Here's to John Rocker! I MUST ADMIT THAT I NEVER HEARD JOHN ROCKER'S NAME before tonight, but he made a good impression already. I think it is great fun watching the leftists, no matter whether they call themselves liberal or conservative, falling all over themselves trying find new ways of being outraged at John Rocker, a relief pitch for the Atlanta Braves baseball team. The author of the web page Hoffstetter's Jerk of the Week at www.jerkoftheweek.com Let us look at what this young man said. He gave an interview to the Sport's Illustrated magazine, and in that interview he said about New York: Imagine having to take the 7 train to [Shea Stadium] looking like you're [in] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing. He went on to also say: "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners," he said. "You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?" I fail to see one thing that John Rocker said that was false. Every word he said was true. The truth as we should know by now has nothing to do with liberals and what they value. Imagine the gall of this ball player getting up and stating that he would like to live and work around people who speak English as a first language. Imagine this guy who would rather work and live around Nonasians, and even White folks perhaps. Now is that not really scary? It must be, because you can see the terror in the eyes of all the professional Media Lord puppets tonight. They all want to make sure that they take their own personal little verbal piece out of the reputation of John Rocker, to demonstrate how solidly they are on the diversity bandwagon. They want to make sure that the Media Lords have no doubt at all about the political correctness of their own person position. Nobody is wandering anywhere near the admission that John Rocker just may have a point in what he says.

Nobody is a jerk anymore. They just need counseling.
This week, Bud Selig, the Commissioner of Baseball, ordered Atlanta Braves relief pitcher John Rocker to undergoe psychological testing.
Mr. Rocker made some malicious remarks to a reporter for Sports Illustrated magazine last month, saying he would never play for a team in New York City, because he didn't want to ride a subway train to the ballpark in which he might have to rub up against gays, AIDS patients, and immigrants, Asian women and a black teammate.
Maybe the Braves keep Mr. Rocker in the bullpen because a doghouse is too small.

John Rocker and the triumph of the therapeutic Braves Answer Questions About Rocker
New York Times
January 9, 2000 By The Associated Press KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) The Atlanta Braves came Sunday to sign autographs. Instead, they wound up answering questions about John Rocker. Outfielder Andruw Jones, shortstop Walt Weiss and manager Bobby Cox were among those taking part in the promotion at the Braves' spring training site, Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. ``It's disappointing,'' Jones said of Rocker's remarks. ``But I lived with Rocker for one year and he always was kind of crazy, but not to say stuff like that. I don't know if it came from his heart, or it came from his head or just stupidness.'' Rocker told Sports Illustrated he would never play for a New York team because he didn't want to ride a train ``next to some queer with AIDS.'' He also said, ``I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. ... How the hell did they get in this country?'' He called a black teammate a ``fat monkey,'' mocked the driving skills of Asian women and insulted single mothers. Rocker apologized for the remarks published last month and said he was not a racist.

Baseball Is Off Its Rocker
The Wall Street Journal By Sally Satel Baseball's latest bad boy is Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker. Last month he spoke disparagingly of foreigners, homosexuals and a black teammate in Sports Illustrated, and now there are cries that he should be dumped. But before Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig decides what to do with Mr. Rocker, he wants to hear from the mental health profession. On Friday, the pitcher had his first mandatory evaluation with psychiatrists. Psychiatrists? What is our role in helping Mr. Selig reprimand Mr. Rocker? The commissioner should decide what behavior the sport finds unacceptable, devise a sanction and implement it. Period. By effectively saying that anyone who uses bigoted language is mentally ill, Mr. Selig (who decided in cooperation with the Players Association to obtain the evaluation) is medicalizing behavior that we rightly object to on moral grounds. By asking psychiatrists to help him reprimand Mr. Rocker, Mr. Selig is hiding behind our couch. I cannot help suspect that, deep down, Mr. Selig and Company know that sending the 25-year-old Mr. Rocker to the shrink is an empty gesture. Perhaps they figure that a needless trip to the psychiatrist will be the first in a longer series of punitive steps. But the gesture still sends a disturbing message to young baseball fans: Offensive behavior is actually a deep pathology, one that individuals cannot control.

Where Is the Left in John Rocker's Hour of Need? By Brian Carnell Thursday, January 13, 2000 The only thing The Nation did was one of Calvin Trillin's annoying little poems about Rocker. It is interesting how the people who usually whine and moan whenever employers fire or discipline employees for their political or social beliefs disappear when the discipline is directed at people who hold views diametrically opposed to the Left. Imagine, for example, that Rocker in his Sports Illustrated interview had decided to emulate NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and suggested he no longer wanted to appear on the field during the singing of the national anthem, and as a result Bud Selig had ordered psychological testing for Rocker. Is there really any doubt that magazines like The Nation would immediately run to Rocker's defense and talk about the horrors of corporate suppression of free speech (in fact Abdul-Rauf had many left-liberal defenders when the NBA suspended him). Instead the general consensus seems to be that Major League Baseball is doing a good thing by disciplining Rocker for his private conversation with a reporter during baseball's off-season. That's fine, but remember folks that you can't have it both ways. You can't applaud baseball for taking action against Rocker and then turn around and say an employer who might discipline or fire a worker because of his Left views and activism is overstepping the bounds of the employer-employee relationship.

John Rocker (2/11/00) Atlanta Pitcher John Rocker as quoted in Sports Illustrated
  • On ever playing for a New York team: "I would retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing." On New York City itself: "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?"
Observations:
  • This country goes absolutely crazy whenever a bigoted statement is made to the mass media. Based upon the reaction, you would think that John Rocker had degraded Jesus from the pulpit of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. Maybe its because we live in the South or in Texas, but his comments are similar to what is said every day in Decatur, Texas, over coffee. Come on, admit it.

Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan March 1 2000: John Rocker: Respectable? OK, I just had to send this to the Sporting News "Fan's View" column today: So, John Rocker's suspension has been trimmed in half, and his fine cut from a whopping $20,000 to a paltry $500. But just because Rocker's official penalty has been lightened, doesn't mean his road to respectability is any easier. I was going to say "road BACK TO respectability," but let's face it, Rocker was not a respectable character before this. If he was, then he wouldn't have been in the situation of having batteries and harsh words thrown at him by New York fans. The question now is, can Rocker survive without his "bad boy" image? Was the pumped-up snorting bull act necessary for those 95 mph fastballs? Or can Rocker still deliver the goods on the field even while changing his attitude off it? Just imagine Rocker as an elder statesman of baseball, able to look back on a long and storied career and maybe even comment intelligently on the "mistakes" of his youth. Think it will happen? Only if John Rocker can change "in his heart"and in the minds of those watching. If Rocker wants to gain respectability now, there are three places he needs to repair relations.

MLB and Braves Are Off Their Rockers
By RANDY SAMUELSON As many know, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker made several controversial remarks about New York City in a December Sports Illustrated interview. His comments, dealing with racial issues, consisted of observations about certain subpopulations in New York City. For example, he commented about Times Square’s Puerto Ricans and Cubans inability to speak English and the “queers with AIDS” on the Number 7 train to Shea Stadium. His opinions sent shock-waves through Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves organization, reviving racial issues that Major League Baseball has long tried to suppress. Like any other American, John Rocker has the right to speak his mind on any issue he wishes and to hold any opinion he so desires. Housed in the First Amendment, these free speech rights are the same rights liberals love to reference regarding art, journalism, and speech. Perhaps the way he phrased his comments could have been more tactful, but he broke no law by saying them.

It's a hard call to make. I personally feel that the whole story was beaten to death. I am not willing to judge Rocker based on one interview where the reporter did his best to goad the young man into making 'big bad' statements. I also think it's pathetic that people have wanted to do him harm based on his right to free speech. Before people go after Rocker, go after David Duke you morons! Rocker screwed up - nothing new for a baseball player. Al Martin beat the crap out of his wife but the story has faded. Bobby Choiunard waved a gun at his wife (which he'd done before) and THAT story vaporized. Pedro Astacio pleaded GUILTY to smacking his wife around and the story went POOF until they said they'd deport him, as all immigrants convicted of a felony can be, then the press kind of noticed. You know the rules: If it bleeds, it leads and Rocker is a bleeding mess.

In America, you have the right to be a moron. It's inalienable. That's why God gave us Jerry Glanville and pro wrestling. All In The Family. It was all about a moron. It revolved around a moron. It may have been the best show in the history of shows. Archie Bunker was a moron. Also a crank, a bigot and a homophobe. That was the point. A. Bunker said incredibly dumb things. We laughed. No one took him seriously. John Rocker, Atlanta Braves relief pitcher, is A. Bunker incarnate. He says the same incredibly dumb things. He is a moron. Why aren't we laughing?

From Shoeless to Clueless
Two Steps Forward And One Step Back
By Joe Kuras
Baseball in the 1900's is now history. The All-Century lists have been compiled and archived. When I think of the past 100 years in baseball, two events strike me as most significant: The Black Sox scandal of 1919 and the integration of minorities into professional baseball. We've come a long way. Baseball repaired the damage done after Chicago threw the World Series and moved forward, thanks to charismatic players like Babe Ruth. And baseball moved forward again, beginning with Jackie Robinson, by allowing minorities into the professional game. These two events seem to have taken us two giant steps forward in the 1900's. But just how far have we come? When John Rocker made his hideous comments to Sports Illustrated regarding gays, minorities and felons, we took one step back. Fifty years after Jackie Robinson entered professional baseball, blacks and whites were telling us that we still had a long way to go before minorities would be totally accepted within our national pastime. John Rocker pointed out to us that they were right. Three words describe the common thread that has run through baseball during the past 100 years: Money, power and greed.

Psychological Testing and Enlightenment Therapy for John Rocker
    by Sam Smith
    January 7, 2000
First John Rocker proved to the world that he was an idiot. Now it looks like Bud Selig's turn, but there's probably more to the story than meets the eye. According to the Associated Press, the Atlanta Braves pitcher has been "ordered by baseball to undergo psychological tests before deciding whether to punish the outspoken reliever for remarks he made disparaging gays, minorities and immigrants." Selig, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, says he will await the results of the evaluation before deciding on any disciplinary action. In case you've been off-planet, Rocker recently made a variety of racist, xenophobic, and homophobic remarks to a Sports Illustrated reporter interviewing him for a feature story. His willingness to say these things to
