White House Dream Team: Jackie Roosevelt Robinson
Jackie Robinson Jackie Robinson was a pioneer in desegregating baseball. He broke through racial barriers to become one of the most historically-significant baseball players ever when he became the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues in the 20th Century. Jackie, whose full name was Jack Roosevelt Robinson, was born in Grady County, Georgia to Mallie and Jerry Robinson on January 31, 1919. His middle name was chosen to honor former President Theodore Roosevelt. When Jackie was a year old, his mother moved her five children to Pasadena, California to start a new life. From a young age, Jackie loved to read and play sports. He was a regular visitor to the La Pintoresca branch of the Pasadena Public library. Jackie was good at sports, and he was very competitive while playing children's games such as dodge ball. Jackie's role model was his brother Mack, who placed second to Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. He followed in his brother's footsteps by excelling in track as well as basketball, football and tennis in high school and college. Jackie's reading ability allowed him to finish high school and attend Pasadena Junior College, where he became the leadoff batter and star athlete for the school's baseball team. His talent led him to UCLA, where he earned letters in four sports. He excelled in football, track, basketball, swimming and tennis. He won the 1940 NCAA long-jump title.

JACKIE ROBINSON Baseball Player Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in baseball's major leagues in the modern era. Only white players were accepted in the major leagues until 1947, when Robinson was called up to join the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson's excellent play, and his role in breaking the color barrier, led to his 1962 induction as the first African-American in baseball's Hall of Fame.

Jack Roosevelt Robinson January 31 October 24 ) became the first African American Major League Baseball player of the modern era in . The significance of this event in U.S. history is observed by the retirement by each Major League team of his uniform number, 42. Jackie Robinson Born in Cairo, Georgia , Robinson was a football and baseball star at the University of California in Los Angeles, where he played with Kenny Washington - who would become one of the first black players in the National Football League since the early 1930s. After serving in the military during World War II , Robinson played baseball for a while for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro American League . There, he was noticed by a scout working for Branch Rickey Rickey was the club president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers , and had the secret goal of signing the Negro Leagues' top players to the team. Although there was no official ban on blacks in organized baseball, previous attempts at signing black ballplayers had been thwarted by league officials and rival clubs in the past, and so Rickey operated under cover. His scouts were told that they were seeking players for a new all-black league Rickey was forming; not even the scouts knew his true objective. Robinson drew national attention when Rickey selected him from a list of promising candidates and signed him. Robinson was assigned to play for the Dodgers' minor-league affiliate in

J ackie R obinson is a legendary figure and his name is now synonymous with the desegregation and redefinition of professional sports. Yet, our collective knowledge of the historical process that created this American icon, has been reduced to an occasional "color commentary." Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey are forever linked in American history. Rickey understood the psyche of white America. While Rickey's motives are still unclear, history has proven that his "great experiment" to integrate baseball, ultimately had less to do with baseball and more to do with challenging deep seated attitudes about race. The process had to be systematic, and Jackie Robinson not only had to have all the required physical and emotional assets, he had to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices.
Sam Lacy
, The AFRO-American's sports editor from 1944 through the present, confirms that while Jackie Robinson was not the most talented black player in the Negro Leagues , he was the best choice for integrating the Major Leagues . Like Rickey, Mr. Lacy believed that Jackie's early experiences playing and working with whites at

In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League ball in half a century. Though he shattered the national pastime’s unwritten color barrier, the 28-year-old Georgia native quietly endured constant heckling, on and off the field. Eventually, people became accustomed to seeing the Brooklyn Dodgers field the grandson of a slave at second base. That’s when the team's management gave Robinson the green light to be himself: proud and outspoken (he had nearly been court-martialed by the U.S. Army in 1944 for refusing to sit in the back of a bus). Following his retirement, Robinson pressed the Kennedy Administration to enact civil-rights legislation, telling the then-president: "We're going use whatever voice we have to awaken our people." As Major League Baseball’s director of education, Sharon Robinson is keeping that promise through a grammar-school program that she created and manages called "Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life." Initiated in 1998 in eight Major-League cities, the program will be expanded to the leagues’ remaining cities next year. Robinson participates in regional workshops, training teachers to serve as program "advocates," and eventually wants to introduce a Spanish-language version of Breaking Barriers.

U.S. Honors Baseball Great Jackie Robinson
By David Pitts
USIA Staff Writer Washington Few people can claim to have played a pivotal role in changing their country for the better. One American who earned that distinction during his rather brief lifetime was Jackie Robinson, the first black player to break the color barrier in U.S. major league baseball. The National Museum of American History is commemorating the occasion the day Robinson joined the then Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 with the opening of an exhibit entitled "Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Major League Baseball." The exhibit, dedicated to Robinson's fight for racial justice as a ballplayer and a man, will run indefinitely and is one of many tributes occurring around the country this week. At a news conference April 14, Museum Director Spencer Crewe said: "Few stories are as inspiring as that of Jackie Robinson. His life is an illustration of one man's ability to generate great change." Visitors will see Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers uniform shirt, autographed baseballs, and photographs highlighting his career as well as descriptions of landmark events in his life.

BaseballLibrary.com by The Idea Logical Company, Inc. Submissions Memories of Jackie Robinson by Sam Person (Bonita Springs, FL) A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info Certainly, this is no April Fool's story, but a reminder of a man who did so much to change baseball - and America - forever. An item in "BaseballLibrary.com" noted "55 years ago today (on April 1, 1947 Branch Rickey deflects pressure on Jackie Robinson by keeping him in Montreal, although it is clear the contending Dodgers can use the 1946 International League batting king." The rest, as they say, is history. Jackie Robinson did come up in 1947 and became the Rookie of The Year - an accomplishment that was an indication of the greatness to follow. Jackie Robinson's contributions to baseball as a player are given testimony by his election to the Hall of Fame. Equally important, however, was what the act of breaking the color line by Robinson and Branch Rickey contributed to the opening of American society. Have no doubt that the coming of Jackie Robinson was as significant a single step as any other that has ever affected American life.
