Jackie Robinson: An American Hero By Maury Allen LOS ANGELES DODGERS Jackie Robinson takes off from third and steals home in one of the most dazzling feats of World Series history! Game One, The 1955 World Series, 8th inning, the Brooklyn Dodgers trailing the Yankees 6 to 4! [The Dodgers won the Series!] Jackie Robinson reporting to the Brooklyn Dodgers from the minor league Montreal Royals, 1947. By Maury Allen The game of baseball is about runs, hits and errors, 70 homers by Mark McGwire and seven no hitters by Nolan Ryan, a .367 lifetime mark by Ty Cobb and 511 wins by Cy Young. It is about more than 15,000 people who have made it to the big leagues from Hank Aaron in alphabetical order to Dutch Zwilling over the last 130 years of organized record keeping. It is about people who get an instant moment of fame, not even Andy Warhol's 15 minutes, such as Moonlight Graham, a one gamer for the 1905 New York Giants until W.A. Kinsella made him famous in Field of Dreams , and Walter Alston with an at bat for the Cardinals in 1936. Only a Brooklyn Dodger World Series win in 1955 and a brilliant Hall of Fame managerial career saved him from lifelong obscurity. It is also about the recognition of the judges, the writers of baseball and the recognition of the peers, the players of the game.

A Letter from Jackie Robinson: Civil Rights Advocate
"Life is not a spectator sport. . . . If you're going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion you're escaping your life." Jackie Robinson, 1964 Jackie Robinson continued to champion the cause of civil rights after he left baseball. Having captured the attention of the American public in the ballpark, he now delivered the message that racial integration in every facet of American society would enrich the nation, just as surely as it had enriched the sport of baseball. Every American President who held office between 1956 and 1972 received letters from Jackie Robinson expressing varying levels of rebuke for not going far enough to advance the cause of civil rights. Indifferent to party affiliation and unwilling to compromise, he measured a President's performance by his level of commitment to civil rights. Robinson's stand was firm and nonnegotiable. The letters reveal the passionate and, at times, combative spirit with which Robinson worked to remove the racial barriers in American society..

When Jackie Robinson took the field to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, he was more than a player: He was a pioneer. Jackie was the first African American to play major league baseball. He helped open the door to pro sports for other black athletes. February is Black History Month. This is Jackie Robinson's story. All-Around Athlete
Jackie is a baseball legend. But growing up in Pasadena, California, he was an all-around athlete. He played baseball in high school and in college at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). But he also played football, basketball, and ran track. How good was he? Jackie was the first athlete at UCLA to play on four varsity teams. He was the school's best baseball player. On the basketball court, he led the Pacific Coast Conference in scoring twice. In track and field, he won a national championship in the long jump. He was named an All-America running back in football. Jackie decided to leave school in his senior year to help earn money for his family. But when World War II broke out, he joined the army. By the end of the war, he had earned the rank of Lieutenant.

I was 14 years old when I first saw Jackie Robinson. It was the spring of 1948, the year after Jackie changed my life by breaking baseball's color line. His team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, made a stop in my hometown of Mobile, Ala., while barnstorming its way north to start the season, and while he was there, Jackie spoke to a big crowd of black folks over on Davis Avenue. I think he talked about segregation, but I didn't hear a word that came out of his mouth. Jackie Robinson was such a hero to me that I couldn't do anything but gawk at him. Muhammad Ali

He had to be bigger than the Brooklyn teammates who got up a petition to keep him off the ball club, bigger than the pitchers who threw at him or the base runners who dug their spikes into his shin, bigger than the bench jockeys who hollered for him to carry their bags and shine their shoes, bigger than the so-called fans who mocked him with mops on their heads and wrote him death threats.

ROBINSON, JACKIE
, professional baseball player with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-1956); first African-American to play in major league baseball in the twentieth century. Intensely proud of his talents and his blackness in a white-dominated world, Robinson created drama throughout his life. He fought racism viscerally—in his California childhood, at college, and in the army, where he faced a court-martial for defying illegal segregation on an army bus. When general manager Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers offered Robinson the chance to break organized baseball's powerful but unwritten color line, the fiery ballplayer not only accepted, he also agreed to Rickey's condition: that he not respond to the abuse he would face. Jackie Robinson's debut in organized baseball is a legend (April 18, 1946, with the Montreal Royals of the International League, the Dodgers' best farm club). In five at-bats he hit a three-run homer and three singles, stole two bases, and scored four times, twice by forcing the pitcher to balk. Promoted to the Dodgers the following spring, Robinson thrived on the pressure and established himself as the most exciting player in baseball. His playing style combined traditional elements of black sports—the opportunistic risk taking known as "tricky baseball" in the Negro Leagues—with an aggressiveness asserting his right to be at the plate or on the basepaths. According to his manager Leo Durocher, "This guy didn't just come to play. He come to beat ya."

Robinson, Jackie
, baseball player. Robinson became the first black player in major league baseball when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 after a year with the Montreal Royals, the top Dodger farm club. Robinson played all ten years of his major league career with the Dodgers, leading the team to six World Series appearances. Accepting Branch Rickey 's challenge not to respond to abuse, he withstood jeers, insults, bean balls, hate mail, and death threats to break the color line in professional sports. An exceptional hitter and base-stealer, he won the rookie of the year award in 1947 and the most valuable player award in 1949. Breaking his silence in 1949, Robinson became an outspoken opponent of racial discrimination. He received the Spingarn Medal in 1956 and retired from baseball in 1957 to engage in business, political, and civil rights activities. In 1962 he became the first black to enter baseball's Hall of Fame.

Jackie Robinson
's professional baseball career began in the Negro Leagues in 1945 with the Kansas City Monarchs. He showed good playing ability and attracted the attention of the scouts of Brooklyn Dodger General Manager Branch Rickey . Rickey was planning to integrate the major leagues and was looking for a talented athlete with the right personality to deal with the problems this integration would cause. In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in the modern major leagues, breaking the color barrier that had existed since the late 1800s. He played with the Dodgers through the 1956 season and finished his career with a lifetime average of .311. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

(b. January 31, 1919, Cairo, Ga.; d. October 24, 1972, Stamford, Conn.), American baseball player and civil rights activist, first African American to play major league baseball in modern times.
Born to sharecroppers Jerry and Mallie Robinson, Jackie Robinson was raised in Pasadena, California, primarily by his mother, who worked as a domestic after moving the family from Georgia. Taught by his mother to confront racism by showing his talent, Robinson turned to athletics as a way to compete with the white children who would shout racist epithets at him and his siblings. At John Muir High School, Robinson starred on several of the school's athletic teams. In 1938, he began attending Pasadena Junior College, where he continued to excel in sports. In 1940, Robinson transferred to the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became known as one of the best collegiate athletes in the United States. Robinson was the first man in the school's history to earn varsity letters in four sports. An All-America running back in football, he also competed in track and field - breaking his older brother's national record in the broad jump - and led the league in scoring while on the basketball team. Ironically, baseball was not Robinson's best sport, nor the one he most enjoyed.
