by Stan Griffin At the age of six, Curtis Pride played one T-ball game and then said, "I'm going to be a baseball player." Twelve years later, he signed a contract to play for the major league New York Mets. In the intervening years, he was: (1) an outstanding high school athlete excelling in baseball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swimming, track, and gymnastics; (2) named as one of the top 15 youth soccer players in the world (the only American) and a member of the U.S. National All-Star Soccer Team which traveled to China to compete for the 1985 Junior World Cup; (3) a "Parade Magazine" high school basketball All-American and a four-year starter as point guard on the College of William and Mary basketball team. On every one of those squads, Curtis was the only hearing-impaired athlete. Curtis' parents became aware of his deafness when he was 17 months old. He was diagnosed as "congenitally deaf with a profound (95%) sensorineural loss." (In other words, he lost all but 5% of his ability to hear.) During the time Sally Pride was pregnant with Curtis, she was struck by rubella (German measles). The year was 1968, there was a national outbreak of the disease, and it took away most of Curtis' hearing. John Pride moved his family in 1971 from Washington, D.C. to Silver Springs, Maryland. Curtis spent the first three years of his schooling in special education oral classes. Beginning with grade 4, he was "mainstreamed" (put into classes with hearing students). He followed his mother's advice when being teased and pushed around by other students: "You can never, ever let them (his tormentors) stop you from doing what you want to do." Curtis finally knocked down one of them to earn their respect.

WILL HE BE THE NEXT DEAF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER?
by Stan Griffin, Deaf Friends International Special Contributor
There have only been a few deaf athletes who have been able to reach baseball’s major leagues. The first (and so far the only) pitcher of that select group was Luther Haden "Dummy" Taylor who played for the New York Giants from 1900-1908. On the horizon now is a young man who may possibly be the second. His name is Ryan Ketchner, and he is the property of the Seattle Mariners. Last year (2003), he pitched for the Class A California League Inland Empire 66ers based in San Bernadino. It was a successful year for the team–and for Ketchner. The 66ers were California League champions, and he was chosen the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. During the season, he won 14 games, tying a club record. The team’s pitching staff led the league in Earned Run Average (ERA). Class A is three steps away from the majors. The Mariners believe Ryan’s "ETA in Seattle (estimated time of arrival) is 2005" and that he is " ... one of (their) most promising pitching prospects." He was a tenth-round draft pick by the Mariners in the 2000 amateur draft. He played on four minor league teams before arriving in San Bernadino. The previous season he played for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and was named their "Pitcher of the Year." Ketchner is 21 years old, stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, and is a southpaw (throws left-handed). He wears two hearing aids, but they only help him "detect vibrations, not distinguish words." He is a very talented lipreader. Teammates are able to communicate with Ketchner, but they have to remember to "look at him when you talk." He is described as a "real chatterbox." Others say " ... he fits right in ..." playing cards and video games and "joining in jokes like everyone else."

Curtis Pride Deaf Baseball player Curtis is currently the only professional (Major League) baseball player who is Deaf. He's not the first Deaf pro player, that'd be William "Dummy" Hoy, who, if you didn't already know this, is the reason for hand signals in baseball. Since Dummy Hoy couldn't hear the umpire, they started using hand signals which in turn helped out the other players out of earshot, and the fans in the stands...little history for yano charge. Right now there's a big push to get Mr. Hoy into the Baseball Hall of Famehope he makes it. Wait a minute this is supposed to be about Curtis. Curtis is an incredibly genuine young man who can run faster than a Ferrari. I met him when he came to NTID to make a motivational presentation to our studentshe was cool. Pride, 32, joins the Triple-A roster at spring training in Jupiter, Fla. and will likely start the season with the Ottawa Lynx
"It's great to have Curtis back in our organization and with our team," said Kevin Whalen, Lynx director of baseball operations. "Curtis is a popular player wherever he goes, no matter what uniform he's wearing."
Pride, who is deaf, won the Tony Conigliaro Award in 1996 as the major-league player who has "overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage."

In a trade that surprised many, the Nashua Pride sent long-time team members D.J. Boston and Chop Pough to the Ducks today in exchange for Denny Harriger and Jamie Pogue.
Boston, who has been with the team for at least parts of each season since the team's inception in 1998, will be missed in the cramped Pride clubhouse. His leadership abilities were widely regarded to be among the best in the league and earned him respect from many of his peers.

Pride conquers hearing defect
by Bill Nichols The road to the major leagues has had its share of chuckholes for Harrisburg outfielder Curtis Pride, but a hearing impairment has never been one of them. Pride has been unable to hear without a hearing aid since birth. "I don't consider it a handicap," Pride said yesterday before the game between the Canton-Akron Indians and the Senators at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadim. The Senators' Cliff Floyd hit a two-run homer and left-hander Gabe White (5-1) scattered five hits as Harrisburg defeated the Indians, 2-0. Pride, who is in his eighth year in the minor leagues, was with the New York Mets for seven seasons after being drafted out of high school in 1986. He joined the Montreal Expos this season as a six-year free agent. And he is having his finest season as a professional. Pride, 24, is batting .341. He has hit 13 home runs, has driven in 32 runs and has 21 stolen bases. Never before, in either Class A or AA, has he hit .300 or higher. "Everything is coming together this year," said Pride. "Jim Tracy (Harrisburg manager) has worked with me. I'm much more consistent in getting contact. I keep my front shoulder square and take a shorter swing. "I'm having fun and as long as I have fun every day and I don't worry about what others are saying."
