John Rocker throwing more than just pitches
Last December, an article in Sports Illustrated profiling Atlanta Braves' relief pitcher John Rocker was greeted by a storm of anger and controversy over several overtly racist and homophobic comments he had made in an interview with SI reporter Jeff Pearlman. Although I agree that Rocker's comments were, as Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said, "reprehensible and completely inexcusable," I believe the reactions to them have been overblown and inappropriate. It must be understood that Rocker's comments were not isolated nor were they unprovoked; they came as the latest assault in an old feud he has with New York fans. Rocker describes himself as "a backwoods ballplayer from south Georgia." This rural background, his confessed stupidity, and his opinions about people of racial or sexual orientation different from his own may have helped to make him a favorite target for the fans, particularly Mets fans. The animosity between Rocker and Mets fans is deep rooted and feeds on the prejudices and lack of self-restraint of both parties. During each of Rocker's many games at Shea Stadium, a war has raged between him and the fans. As he walked onto the field, fans would hit him with everything from beer to batteries to bottles to quarters, and he would respond with ridiculous antics, which included spitting at Mets fans, flipping fans the middle finger and throwing balls at the net separating the fans from the field.

The Rocker Ruckus
By Dan Holmes, December 9, 1999
According to Major League Baseball, you can hit your wife but you can't call her names.
In the December issue of Sports Illustrated , outspoken Braves' reliever John Rocker slams homosexuals, Asians, women, New Yorkers, foreigners, Mets fans, drivers, some of his teammates, single Moms, and well...let's just say he slammed almost everybody.
The story paints Rocker as a bitter, angry, impatient young man with little class and even less intelligence. He's basically a spoiled kid with a great arm.
Baseball immediately reacted with outrage. Hank Aaron ripped Rocker's remarks, as did Brave outfielder Brian Jordan. Manager Bobby Cox expressed dismay, as did fellow Braves pitcher Tom Glavine.
Of course Rocker's remarks are stupid. In much the same way Marge Schott made herself look ignorant when the former Reds owner commented on Hitler, the Jews, World War II and blacks, Rocker showed his idiocy as soon as he opened his mouth for the SI story. The problem with baseball's reaction, as was the problem when Schott made her remarks, is that it's unnecassary and self-serving, not to mention highly hypocritical. In fact it's almost certainly unconstitutional. MLB has no right to order John Rocker to have psychological testing. No more than your employer or school has the right to submit you to drug testing or psychological testing based on something you

Did baseball break anti-discrimination law by suspending racist John Rocker?
WASHINGTON, DC Major League Baseball may have violated federal law by suspending John Rocker because if the loudmouth pitcher's bigoted opinions are caused by a "mental illness," then he's protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Libertarian Party noted today. "It sounds crazy, but if John Rocker is a crazy bigot, then it's a federal crime to discriminate against him in any way," said Steve Dasbach, the party's national director. "Even more amazing, if John Rocker is crazy, then Major League Baseball must make 'reasonable accommodations' for his prejudices which could include keeping foreigners and homosexuals away from him so he can continue to pitch."

Baseball, Assholes and the Constitution
Joe Lockard
Wednesday, February 2 2000, 10:28 AM
Atlanta Braves relief pitcher John Rocker is an asshole. There's just no denying it, and Rocker himself is in the middle of that sad discovery. The jeering Mets fans got it right on this one. When Rocker next sets foot in the Braves locker room, he'll have to face his teammates with apologies for his insulting comments in Sports Illustrated . When Rocker sets foot on the playing field, he'll face the contempt of baseball's public. If the team management trades their pitcher to the local dirtball league for two cents, that would be justice. Local community groups in Atlanta have called for Rocker's release and listening to their voices might be worthwhile. Rocker deserves every one of the problems he has created for himself with his loud, ignorant mouth. What Rocker does not deserve is the unilateral cancellation of his constitutional free speech protections by a private commercial organization, Major League Baseball. For those who do not follow the sports pages, MLB has fined Rocker $20,000 and suspended him until May 1 for comments that insulted immigrants, blacks, Asians and gays. The players' association will take the case to arbitration, arguing that Rocker is being punished for free speech off the baseball field. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig made his decision under the "best interests of baseball" clause, which allows him industrial powers of which other monopolists can only dream. Listen to Selig's sermon: "Major league baseball takes seriously its role as an American institution and the important social responsibility that goes with it. We will not dodge our responsibility. Mr. Rocker should understand that his remarks offended practically every element of society and brought dishonor to himself, the Atlanta Braves and major league baseball. The terrible example set by Mr. Rocker is not what our great game is about and, in fact, is a profound breach of the social compact we hold in such high regard."

E-Mail This Article Published on Monday, February 7, 2000 in the New York Observer John Rocker Is The Latest Hero For The Web’s Far-Right by William Berlind John Rocker, the Atlanta Braves’ relief pitcher whose opinions about New York and its citizenry has earned him a monthlong suspension from baseball, may seem to be one of the sporting world’s great villains. But if baseball’s commissioner, Bud Selig, really believes that Mr. Rocker’s comments "offended practically every element of society," he doesn’t know his audience. In fact, Mr. Rocker has become a hero to thousands of non-New Yorkers who have made him a digital poster boy for on-line racists, bigots and New York-haters. For example, at Stormfront.org, the Web’s largest and oldest white supremacist organization (now there’s a claim to fame!), chat rooms are buzzing with hundreds of tributes to Mr. Rocker, who made news in December by castigating New York’s gays, immigrants and single mothers. One chat room participant wrote a poem entitled "Off Your Rocker?" The poem’s sentiments can be summed up in four lines: "So you think that the country’s becoming/ A little bit over-exotic./ If you were a baseball player,/ They’d suspect that you were psychotic." Not the sort of writing they teach in graduate school, although it does make its point clear. Another participant in the chat session said that "what the Jews and liberals fear the most, they fear the truth … What ‘we’ need to do is support John Rocker …" The on-line magazine

by Michael Peirce When the ninth inning roles around, it’s time to hold an advantage, or start a rally. Three hitters up and three hitters down, which happens a lot with Rocker, can be critical. He strikes out well over one hitter per inning pitched. He looks like a guy you could sit next to in a pub and have a nice chat. Although, he might challenge you to arm wrestle! It is very obvious indeed why Atlanta fans like Rocker. What is not as obvious is why everybody with a word processor and a liberal bent has been outdoing each other to damn Rocker and the Atlanta fans as a very sinister group indeed. It’s astonishing. Atlanta is not heaven on earth, but we didn’t need Rudy Giuliani’s storm troops to be able to walk our streets. We are a friendly town. Yes we carry guns, many of us do that. But don’t worry, unlike Northern guns ours do not jump up and start firing on their own. That apparently happens a lot in New York, where honest taxpayers are unarmed, and strangely enough, still get shot now and then. Compare our shootings in Atlanta to those in any other city, and you’ ll find that one, there are not that many, and two: the loser in the gunfight is not always the crime victim. Heh heh.

ATLANTA (AP) Nothing less than John Rocker's immediate firing will satisfy the gay and minority activists who stood outside Turner Field on Thursday to send a message to the Atlanta Braves.
Trading or suspending him will not be enough punishment for the relief pitcher, whose incendiary comments about minorities and homosexuals have enraged millions, the activists said. They want him out of baseball for good.
"There may be some room for redemption, but not as an Atlanta Brave," said Michael Langford, president of the United Youth-Adult Conference. "We encourage him to enter his resignation right now and go into an early retirement."
The civic groups and a member of the Atlanta City Council delivered a letter Thursday to Braves owner Ted Turner and general manager John Schuerholz. It asked for Rocker's immediate firing and for a meeting with Braves officials.

Mark's View: Can John be Rocked by Baseball? New York, January 15, 2000 Like most other human beings, I found Atlanta Braves' relief pitcher John Rocker's comments in Sports llustrated about people of color, foreigners, homosexuals and New York City to be offensive. And in keeping with the long, tormented racial history of baseball, these remarks could hardly have been music to commissioner Bud Selig's ears. Baseball ordered Rocker to undergo psychological evaluation. I am not an expert in these matters, but I don't know if these statements evidence psychological problems, rather than social ignorance. And if it is determined that Rocker needs "help," would that exonerate him for the remarks he made? It should not and Rocker should receive all the criticism and booing he justly deserves. The next question is harder, from an ethical view. Can his employers, the Braves and Major League Baseball, suspend him for those statements? Should an employer have the right to punish an employer from expressing views albeit appalling outside of his workplace? Major League Baseball's Powers According to the New York Times

Mark's View: It's Baseball Whose Rocking New York, February 2, 2000 Yes, I know John Rocker is a jerk. Yes, he comes across as a bigot. And, yes, his "apology" interview with Peter Gammons was as convincing as an aging totalitarian dictator's concern for human rights. Nevertheless, the 30-day suspension ordered by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig raises very troubling questions ethical as well as legal. In fact, there are two distinct issues involved. First, can Selig take any disciplinary action for offensive statements made after the season concluded and not in any official capacity? If so, then is the punishment excessive as compared to other disciplinary rulings? The MLB Players' Association has filed a grievance and an arbitrator will make the determination. The second question is easier. All the arbitrator has to do is to compare this punishment for a statement, not an action with other determinations. Rocker's suspension, the longest in modern times for a non-drug offense, becomes severe in comparison with other recent actions. When Roberto Alomar spat at an umpire, his suspension was five games (served at the beginning of the next season who he would not miss a playoff game). When Albert Belle assaulted a fan by throwing a ball in his chest, his sanctions was seven games. Both more egregious in that they involved improper physical harm while the player was at work. In Rocker's case, baseball wanted to make a "statement" in enacting this punishment. I can easily see the arbitrator concluding that the "statement" was excessive.
