Seattle Mariners at age 20. Nicknamed "A-Rod," he hit .358 with 36 homers in 1996, his first full season in the majors. His power, defensive skills, charisma and fan-friendly Hispanic heritage made him an attractive free agent after the 2000 season, and Texas owner Tom Hicks signed Rodriguez to the unprecedented $252 million deal. Rodriguez played well for the Rangers (winning the American League MVP award in 2003), but the team finished last in its division for three straight years, and some felt that Rodriguez's mammoth contract had hobbled the team. In 2004 Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees, where he moved to third base to play alongside Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter
Extra credit : Rodriguez bats right-handed, throws right-handed, and wears uniform #13... Seattle made him the first pick in the first round of the 1993 amateur draft... His first appearance in the majors was on 8 July 1994... In 1998 he had 42 homers and 46 stolen bases, making him the third-ever member of baseball's "40-40 club" (

a fine start
this season—but in New York, Kenny Rogers was considered a loser thinks In the first inning, the Stadium crowd gave Alfonso Soriano a rousing ovation With two men on in the third Soriano removed from the game Rogers got into further trouble, allowing a single and walking two to load the bases. But Tony Clark grounded out weakly to the mound to end the inning. However, in the fourth, Rogers left a fastball up and over the plate to Enrique Wilson who pounced on it for a solo shot to left. He came back and retired Miguel Cairo (in for Jeter) and Williams before Alex Rodriguez hit a moon shot deep to left which tied the game. Rogers tried to go up and in on Rodriguez, but the Yankee third baseman used his bat speed and incredible strength to muscle the ball for a homer. Two pitches later, Rogers went down-and-away and Gary Sheffield went fishing, smacking a loud homer to left. Back-to-back jacks and everything was starting to feel rosey in Yankee land. In the bottom of the fifth, Hideki Matsui lead off with a homer that landed half-way up the right-centerfield bleachers, another shot. Buck Showalter sprinted from the dugout and pointed toward his bullpen with his left hand. It was an almost comic gesture. Showalter looked furious at himself that he had allowed Rogers to pitch to another batter.

Yankee Preview Thursday: Alex Rodriguez
Top Billin By Cliff Corcoran
When my gracious host, Alex Belth, first asked me to contribute a guest column to his spring training preview, he assigned me a profile of then Yankee second baseman Alfonso Soriano . I cranked out about 3,000 words and was in the home stretch when, on the day after Valentine’s Day, Soriano was shipped to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Alex Rodriguez . Despite having spent the preceding week vigorously gathering evidence with which to defend the then 26-year-old Soriano against his critics, I was no less delighted at the news of the trade. The Yankees had just picked up the best all-around player in the majors and a man who is challenging for the title of the best shortstop in the history of the game. Well, that was my initial reaction. As the trade sank in, official word came down that Rodriguez would be moving to third base, and I began to picture Miguel Cairo as the Yankees starting second baseman, I began to think about A-Rod’s place in history a bit more deeply, as well as his ranking among the best active players in the game. The three primary questions I had were: 1) How exactly does Rodriguez measure up against the greatest shortstops in history, and how would this status change should his move to third be permanent?

Alex Rodriguez
Baseball player Baseball player Alex Rodriguez has been inspiring fans for years with his style of play. He became a household name when he signed a $252-million contract with the Texas Rangers in December of 2001. Rodriguez has won numerous awards and is known for his versatile talent on the field and his good conduct off it. Rodriguez, known as "A-Rod" to his fans, was born in New York City and lived briefly in the Dominican Republic before his family moved to Kendall, Florida, a suburb of Miami. His father, Victor, had played professional baseball in the Dominican Republic and taught the game to Rodriguez. However, when Rodriguez was ten years old, his father left the family. Rodriguez told Ben Kaplan in Sports Illustrated for Kids, "It was hard. I did my best to help out around the house and bring home good grades to make my mom proud." He became an honor student and a star shortstop at Miami's Westminster Christian School. He did his best to play like his hero, baseball great Cal Ripken of the Baltimore Orioles; he kept a life-sized poster of Ripken on the wall in his bedroom. Joined Seattle Mariners Westminster's baseball coach, Rich Hoffman, became like a second father to Rodriguez when he made the varsity team in tenth grade. Hoffman encouraged Rodriguez to improve his hitting and to lift weights to become stronger. By his junior season, he was batting .450, helping Westminster to win the 1992 national high school championship. In his senior year, he batted .505 and stole 35 bases in 35 attempts.

Alex Rodriguez, the New Yankee
Gothamist loves George Steinbrenner . Why? Because he's so insanely rich, he just goes out and get the most expensive players. Yes, Alex Rodriguez is that good and the nearly completed deal is the stuff of fantasies , but let's face it, the real value is it lets the Yankees naysayers call them the " Evil Empire ." And there's nothing like being envied and reviled. That's why we live in New York. Red Sox fans are upset - excellent. Posted by Jen Chung in Sports

I find it interesting that Jeter is staying at short and A-Rod is moving (most likely to third), as A-Rod is a much better defensive shortstop than Jeter ever was. Jen Feb 15, 2004 8:46 PM

So do thousands of Yankee fans. Within four days after owner George Steinbrenner acquired the shortstop nicknamed A-Rod in February from the Texas Rangers for second baseman Alfonso Soriano and a player to be named later, the Yankees sold 104,000 season tickets worth $2 million.
Last year, A-Rod tied for the major-league lead in home runs with 47, led the American League with 124 runs scored and a .600 slugging percentage, drove in 118 runs, batted .298 and earned his second consecutive Gold Glove for defensive excellence.

Talented shortstop is fascinated with education and has earned high grades as one of game's top stars SAY THE NAME "LEONARDO" around Alex Rodriguez, and you'll get a story about da Vinci instead of DiCaprio. When he's not playing shortstop for the Seattle Mariners, Rodriguez, 24, likes to jet ski, listen to Frank Sinatra and hang out with his three dogs. But what really blows A-Rod away these days is da Vinci, the 15th-century genius who studied astronomy, anatomy. geometry, botany and geology while squeezing in time to paint the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. A book on da Vinci sits on Rodriguez's bedside table: "He wrote his notes backward so that people wouldn't take his ideas," he says. "People like me would have to put them up to a mirror to read them. He says you can learn seven facts every second for the rest of your life. That means we are using only two percent of our brain. It fascinates me. I like education. My dream was always to get a degree from Harvard or Yale, but I wasn't that smart."

IN THE FUTURE, BASEBALL paleontologists will gather to discuss the most remarkable events of the early 21st century. They will study fossilized spike prints, old gloves preserved in amber and petrified bats. They will proclaim it the A-rodozoic age, the time when meek little role players emerged as the most feared and well-paid creatures on the landscape. From the Nomarasarus to Jeter Raptor to the most ferocious of them all: Tyrannosaurus Alex. It is the era of the shortstop.
